Madison Open Water Swim - Saturday, August 20, 2011

Is anyone doing MOWS next weekend?

My SO and I have registered for it. Our plan is to do MOS on Saturday and RR #2 on Sunday.  We will be camping at Lake Farm Park Friday and Saturday night.

For those that have done MOS and IMWI in the past, how do they relate timewise? I'm hoping to get an estimated IMWI swim time from this race.   It's the same course, but less participants, so I expect it to be less of a fight in the water, and I won't have to worry about a 112 mile bike and marathon to follow.  If one is not wetsuit legal and one is not, then that will through a little wrench in the estimating.

  • I'm doing it and will be driving out to Verona to do a couple loops afterward. Not a full RR. There are several other folks signed up too.

  • MOWS and the actuall IMWI swim are pretty much exactly the same and your time should be about the same. MOWS will have enough people that it will still feel similar to an IM mass start as you will have people on every side of you until at lesat the first turn. After that it may thin out a little more depending on your speed compared to others.

When I did it in 2009 it seemed like about 75% of the people there went straight to their cars and road the course right after the swim.
  • Glad to hear it's similar. I'm doing it as well.

Planning on riding the course immediately afterwards, and following up with some food from Great Dane, celebrating the beginning of taper.
  • We considered riding the course the same day, but seemed like a LOT to do in one day and I'm not sure if I'm mentally ready for that yet. Maybe doing stick and one loop, and a brick run would be more manageable. I'll be up there this friday doing the stick and two loops at RR pace as well. Might be a game day decision.

There is a pretty good chance we'll hit up one of the Great Danes at least once that weekend image
  • I may do the swim as well on Saturday. But, may try to get in the RR bike/run done on Friday - just so many people out on the course during the weekend. I'm up for a gathering at Great Dane.
  • $20 Discount through tomorrow (Wednesday August 10) at 5:00 central time - makes up for the one-day "membership" you have to purchase at $18.

Also, registration limited to 500 people.

  • OK, just registered and am planning on biking the course after. Would it be better to drive from downtown to the start of the loop or just start the bike right there?

Eitherway there are going to be a TON of people on the course, so I would base it on how far you are riding...

If you are doing the full ride (i.e. 112) or about 70 (out/1 loop/back) I would just ride from the terrace.

If you are doing two loops (i.e. about 85) or some other combination, I would persoanly drive and park somewhere else.

I'm probably going to ride 4 or 4.5 hours after the swim (85 - 95 miles), so I will likely park in Verona like I usually do.

Even though it is unlikely the water temp will be over 76.1 on race day, I'm probably swimming in my tri shorts.  I figure this way I can get used to no wetsuit while other have them and I will have "worst case" time in my head after the swim.

I'll look for folks at the swim in the morning, I'm pretty easy to find... just look for some Zoot logos ;-)

  • Will there be a water temp cutoff for wetsuits for MOWS?
