Heart rate too low on the bike?

Hey gang, now that I've got a few weeks of HR trainer work under my belt, I'm wondering if my heart rate is too low (i.e. am I wussing out).  I had read a few threads where some EN folks mentioned bike HRs of 180s and 190s during main sets on the trainer!  Put it this way, If I am busting my butt I'm lucky if I break 160.  Most of the time I can't get above the 140s.  Can't say it's the same with my running (on hard intervals I'm easily in the 180s).

So either my fitness is AWESOME!  Or I'm pathetic on the bike (more likely). Any thoughts or suggestions?  Should I re-test (I get a power meter next month so I was waiting to re-test with that).

Thanks!

  • Mac, if you are riding to what you tested at then you are good. Note that HR is so individual you can't compare. Once you have power, however, it's a whole 'nother ball game!!!
  • If it helps at all, my zone 4 on the bike is about 161 - 168 (going from memory but that's pretty close).
