You can absolutely export from trainer road to tcx and you can also upload to garmin connect from tcx and your virtual power numbers should come across as though they were power #'s - it's been a couple of years since I used VP but I'm near certain they come across.
The other option is to bring both sets of numbers into another 3rd-party site, like TrainingPeaks: export from both and import to TrainingPeaks.
Either option will give you the comparability you're looking for.
There is no way to have the TR VP # received by your 310xt. TR is receiving signals, presumably from your speed-cadence sensor, and interpreting it to come up with a VP#; TR is in no way transmitting.
To export from TrainerRoad: Go to TrainerRoad.com, log in, follow the Career link, scroll down to the ride you want to bring over, and click on the red "Download" button in the upper right. You have downloaded a local copy of the tcx file for your TrainerRoad ride.
To import to garmin connect: go to connect.garmin.com, log in, go to the "Analyze / Activities" tab, and click the "Upload" botton on the upper right. This will take you to the Upload page, which oddly has a big "Download" button right in the middle - go figure - but below that is the "Manual upload" link, which will allow you to select the tcx file you just downloaded from TR.
For those using TR with a CT, have you had any issue with TR not staying locked onto the COM port assigned to your CT? I did a workout yesterday no problem. Worked great, and I loved it. Then, I started playing around with TR, and downloaded the latest beta, which has Workout Creator software. Now, TR initially sees my CT, but then goes back to "searching" mode after a couple of seconds. Even if I edit the config file to assign the COM port, it starts searching again.
Anyone seen this? I tried going back to the last official release of TR (rather than the beta), but that does it, too. I'll send this to Nate, too. Just wanted to see if anyone else had observed this phenomenon and had a quick fix.
@ Steve ... I have no problems with the beta software ... yet. I've used it for two workouts. I will note that the CT USB cables seem to quit on me every year or two. I've gone through at least three of them in the past four years. Also, making sure that cable is secure in the head unit, and the head unit cable to the rear rotor is snug. Once I even caught that cable under the rear wheel, and wore off some insulation, that caused a problem.
Thanks, Al. It appears the USB dongle is working okay. Racermate CS has no problem controlling the unit. Reid at TR gave me a suggestion to try, which I will do when I get home tonight. I'll post here if it's a fix so that others may learn from my misfortunes.
Reid at TR informed me that unless a device (HR, PM, Speed sensor, Computrainer, etc) is actually outputting data, TR will report "searching" even though the device has been paired. I confirmed with my CT issues this morning. CT reported "searching" after I set everything up and had seen it pair with TR. Started up the wko and it worked just fine. I noticed the same "issue" with my PM and speed sensor. So, nothing is "broken". Just some strange (to me) reporting of the device status.
This may have been addressed elsewhere and I'm too blind to see it.
I think I've finally got a good grasp on how to use TR. I did my 20min test over again yesterday (b/c wasn't using TR correctly the first time) and got numbers for LTHR and FTP. However, the Bike Zones Calculator asks for these two numbers along with a Vo2 Power number ... where can I get that from TR, if at all?
"Power athletes: The average watts for the 5' test is your Vo2 power, used for future Vo2 workouts."
OTOH, if this number is substantially more than 120% of your FTP, you might want to just use FTP x 1.2 as your VO2 max, at least until you get your FTP higher. If it's lower, anything between 110 and 120% of FTP is a good number to use for training purposes. E.g., my VO2 as tested was 113% greater than FTP; I use 120% as my VO2 number for training, and am doing just fine.
Has anybody ever had an issue with TrainerRoad "Calibration"? I use an SRM for my power and used Trainerroad las yr and this summer and love it. Recently I have been getting some crazy power readouts on TR. Basically it is reading out almost 2x as high as my power should be. My Garmin Edge 500 reads out exactly what my RPE thinks my power should be, but TR displays a number twice as high at the exact same time (Cadence matches perfectly on the Garmin and TR).
Trying to troubleshoot, in the "Devices" tab, I can see my SRM Powermeter. There is a cell that shows a calibration number (don't remember exactly what this cell is called, and I don't have TR in front of me right now). If I change the number in this cell, the Power readout will go up or down. Does anyone know how to have this default to the correct number? I didn't manually set this when I started using TR and I'm not sure how it got off, but it is now off. Any thought?
John ..Make sure in your Devices/Profile...you have it set to Powermeter and not Virtual Power...I had this issue earlier in the year (last year I used Virtual Power...no have a PowerMeter)...I thought I had changed this in my profile but had not....once I changed it...problem resolved.
Thanks, I'll check it tonight. That would be really weird if it got switched because I have never used virtual power, but I'll certainly give it a shot.
@John- If that doesnt solve it . Shoot and email to Nate at trainerroad. They are very quick to get back and extremely helpful. I have only had 2 problems with TR (workouts not getting logged to career) and they have been quick to solve the issue both times.
I think the problem is your power source under the devices tab is still set
to your trainer instead of "Power Meter".
If you switch that back you should get the exact same numbers.
For your FTP test, if you take the average power of that 20 minute section
and multiply it by .95 you'll get your FTP. That way you won't have to do
another test.

Last year I started Trainer Road using Virtual Power....this year I purchased and have ridden with a PowerTap Pro...and am now beginning my OutSeason indoor training cycle. Today I did my 20min. test and all went smoothly...I really enjoy TrainerRoad and all the workouts...In my profile I am now set up as a power athlete...and the devices are PowerMeter and HR strap...these connected without problem at the start of my workout...My question involves the Power readings...so I did my test today I left my Garmin 310xt on my bars..just for kicks and curiousity..........given that the Garmin & Trainer Road are reading output from the Powertap ....(Garmin directly at the headset and TrainerRoad via the AntStick....what would cause discrepencies between the two device readings? Shouldn't they be the same?..Thanks. If necessary/helpful I could send the two workout files.
I recently joined TrainerRoad and add EN as a team. For some reason, the team workouts do not seem to be loading into custom when I open the TR app. has anyone else faced this issue and how can I resolve it?
Yes, I was added to the team earlier this week. I will try that again. Seems like I started typing the year on the off chance that it would work this morning. It that doesn't work then I will use their support.
Just a side note to whomever monitors the workouts... with about 3 weeks to go before IMAZ the 2013 IM workouts were gone and only the 2014 OS workouts were listed. I was OK, but something to keep in mind for next year. Thanks.
I've searched for "Endurance Nation" and "EN" under the TrainerRoad team search but don't see any matches. Is there another name used for EN team in TR?

Bang - all your data, one place.
Let us know if this works for you.

If only the CT were 21st century wireless!!!

@ Naomi The VO2 number is the average or normalized power from the 5 minute effort you did prior to the 20 minute effort.
From the test instructions:
"Power athletes: The average watts for the 5' test is your Vo2 power, used for future Vo2 workouts."
OTOH, if this number is substantially more than 120% of your FTP, you might want to just use FTP x 1.2 as your VO2 max, at least until you get your FTP higher.
