Day 8

Happy New Years!!  this is the last day of the challenge, right?? anyways, i slept for ten hours last night, no partying just a dinner with friends and was whooped anyways.. and Task A, was sleep in!!  I just did 2 miles this morning cuz I needed to get back, but cold out there again!  but sunny!  with Rudy, the dog!  saw a deer in the woods and I was reminded again how his coloring was camouflaged with the exact color of the bark on the trees!  on my way home, looked some New Years Resolotion runners as I saw cotton tees over sweats and the like!  so proud that they were out there!!

Running Every Day:

1.  once you get in the routine, you just don't think about it!

2.  Lay your stuff out the night before so you don't think about it!

3.  Helps if you have a dog!

4.  Enjoyed it and congrats to everybody who participated!    m

  • Finally got a tundra point!  We're in Dallas with my parents and it was 30 degrees when I did my run.  I attempted to do my VDOT test a little early on the track at the local junior high, but the surface was deep and soggy and it felt like running in quicksand.  I quickly cancelled the testing idea and just did intervals.    5 miles with 3 total at threshold and 1 tundra point gets me to 9.  Happy New Year everyone, and congratulations to everyone who participated in this challenge!

    Great observation!!

I slept in, and it's threatening to rain here, so I'm holding off for a (hopefully) sunny afternoon to wrap up the challenge runs.

    Good going folks!  Last day

    Mike

  • Happy New Year's Everyone! Last look at the Google doc seems to show Mike is ahead by just 0.6 on the Mike Vs Coach P challenge! Way to go MIKE!!!!

At 10:30 last night I looked outside to find it raining and decided with the head cold I would be better off not joining the midnight 5K last night. So no points there. I woke up this morning with a sinus headache and finished up the challenge this morning with a nice 5 mile run to get the mucus flowing!. I ended up running 5 out of 7 days which is actually a huge uptick for me considering I hadn't run a single step in over 2 months prior to my return from New Zealand. So thanks to this challenge I have a little kick start going into the Jan OS!

    Congrats to everyone who participated!
  • My feet are hurting - I've aggravated a couple of foot conditions off and I took 12/31 off - I wanted to do every day and finish off with the local New Year's 5K today, but I'd rather not risk making things worse. It looks as if I'm out for the last two days of the challenge which is a shame considering some of the temperatures and weather scenarios I endured to to get this far.

Oh well. It was great running with everyone the past week and reading about everyone's experiences. Looking forward to the 2010 challenge.
  • Did Sunday's run today to finish out the week (because I knew there was no way I could run today AND Sunday). 7 miles, 3 @ z4, 1 hour bonus point = 11 points.

Nine straight days of running (counting the run I did on 12/24). 34 miles total (29 counting toward the official Challenge). 7 TP points. 2 cold points. 2 one-hour points. 5 bonus points for running every single day.

I have NEVER done anything like this before and - I can't believe I'm typing this - it was a piece of cake. Yeah, I'm more tired than I should be but I'm far from completely trashed. Though now it is time to make friends with the couch and settle in for a Kona marathon.

Great job everyone! Thanks Mike for making this challenge extra fun!
  • Fun 5 mile group jog this morning from my house, then brunch with friends before a lazy football afternoon. I had a good, consistent week. Nothing crazy – something like 42 miles (didn’t bother with decimal places in on the spreadsheet). My goal was just to run 8 consecutive days without interrupting the OS plan. Last year I went 48 miles and developed a chronically sore heel. Didn’t want that this year.

Will step on the scale of truth in the morning. Five Christmas parties, two birthdays, our wedding anniversary (18. I’m getting old), and New Years’ Eve. Oy!

Nittany Lions just went up 7 – 0. High fives & fist bumps around the Kerr residence…

    Happy New Year!

  •  You think you're getting old?? I came home from work yesterday and passed out on the couch at about 7. Woke up at 9:30 and thought "nice nap, now I should make it til midnight". But it was not to be. I was out again some time after 11. Oh well. I obviously needed to sleep.

