Is the Mandatory Athlete Briefing Really Mandatory?

We rented a house about 20min from downtown.  After spending Friday afternoon at the rice site, we'd like to just chill at the house with our friends and family that night, including dinner at the house.  Do we really need to drive back to town for the athlete briefing?  Do they check if you went or not?  What info do they cover that we may need to know about?  This is our first Ironman, so don't want to miss out on something important, but also want to get in as much relaxation as possible.

Although, we may need some time away from our famlies and may go anyway

  • No. But I'm glad I went last year -- we learned the run course was shortened. It is worth at least sending one EN delegate.
  • I was thinking I could give a briefing on the rules during the team dinner on Friday night. Might also be good to deliver a quick talk on the bike course, stuff to know, etc.

  • Sue Chapman and I are going to the IM dinner so we can take notes.

  • @Mary - It would be awesome if you could post some notes to this (or a new) thread.
  • @ Mary - second Daniela's request. Every race briefing, I promise myself I will skip it next time. Having assurance that I don't miss any last-minute notices via a summary thread would be AWESOME.
  • Oh - one addendum. If someone could pay attention at the briefing and advise if drafting rules will be enforced in the bike path 'no pass zone' section, that would be good.
  • Dave, there won't be draft marshalls on the path. When I rode motorcycle support in '06, I think, the bikes and officials staged at the Clarion, at about John Nolen and Rimrock

Rich is correct, every year I have been there the draft marshalls have staged at the lot accross the street from the Clarionhowever, there was once a guy in a ref shirt standing on the bike path.  It's like 500 feet of no passing zone, so I don't think it is worth the risk of trying to pass someone.

  • Thanks. I had read somewhere that it was a couple of miles, but maybe the author was referring to the distance from the start instead of the distance of the no-pass.
  • @Dave - i don't know the actual distance, but i'm positive it is under a half mile, and probably less than a quarter mile. My 500 feet might have been a little short, but either way, there is a sharp turn to get on the path/go under the bridge and a sharp turn off, so it realy is not even worth the effort to accelerate to full speed in that section.

That said, I do get a nervous twitch when I get stuck behind the guys that insists on coasting the whole thing at 5mph, so I completely understand your thinking. It's just too short to matter in my opinion. Once you leave the path we go through a large parking lot and there is plenty of room to pass before we get to the Clarion/Rim Rock Road.
