Week of 7/25: Rally Weekend/RR

Hope everyone had a great training weekend.  The weather was brutal in DC and I ended up all messed up... I did Fri's workout Sat and Sat's workout Sun ... and I did it on the drainer (well, 3h5m, all the work intervals and a 30m Z2 remainder ride) followed by an excruciating 30m run -- the air was so thick it was hard to breathe.

I'd hope the weather would be better yesterday so I could get up and do the Sun 3 hour ABP ride outside, but no such luck... 2 more hours on the drainer in Z3. 

It was all about mental toughness and self preservation this weekend.  Happy to say I hit all my targets, though.  That's a first since I tested into these new numbers just before my June HIM (numbers didn't change after last test).  Today is warm but the humidity is finally breaking.  I'm hoping to do a swim, run brick after work and be on schedule for the week, well, sort of.  Because of the epic weekend I'm planning to nix Wed's ride and will do Ts swim... and all will be right with the training gods.

Can't believe it's rally weekend and the first RR.  Should be awesome.  I'm sure I'll be horrified with how slow I am on the course riding my goal watts, but it will be good for me to get a better sense of how long the race will take me. 

Oh, and news flash:  I swam 2 2/3 times last week... sooooo close.  I would have hit all the workouts but thunder struck and I had to cut one swim short.  That said, I skipped the speed drills for each workout bc my rib hurt... close enough!

  • Yes - it was a tough weekend! Due to work travel and recovery from Racine HIM last Sunday, had to hold off on the long run until Saturday (didn't get started until 10:30 am) and did the Saturday bike/brick on Sunday. Intervals on the trainer (too hard to get long stretches of road to make them happen) and 1.5 hours outside. Followed up with a brick - hard to keep that mental focus with sweat stinging your eyes - but lots of practice with the Box!

    Getting the workouts done this week. Long run moving to Sunday and RR swim on Thursday. Becky - I'll be riding right with you.

    If anyone is interested, I have some passes for the Y - I'll be doing my swim Thursday afternoon (I'm in Madison). I'd be happy to meet people at the Clarion at 2:00 - it's about a 15 minute drive. Lap goes until 4:00 and then the swim team takes over. Let me know.

    I skipped the brick today figuring I'd make up the riding time and then some this weekend.

    Troubling is that on the 60 min run last night my R foot started bothering me... a lot. It seems like now that the L foot is finally okay I'm getting PF in the right. I rolled it out last night, and have done stretches and iced today. Not sure if the long run is gonna happen tomorrow. ARGH. I have a massage scheduled on Mon when I get back. If I have to, I'll see if my ART guy can get me in Mon instead of Th...he fixed my L foot, hopefully he can do the R (and I'm catching it much earlier this time).
  • Since I raced HIM on Sunday, I've not done the usual bike/run stuff to this point. Did three hard swims M/T/W. I put a new cassette on my bike (11-26), and I'd like to get out and try it briefly tonight. Then heading out to the rally starting tomorrow. With luck, I'll be good to go for the weekend (well, Friday). After all, that's the guidance with a HIM, right... get to the next weekend good to go. I think my swimming has been good enough quality to be real work, but as usual, real work wasn't going to happen for a couple of days on the legs.