Slept in until almost 9, very late for me. It's a beautiful day. Did my push ups then set out for a nice run. I brought the Yak Traks and should have worn them a few different times, but just slowed down instead. Mostly I ran in the road as there was minimal traffic. It was just amazing. Somehow I never seem to be able to remember how long my routes actually are. I thought I would be doing 8, but it was the same circuit and was 9.25. I should write them down. Just 2 @ TP. Did some fretting about families out on the ice at a lake, but they looked to be having a great time and were very close to shore. Some fishing, some skating. Really a special time.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! WISHING ALL PEACE, LOVE, AND HAPPINESS!

  • Great challenge everyone. I know that this forum helped me to stay focused and the Challenge served as a nice prologue for the Jan OS. Kudos to those of you combining the Challenge with your Nov and Dec OS work. It was sunny and cool this morning, and I settled into an Ironman run pace to see how my legs were holding up. 10 miles and 90 min with no TP seemed like the right way to finish things up. Happy New Year.

  • Well woke up to find it got durned COLD overnight!  Race start was 19 degrees with windchill of 5 ----brrrrrrrrr!   Ran 10 for the Hangover Classic.  Couldn't believe the response- over 350 pre-registered and TONS of folks signing up on race day.  Had a great run with friends- nice to have a social run without a  "workout" in mind.  Had frozen hair when I finished (sorry forgot the camera- it was a funny pic).  Trying to get warmed up now!

Congrats to Mike!  My legs hurt just thinking about jumping in the pool, nevertheless, all the tons of miles you ran!  Thanks for adding to the fun!  Love someone who can keep P on his toes!

    GOOOOOO EN CHICKAS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  •  Hi all.... FIRST, Sorry that I haven't been posting daily. I have been on vacation here in Lindsborg Kansas. I have no cell phone coverage, and the internet is spotty. SECOND, It has been inspiring reading up on every ones accomplishments. I have been a RUNNING FOOL since the 25th and have never racked this amount of miles (80)in this amount of time. Bottom line, I feel great. I didn't have access to my bike but I did have access to a wellness center here in town. This picture sums up what the place was like.

    image

All old people, no one used an ipod because all they did was talk and WALK. They were all very cute old folks, but from being out of town, I couldn't contribute much to the conversation, besides, I was there to work. A comment was made that there was a burning smell after I ran every day because the treadmills were only used for walking on.

On the cold days I ran inside and stared at that cat hanging on the wall and the OLD school heart rate chart.

This morning, I ran with the winner of the Dallas marathon from the early 90's, JP Worcester. It was a great way to start up the year and run WITH people.

SUMMARY: The family let me sleep in and run every morning. As long as I was home by noon everything was OK. I feel great, and most of all, I didn't, put on any LBS!!!!!

  • I did a short brick this morning....23.55 easy miles on the bike (New Year's ride with "Tri-Floyd") followed by a 4.25 mile run. About 64-65 degrees with on and off light rain. Temperatures have been falling this afternoon and we aren't supposed to hit 60 for a high again until next Friday. My winter running gear will get a work-out over the next week. Today ends the Holiday Challenge but begins the Iron Distance Challenge in one of the local clubs. The goal is to see how many IM multiples you can do in the month of January. And so it begins...less than 6 months to IMCDA now!
  • Very short run today, my daughter wanted to come along so we did one mile, 42 degrees so no tundra points.

We did find the holiday challenge run finish line, who knew it was out there???

Had a great time with this, almost made all 8 days but I feel like I am starting the New Year in a great place.

  • Day 8 in the bag.  Did the Hangover Handicap 5 Miler this morning with 3 at tp for 8pts.  Followed it up with Polar Bear Plunge at noon wth the boys while Mom and daughter took pics!  Will get some up.

  • Josh (Noodle)- That is too funny- a burning smell after running! Welcome back! Sounds like you had an awesome vacation/visit. Are  you in Jan OS?

Congratulations to all of the EN Chickas on the run challenge and to the EN family as a whole! What a way to start the next decade!

  • OMG Noodle- that's hysterical!! The hanging cat is simply a classic!

Bryan- you and the rest of the crazy New England Polar Bear Plungers should get extra bonus points for that crazy stunt! If not here, then in the Tundra Challenge for sure!!!
  • Nice work everyone, and happy new year! Did the New Year's Day Dash 5-miler at tempo pace in 15 degree weather, for 15 points! Good enough for 3rd place in the 30-39 age group! Felt great, and it was awesome to start the new year off with such a good run. That will be my last race in the xx-39 age group...turning the big 4-0 in a few weeks. Looking forward to a great season in 2010 with EN!
  • Crossed the Finish line!

