January OS Pain Cave

Ok.... I'm getting ready.  Here is my pain cave.

My road bike (trek on computrainer on left), my tri bike (specalized on trainer on center) and my wife's bike (trainer on right).

On the left is the TV and I put the computer.  Behind bike is treadmill (I don't use unless it is terrible) and the weight set.  The weight set ends up being the an expensive clothes holder.

Ok--so what is your set up?

  •  ooooh, I like those gigsaw gym matt thingies under your bike!  OK, I have pics of my paincave in the old forum but I'll take a few more (have updated since then anyway) and will post shortly.

  • No wonder you and Aaron Smith are friends.  3 bikes.  Cool.  Where are the bike trophy wall hangers?  :-)

And where is my damn shirt!  :-)

  • I wish I had the space in my condo to leave a permanent pain cave. Mine is set up in the morning, as I drink my coffee, and taken down after the workout and stuffed in a closet.
  • anyone have any experience in garage type pain cave set-ups ? I'm considering taking over a bay in my garage - (good-bye assorted junk !) I'm in Florida so generally not a cold issue - just dealing w/ lack of light - any ideas ?
  • @John:   They are in the garage.  Yeah--I'm the world's biggest slacker on the shirt.  I need to stop by this vacation.

  •  Alright, finally have a quick second to post my pain cave pics.  To give you some context, I live on the outer banks of North Carolina.  All the houses here are built on pilings (up off the ground) due to flood/hurricane insurance requirements.  Anyway, there's usually a small storage room under the house and last year we converted that little room into my home office/pain cave.

The key to get into my pain cave:

Here is the view looking into the pain cave (note the sign )

The view from inside the pain cave:

And best of all, the view out the windows of my pain cave!

  • This is my pain cave.  There are many like it, but this one is MINE!  My view isn't as cool as Nemo's...  I don't have a treadmill... My fan stinks/barely functions, but it will do the job!

Here are my bikes.  I think I will alternate depending on how I'm feeling.  Race posters are in the background to remind me of what I'm working for, PT wheel and old tire for the trainer.  You'll notice I need lots of towels to try and keep the sweat off my bike:

This is the view from the front of my bike.  For longer rides I like to throw a video in the computer or I have my music all ready to load up when I like.  Above them you can see my wall of shame...  Medals, AG awards, finisher pix, et al.:

Now you can see the view I have out of my pain cave and my craptastic fan that I have:

My favorite Christmas present rounds it all out.  Good for pull ups, core work, pushups... The IronGym!

Not pictured is the garbage can...  OS here I come!

  • "Up on the roof" - actually one of our decks, which is partially open and partially covered (handy when it rains), and set the the woods of the Great Northwest. (I'm clipping the CT pulse pickup to my ear - too many wires!)

A family of porcupines lives in the crook of the tree just over my right shoulder.

But I'd rather watch Bono and Edge in "Rattle and Hum" today. I'm wearing earphones in deference to all the family members still sleeping in this Christmas eve morn - adult children trying to cram themselves and their SOs back into childhood beds!

It's 35 F outside; usually it's a bit warmer, as I more often train after noon, and don't wear a top. The deck is a paint on - rubberized material - easy to clean in the summer when the sweat pools.

  •  Finally took a few pics of my pain cave. It is in the finished part of the basement.

The room as a whole. We have a total gym that Max uses more than me. You can see various devices along the floor for pushup and abs work. Where I am standing (taking pic) there is a mini-trampoline, step, balance thing, and a box of assorted bike gear. Near bike is Max's. Can barely see we have a fireplace in the room as that is where we store all of the various shoes. Also have a Nordic Trac ski machine in far right corner. The fan is sitting on the corner of the fireplace. I have it blowing from the side so it doesn't dry my eyes out.

My bike setup. Notice I have lots of towels. Nothing to protect the rug. It's a rental. However, we know that it will be torn down when we move out. But more towels helps protect everything. I have a tv, usuallly muted during intervals. There is also an i-pod stand, cranked loud for intervals. Notice I am in possession of IMMoo poster (for a while anyway). My white board is on the table.

    Yeah- I'm in the corner...

