Day 3
Sunday: December 27, Day 3....... 28 degrees here with 55% humidity and windy...
Ran 4 miles in sub 32 and come to find out I have been doing spreadsheet wrong with tallying of points so will go and correct...!! but 5 points for me. Legs feel good and piriformis no worse so continuing on!! I get lots of walk breaks with dog so that is probably why I am able to get back up to 4 miles!! wore new Garmin and uploaded! that would be the biggest accomplishment. I liked the feature when it vibrates on my wrist so I know I just ran a mile! I don't like the feel of the wriststrap as my old one was nice and worn and was velcro!!Garmin 301 and I don't like the wider squarer shape as it doesn't fit as nicely on my little wrist and tended to flop over and then I couldnt see it! will work on that... New Gore $80 bike gloves (Thanks SANTA!) work like a charm in this cold weather!! no more painful fingers....so running in the cold ain't so bad except for the time it takes to get dressed and more laundry!!! ha. nobody out (I wonder why?) so we had the trail around our local lake to ourselves and Rudy went crazy with every squirrel that crossed our path and the puddles were icy so more stops for me as I just knew he would make me slide over one of them!! the dog is just 6 months old so we did experience a few perfect dog and owner run moments (when there were no more squirrels!!!) . then there were moments when his hind legs got caught up in my legs!! more birds I think!! and he got one of his paws stepped on! anybody else running with their dogs? I mean like "heeling" where my leg/thigh is right up against him guiding him and his head doesn't get past my feet! gotta scoot for church, I hope everybody has some good runs today!! m
Comments
Marianne- I can't believe it is warmer in the Boston area than in Arkansas!
I ran 7.3 in a "warm" rain of 47 degrees. The arctic blast is coming back, but I got out to really enjoy the "heatwave".
Also did my pushup test between weeks 2 & 3 to see where I fall (it's on the web protocol). Gonna back off a bit though. Still doing my corework too. Trying tofigure out a good way to keep it going once I start Jan OS.
5 points for me today--4 miles with one at TP. 51 degrees here! My tank is pointing to E these days.
m--I've been running with Cali, and @ 8 months old she is doing better and better. I work a lot on heeling and loose-leash walking in training, and it's starting to translate over to the running. As soon as we pick up the pace into a run, she goes into "travel mode" like she's migrating with her pack--ears back, tail out, seemingly so purposeful, focused, and "proud." I can tell she loves it. When I run with her, I do use the prong collar--it's like power steering. Until she is 100% reliable, I need that training tool to make sure I can move her quickly if I need to. I still only do easy runs with her--I would be too distracted that she might take me out with any kind of quick paced running.
I also like this Buddy System leash. I can grab her if I need to, but mostly run with my hands free. I did get the "lunge buster" attachment.
Anything to help should she decide to pull to the side.
I adore running with her, but like I said before, at this young age we will do best sticking to the EZ paces.
Only 2.5 points for me today, but better than nothing. My goal is just getting out the door!! This is also Indie's 4th day of running with me. Boy, how quickly she has learned. I go get my shoes and she turns into a swirling black blur of excitement. I make her sit/stay before I will put her leash on and she can barely contain herself. She has done sooo well @ ;staying to my left. I have to give her an occasional "heel", but all in all it is like she has done this for years.
The irony of this, is that I was told 2 years ago that she needed surgery for a torn ccl (canine cruciate ligament). It is a HUGE orthopedic procedure, $$$$$, with 10 weeks of post-op confinement. I opted NOT to put her through that and her she is, running like a champ. I think she is using the run as her warmup for "chuck-it" intervals!
Linda- What is your "buddy" leash ???
Ran a long one with a group of 11, split into 6 in our group and 5 not far behind.
16.3 miles, over 2 hours , 2x 5 min at TP so will call that 1 extra point= 19.3
Steve ran with us and froze the whole run as it was slow for him. He wasn't sweating for the first half, hands in pockets. He ran ahead to warm up and circled back so he got 17 miles in for 19 points.
Off to roll, compress and stretch!

Day 3 and feeling good!
Last year they put up a bike path suspension bridge over a local freeway, but I never knew how to get there on city streets, so that was my goal for the day. Here's a picture (courtesy of Google maps, I didn't carry a camera):
I was hoping for 15 miles today, and as I crossed over I glanced at my Forerunner, and I was at 7.3 - perfect!
I ended up with 15.7 miles over 2 hours. It was pretty warm - probably high 40s, so no point there, and I was pretty DISTANTLY far from TP the entire run
. 17.7 points.
Mike
okay on the dog advice! he heels to the right cuz oncoming cyclists would be on my left if on the trail.... and yes I do the loose leash walking too and yes make him sit while I put on collar and take it off! and try to get to him to sit when we stop! he is getting better!
good on everybody's runs!
G--Here's the link. http://www.buddysys.com/. Told Jamie about it too!
You better hurry, he's afraid you're going to get one first.
I know it's a hijack, but it might be useful to anyone else running with their doggie.
Wow, colder in Tampa than Atlantic Beach today. I ran 14.1 miles this morning in 50 - 53 degree temps; only the 2nd time this year that I've worn tights (no photos of that!). Lots of awesome runs by everyone today. r/Paul
In all fairness, I ran at the warmest part of the day. But wow, tights in 50-53! I was psyched to be able to wear only shorts for that past two days. Guess it's what you're used to. And FWIW, I'm not used to this, just getting acclimated to running in the cold this year.