Noodle- definitely feel for your deprived running environment. I would gotten very sick of the cat. I sure hope you had some stellar tunes or audiobook to kill the boredom!

I ran almost all my 71 miles at the Y on a banked track over the basketball courts. Clockwise 4 days, counterclockwise 4 days. Since it's 19 laps per mile that would be 1349 laps for the Run challenge. At least I had a wide variety of fellow walkers/runners to motivate me and a chance to toss back basketballs that the goofy kids would loft up there!

Mike H. Superb runs this week! Thanks so much for leading the pack. Congrats to all the other participants who have shared these 8 days.

  • Happy New Year!!       The last run challenge day – yea!!

When I loaded my data into the tracking sheet last night, I decided I would go for the 100 point threshold. I sure should have figured this target out earlier in the week and I could have spread the fun out a bit better.  I needed 26 points today to hit the 100 level. I knew I did not want to over 2 ½ hours or RnP would show up at my door and set me straight. So that said, I needed to do a bunch of the miles at TP.

So I set the following plan for the work out. Warm up then 9 X 1 mile at TP with ½ mile at Z1 for recovery for a total of 15.5 miles. I made it through it. The last 4 mile repeats at TP became some real work.

This is the most miles I have ever run in a week. I expect the bike work out tomorrow will be more than interesting.

    Great work EN Team!

Also I thank you for again you motivating me to go beyond what I would accomplish my myself.

    Matt
  •  Thanks to all for the challenge!!! Christy, great finish line picture. Noodle, my husband laughed out loud at the walker picture. I bet they will talk about you for months to come at that fitness center. I did a measly 3 after planning an epic run with my daughter but the wind and the driving sleet and snow changed my mind.

  •  Ended it nicely.  We were watching my 2 young nieces today [6 months and 18 months] so that my sister inlaw and her husband could go to the Hockey game at fenway so it was very busy around here.  4 kids is a LOT of kids.  Manged to sneak out and run around the lake in the afternoon.  Had to go a little longer to turn the 8.6 into 9.  Under 32, over an hour and did one at 6:11 to get a total of 12 points for the day.  Really should have run a bit on the super cold day I took off for the bonus points but such is life.

Think it is really cool that they have races that end in a polar bear plunge.  Having had the experience I think that would be a cool way to start the year.

Hope that everyone had fun and NO ONE hurt themselves chasing spreadsheet glory!

  • Hey everyone!

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement!! Today was my biggest day - 16.6 miles.  This will just be a short post, and hopefully tomorrow I'll have a more elaborate post....

Quick update - I just added a counter (over to the right) for number of people who recorded points all 8 days - so far we're at 33!!  What a team!!!!!

    Mike

  • Happy New Year and thanks for all the inspiration and over the last 8 days. The hanging cat rules... next time I'm at the dentist and staring at the posters on the ceiling, I'll think of that for sure. Made it all 8 days, and minus a few adjustments, kept up with the Dec. OS bike workouts too. Tired but looking forward to a great 2010!
@Dan Kerr... are you a PSU alum/fan? I live in State College... crazy day around here.. glad they pulled it out in dramatic fashion.
Awesome job Mike and Team EN!
    Paul
  • All just so so so impressed with how everyone did. This was a team best in terms of participation and total mileage and total awesomeness. You all inspired me to run every day despite my cold and helped keep me focused...can't wait to crunch the numbers on monday (probably need to talk to mike) and hatch a challenge plan for the rest of the season. Enjoy your recovery!!!

Yes, Paul. My wife and I met there. We live in Lancaster now. Great game yesterday.

  • Thanks RnP for hosting this again, always a blast. Great to see so many participants. I didn't participate in the daily conversations as I was on a family vacation racking up SAUs image. Didn't bring a laptop either, just relied on the iPhone. Good but not great.

Did manage to get out every morning for an hour or so. It felt good to run everyday. Biking isn't going so well, but running... I'll wait for the next test, but hoping for a vDot bump.

Mike, unbelievable! Great job with all those miles!!
