Team Get Togethers

With less than 2 months to go, as your race captain I would like to start planning the get togethers.  For those that have plane tickets, you know when you will be there.  For those that don't, or don't have driving plans yet, by having the schedule done early, it may help your planning.

First of all, I have 13 people on the race spreadsheet.  If you are racing, and you are not on it, please click HERE and get your info on it.  So far it looks like everyone will be there on or before Thursday.  Last year, and presumably this year, the Ironman pre-race banquet and athlete meeting was on Friday night.  The team dinner was that night as well, and was unable to be attended by some due to wanting to do the banquet.  We had an informal get together on Thursday, but not everyone was able to come to either one or the other (and Rich couldn't be there Thursday).  Obviously, as members of the same team, we should really try to all get together once before the race (other than 4 keys talk).  I propose that we have the team dinner on Thursday so that those that want to go to the banquet don't have to choose.  Is there anyone that can't make a 7:30ish dinner on Thursday night?

Next, on race night, Rula Bula is a great place to meet for race stories and beers.  It is an Irish pub with a great selection of beers, good food, and is only a couple blocks from the finish line on Mill Avenue.  I'll let Rich determine the time.

Next, I thought it would be cool to get together for breakfast on Monday morning at around 9:00.  There are two really cool places for breakfast that I like.  Breakfasts for large groups might be a little harder to plan than a dinner so I'm throwing it out there now to gauge interest.  I'm going to have John add a space for RSVP'ing for the breakfast on the spreadsheet (link above) so if everyone could go to the spreadsheet some time in the next couple of weeks and RSVP that would be great.

Finally, I have a customizable spectator guide for the race.  I have it in Word and PDF formats if anyone wants one.  Actually, I sent them to John.  Maybe he can post a link that can make them downloadable.

Happy training everyone!

  • Terry- I am good for a Thursday dinner at 7:30 and I am good for Breakfasts. Thanks for getting this all together!

  • I added my info to the spreadsheet.

I'm driving in on Thursday, from TX (as is my Dad from NorCal), so I cannot commit to a Thursday outing.

I don't have any intention on going to the 'official' pre-race dinner. Been there, done that, don't need to again.

ANY pub, but especially an Irish pub with good brews, is a great choice post-race.

Monday morning breakfast sounds great to me.
  • I am up for Thursday...I will be working all week in Tempe. As for post race....ummm....not sure what condition I will be in after the race. When is the 4 key talks normally scheduled?
  • @ Andrew - it will be on Saturday morning - there is only one opportunity to swim in Tempe Town Lake prior to the race and that is on Saturday morning. Last year I think the talk was about an hour after the swim - at like 10:00 or so.
  • Thanks Terry for putting this together. I've updated the spread sheet with my info. Dinner sounds great, doubtful for breakfast unless I have to be in town to take a roll down slot (how's that for positive thinking!!). We are staying in Glendale which is about 45 min drive from Tempe...so trips will be necessary ones only. Thanks again.
  •  Hey Jen,

If you were REALLY positive, then you would qualify in your age group and not have to wait for the rolldown.!!!

  • BTW - Al has brought to my attention all the events of Monday morning. Based on the schedule of everything, the breakfast will be at 9:00 AM. That should capture virtually everyone who wants to come that does not have a conflict like the roll down.
  • Thanks Terry - I thought i remembered reading from the coaches to skip the pre-swim and stay well rested on Saturday. What is the general thoughts from the team? Having volunteered last year, the water is cold and nasty and I am not convinced I need another OWS.
  • Waiting to hear from Rich to nail down team dinner night.

    You out there Coach?
  • You're right Jim...I'll have to start my visualization techniques now!!!
