Race Rehersal #2- Be there or Be Square

The 2nd Race Rehersal is coming up in a couple weeks. Scott Stewart found a copy of the bike course on map my ride.com. Tentatively we are going with this plan, but will keep monitoring the race website to verify the actual course. Either way, we are going to ride the course on Saturday July 30th, for those in the south end, we can car pool up there. Lets plan to start riding at 8:00 am from the North Cove Park (swim location). Afterwards we can meet up at the post race hang out spot (Freds Rivertown Ale House in Snohomish) for lunch.  Please RSVP on this thread if you are interested.

  • I will be there. I look forward to checking out the new course.
  • Count me in for now but I will confirm about a week prior.
  • I'm doing the Federal Escape Oly that day, so I'll have to do it on Sunday and keep it local. I'll be looking forward to hearing how the new course will treat us on race day.
  • I was looking on the Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce website and discovered that this is the same weekend as Aquafest, which is a relatively large event for a small town like Lake Stevens. I accidentally planned a training day up there last year during Aquafest and traffic around downtown was crazy. I was caught in traffic for half an hour before finally making my way past downtown and getting away from the chaos.

So I propose that we completely avoid downtown Lake Stevens. We could meet at the Machias Trail Head of the Centennial Trail (approximately at mile 52.5 of the bike course). Here's a map of the Centennial Trail that shows the trail head locations:

    http://www.commtrans.org/FAQs/Images/bikemaps/Centennial2010.pdf

Then we could ride the course with the exception of the first and last 1/2 mile that goes into downtown. So basically we would turn right from 131st Ave NE onto 16th St NE, which is approximately mile 0.5 and 55.5 of the course. That would give us a nice 55 mile loop and we could then do our brick run along the Centennial Trail.

    So how does that sound?
  • That sounds like a plan. My sister will more than likely join us for that ride as well.

  • The map is up now on the Ironman Lake Stevens website. It's the same one as scott found so we are golden for RR #2. See you there!

  • See those of you going on the course, tomorrow at 7:45 am at the Machias Trailhead on the Centenial Trail (about mile 52.5 of the bike course). I hope to be riding by 8:00.  If you're interested I am going to the Post Race Meetup for lunch in Snohomish (Freds Rivertown)

  •  What's the scoop, Steve? The course looks less hilly than before.

  • Not LESS hilly...think MORE hilly.

I would love you to be there!  The only problem would be that you have to decide if you are going to take the Las Vegas Slot that you will get when you win your AG!

  • Hey Guys,

I did the bike leg as a relay last year and will be again this year. We drove the new course a couple of weeks ago so I can offer you an apples-to-apples comparison out of Garmin Connect.

Executive summary: Most certainly hillier. Looks to be about 3,600 feet of climbing in 2011 vs. 2,600 in 2010.   Let’s execute like Ninjas!

  • Yes, definately more hilly. Whats worse is where the hills are at.  During the ride my joule was reporting a total of 4200' gained but when downloaded to WKO+ it showed 3600' gained.  Since Jenn is showing 3600' we will go with that.

  • I did the RR with Steve and Scott today. My main goal for the day was to see if my knees would hold up for a half Ironman distance since I had to walk the IMCDA due to stabbing knees coming off the 112 mile bike. Overall, my knees felt great today all the way up to the 2 mile hill on 171st. Toward the top the knees started to hurt but then they seemed to recover during the last 6 miles and I was able to run a few miles without any stabbing. So I was optimistic about doing the race in 2 weeks. Then I sat in the car for an hour and 45 minutes driving home and by the time I arrived my knees were stabbing. I can barely make it up/down stairs. So at this point I don't think my knees will be ready for the race in 2 weeks.

Steve - I'll let you know in a few days but for now it's probably safe to assume I won't be registering. If I don't race, I will probably just come to the race and after race dinner and not the Saturday dinner.