Solid one hour run here in Houston where it was sunny and 60. Sorry, team tundra. Turned 7.2mi at largely Zn3 ABP with 3 miles at TP. Total 11.2 points. Still a week from Jan OS start, so I've been pushing my running. Feelin' great with no injury issues. Probably need to be a little careful over the next few days in preparation for a big finish on Friday.
7 points for me today. Was up and out early before the family got up for breakfast. 4 miles with 2 x 1 at TP. Cold and rainy up in Maine so will gladly take that +1. Got home to NH and it was 45!? weird. Great couple of days up on the beach so definitely a nice change of view!
Another 16 pts today.8.5 mi with 6.5 at TP. It was a lot harder today since I did the Sat Nov OS bike workout earlier in the day(hard to finish).
I doubt if I can keep up with Mike H. much longer. I'm just hoping to beat my last year's point total- Still got 57 pts to go..
Great runs everybody!
John
A little tougher run today with doing my 1:15:00 2 X 15's bike workout this morning, plus the wind was blowing in the wrong direction today.
Did 12 miles in 1:29:00 2 @ TP. Feeling a little tired after 3 long runs in a row. But enjoying the challenge of logging some good miles.
Wow! Some monster numbers today including some impressive early postings by the ladies.
Who would've thought I'd be out running in shorts and a long sleeve shirt on Dec 27 in Connecticut. Gladly give up the extra point for being able to run in 50 degree temps in December. Like Linda my tank is is pretty much on empty. Put in what should've been an easy 5 miles but having run 5 days straight now (including the bike workouts) and I'm pretty spent. Today was the longest distance I've ran at one clip since Lake Placid. Finished the five and picked up the the dog for what I thought would be a nice easy cool down walk around the block. He had other thoughts and must've figured I was still dress to run so he hammered out 1.1 miles running full speed. I never imagined our little Shih Tzu could run that fast for that distance (this on top of a long walk he had with the kids this morning). Never turned my Garmin on (as it was supposed to be a walk) but the little fella had me moving at a RPE much harder than the previous 5 miles I had put in. Chalk up an extra point to his wanting to run. 6 points for me today (for 6 miles). While its not in the ball park of the monster numbers you guys have been putting in I couldn't be more psyched as it's been a long time since I've been able to run this far without pain in my shin.
Just realized I've run more miles in the last 5 days then I ran the entire month of November.
On the fence about tomorrow. The competitive side of my brain is saying it's run challenge week so run. The smart side of my brain is saying keep big picture in mind, your legs are cooked, rest, don't get injured. Will be game time decision when I wake up.
Made it out about 6:30 a.m. this morning and yes, it was actually 31 degrees in the Austin area...1 pt. Ran 9 miles with 4 at TP, Easy mile on and TP mile and so forth until I hit 9 miles in 1:10:00. A 15 point day for me.
Legs are hammered after yesterdays tough bike in new zones and three days in a row of running all with TP intervals. Great numbers today team!
John,
That's a monster run with all that TP work - especially with the bike workout beforehand!!!
Remember - I'm putting up my numbers in a vacuum - skipping all the other workouts in exchange for miles.
You're going great - 57 in 5 days will be a breeze for you!
Mike
Thanks Mike!
I didn't realize you were easing off the bike this 8 days. It sure would make it a little less hard.
I'm doing what I did for the challenge last year: 1/2mi at TP with jog recovery for ~30 secs and just keep repeating until I can't hold TP pace. So 6.5 TP miles is 1/2 mi x 13 repeats.
I've got the IPOD set on some heavy metal tunes that help me keep motivated. I find that as I get more tired and less focussed it helps to focus on running form- solid core, lean forward, lift quads and keep cadence above 90 helps crank out the last few 1/2 mile intervals.
Good luck on your long miles. I'll be cheering you on as I hammer the TP intervals.
John
Good job everyone!
Great news from Aaron and Kitboo coming of the IR and being able to run again. Nice work!
I remember last year when Dr D. put up some killer numbers. He's outdoing himself again this year.
Chris, IIRC, you telemark ski, right? That should count toward some points.
I put in 4 miles in the dark at LRP after watching two football games and eating various and sundry chips and dips. I may have burned off 10% of the calories I took in.

Christmas morning my sister-in-law's neighborhood in Virginia had still not been plowed and the ice layer on the snow was not friendly. She's a dog-walker and had to drive to another neighborhood which was well plowed to take care of a client. So while everyone slept, I joined her for a glorious Christmas morning run with snow all around, Christmas lights, the smell of cinnamon and fireplaces, and Christmas Carols on the ipod. I only got in 4 miles, but it was sub 32 so I got an extra point there :-)
Saturday we were in West Virginia and surprisingly their roads were much better. Unfortunately however it was raining and just above freezing. I still managed to get in 5 hilly miles though!
Sunday we were in Maryland and you'd think the roads would be OK. However the temps dropped to sub 30 overnight and all the rain that had melted much of the snow the day before turned the roads and side walks into ice skating rinks!! Very dangerous for running. So my BFF and I power-walked fora little over 8 miles and 2 hours. I'm still counting that as a run- hope that's not cheating!
We are back in North Carolina today and I plan to run at lunch. Should be interesting with the wind!