But this is my view when the sun is up. I like it. Behind the couch is my road bike converted for tri.

No pics of me sweating away. I am always alone in the early morning.

EDIT- did pics a 3rd time. Still red boxes?

  •  Nice Al!  Yeah- sometimes I'll take the trainer outside under the deck instead as well- much easier to stay cool while drilling those intervals without having to blow the fan!!

Tom- I love your wall of shame.  I have the whole room plastered in pics & medals- I call it my "Love me" wall! (well, that's the PG version anyway)

Michele- I can't see your pics.  They just show up as red boxes???

  • @Bryan re garage set up. I had an electrician out to install extra lights and add a few outlets. Makes a big difference. Also, as I warm up, I'll open the garage door with the opener I keep at my fingertips which cools the place and adds light.
  •  @ Nemo- Thanks. I reposted. Any difference? Weird. It is Snapfish.

@all- are you seeing red boxes as well?

  • OS gang

Here is my pain cave.  Pretty basic.  Big screen TV to watch ESPN SportsCenter while in pain.  Note xbox on top of the TV.  This is where the teen boys play Xbox, too but they are never awake when I am pain caving.  Note potato chip bag and plate.  Authentic!  The bike is a cro-moly frame 1986 Trek.  Belongs in a museum really, but takes my abuse.  Cheap Target bookcase for sole purpose of supporting laptop I bring down and attach to the CT.  Little stand holds two water bottles.  Fan is awesome!  Old treadmill works, sort of, but is best used as a towel rack.  I run outside and if necessary on the treamills at my YMCA.  I can run there in less than 8 minutes.  I often do it barefoot.  I'm getting a reputation in the neighborhood!

This is a walkout basement.  When the weather turns, I can open the door and let the fresh air in.

I did Body for Life back in 2000-02.  Anyone else do that?  Don't let RnP know that there are free weights in my pain cave.  But don't worry, I am sticking to the plan.  Shriveling up, , but sticking to the plan.

One more week for most of Jan OS to eat and rest.  Then, to the cave!!

  • Here's mine - I feel very lucky to have one above ground!

Michele - I can't see your pics either, just the red boxes. My picture is from Snapfish too - wierd.

  •  My 3 pics. Are they still red boxes? Trying to figure out problem. Have not had a problem before.

Tried a change on last 2 pics, might help me figure this out.

  • Still red boxes, Michele.

They are from Costco!  They keep the stink off the rug. They work ok.  I do feel like I'm reconnecting them constantly.

Screw it- take my word for it. There is a pain cave behind those boxes. I have no idea what the problem is.

OK- so Michele's pain cave is the red box of hell!  Sounds about right to me anyway!

Does that mean you rent out in front of McDonald's?  There might be something to that business model...  I think the name may even stick.

  • I am currently moving our pain cave to a different room. Hope to post pics by the weekend!!
  • I will try to upload a pic of my pain cave. I do need a fan though. The window even open doesn't cut it.
  • Ok, I'm sure this is somewhere on the forum but I can't find it. How do you insert pics ?

Alternative method if you don't want to/can't upload your pics to an online service like flickr; this method allows you to upload a picture to your post WITHOUT LEAVING the reply box; and you can select a pic previously uploaded to the forum in another post with just a couple of clicks.

    1. Down below the reply box (not the Quick Reply one), there are two pop down boxes: Attachments and Topic Review.

    2. Select "Attachments"

    3. Click on "Browse..." button.

    4. Select a picture from your hard drive or other source connected to your computer.

    5. Select "Upload" (to the right ot Browse button)

    6. More choices appear; select "Insert".

Advantage: these are stored on same server as this forum (contrary to what Rich implies in thread quoted above), and you can then select "My Files" to add the same pic to another post.

  • loved all the pics of the pain caves! and I loved the red boxes!! theme....
  • I would say a fan is necessary. I don't heat the basement warmer than 60 degrees and I need that fan. Sometimes I forget to turn it on. Those are the days that the towels are supersaturated if I am too lazy to get up and turn it on.

    Goals and Workouts

If you look close you can see water at the bottom

  • Paul: You need more beer. I like the VDOT/Power sheet. I'm going to steal that.
