IM Rookie must do's

I want to float some questions as an Ironman rookie that has never even been to an Ironman venue (couple of different 70.3's) for all the veterans that will be with us in AZ.

What EN resources are an absolute must review over the next 9 weeks?  (I have listened at some point in time to most of the podcasts in da haus but really there is so much that I could spend no time training until the race and never get through it all)

What if any major differences should I expect at the full ironman venue vs 70.3 races, maybe specifically IMAZ?

I have the IMAZ course talk downloaded for company tomorrow on the BTD (work Saturdays 6:00am- ~5:00pm so they never happen when they should) so some of this may be answered in there.

  • Mike:

Live, love learn everything in the Race Execution section of the wiki here:  http://tinyurl.com/43rugev  (scroll down to find it).  More specifically, the "IM How To" section and the Bike and Run Execution sections.  And the Race Rehearsal Protocol section.  Download/listen/read it all.  This is truly what EN is all about.  The jewels of racing the EN way.

It is funny you bring this up as Rich, Patrick and I spent a lot of time on a conference call yesterday discussing this for the new folks/first time IMers.  I am going to totally revamp the Race Central section over the next month or two to specifically identify this stuff and other things.  Basically, step-by-step "wha do I do next/where do I get it" stuff as you progress through your training Plan.

Looking forward to seeing with the others point out.

  • Mike, I hope this info helps and is what you are looking for. The IM is really a few day event. We flew into LOU. Thursday and put the bikes together that evening. Friday we checked in and got all our stuff, checked out the venue, and did a short run. IIRC Saturday morning there was a swim in the river. Differences are you'll have special needs bags to pack and transition bags to pack. Best to lay out all that stuff at home a week before so you are just going through the motions come race weekend. Make lists! Follow them! Bikes and transition bags get checked in Saturday. IIRC special needs bags are checked race morning. You'll also visit your bike one more time race morning to pump up tires, do bottles, etc. Then It's fun time! All the info will be in the race packet. Biggest thing is to do all the packing and organizing beforehand so you can just get there and have low stress and RELAX DAMMIT!!!!
