The "Heads We Win / Tails You Lose, Post Your Test Results" Thread

The NovOS'12 will be TeamEN's 6th or 7th round of outseason group training. One of our longest, most fun, and lucrative (for the coaches) tradition is the Heads We Win, Tails You Lose Bet. Here's how it works:

The Heads We Win, Tails You Lose Spreadsheet

  • Sign in and enter your information in the Base Data Table sheet of the spreadsheet
  • When you complete your tests this week, come back and enter your testing results in the spreadsheet AND post them to this thread so we can all see where everyone is starting from, jumpstart the accountability and team cammaraderie mojo
  • RnP will look at your results and set end of the OS goals for you, The Bet.

*Edit: when posting your results to this thread, please include age, weight, and w/kg, if you are riding with power. Thanks, just helps everyone get a picture of everyone else.

How the Bet Works -- it's very simple:

  • Meet or beat the goal we give you by the end of season? You buy us coffee, putting $5-10,000 on each of our Starbucks cards, entered on Sheet 1 of the spreadsheet, for your convenience.
  • Fail to meet your goal? You buy us coffee.

See? Very simple!

Thanks and don't forget to:

  1. Sign in on the spreadsheet
  2. After you test this week, enter your results on the spreadsheet AND in this thread as a post below.

  • Entering my data now, because I tested recently (enough) and will be travelling for work M-W this week, so I'll be missing those tests. Yes, I coordinated my work travel and customer outage time, opting to miss the tests and not the subsequent workouts

    Bike FTP - 249 (based on FTP test on 9/26 at end of GF plan)

    Run VDOT - 51 (based on half marathon 10/21)

    Weight - 172 lb

    W/kg = 3.19

    EDIT: Rich - I noticed on the base table that the years running and years biking show up blank, even though I entered in a value.  Not sure if that is intentional or not.

  • V02: 278

    FTP: 225

    Weight: 168

    Age: 40

    W/kg: 2.95

    Vdot: 47

  • First post edited to add instructions to also post age, weight, and w/kg to your results, if you're riding with power.
  •  Hmmm, I'm not sure I like this game .

    I'm thinking: If I meet the PnR goals, I get to buy race wheels in the spring!

    Yeah there's something suspicious about it, I just haven't quite figured it out yet.

    Most people get faster and somehow forget to do all the math at the end other than "how long should I "technially" wait for my old riding buddies?"

  • Biz travel tomorrow so did the bike test this morning (30 degrees out. . .brrrr)
    Bike FTP - 322
    Run VDOT - TBD
    Weight - 204 lb
    W/kg = 3.48
    Age: 38

    I'll update the run later this week. Psyched to have finally gotten started.

  • What tools are you using for Run VDOT, w/kg? I will use HR for my bike test tomorrow. What data should I show for that?
  • Aaron, do the test on a measure course, ie, run an actual, no joke 5k. I use a Garmin, others measure a course, go to a track, etc. Get your time and extract your VDot from that. We have a VDot calculator ^above^ under the resources tab above.

    The History of the Heads I Win Tails You Lose Bet

    One of my uncles introduced me to this "bet" when I was about 8 or 9. It took me about 20' to figure it out. I wasn't a very bright kid.

  • Bike FTP: 168
    Weight: 169
    w/kg: 2.2
    Run vDOT: TBD (38.2 earlier this year, but I've lost a lot of fitness since then)

    20 min - 266

    Run VDOT - 47.5 ( will retest later this week)

    Weight - 177 lb

    W/kg = 3.15

  • I want to sign up for the spreadsheet, but I don't have FTP. I used HR instead. Is there a way to convert or am I just out luck?
  • Ouch....bike power down 15% after 6 weeks of brain/body recovery...it will bounce back fast...I hope!

    Bike FTP - 275

    For HR athletes, should we post speed?  Guess it only matters if you know the course.  Recent Oly, 1:16.

  • Bryan, speed can helpful if you test / race on the same course and the conditions, especially wind, are similar.
  • spreadsheet updated...and ...

    Vo2 = 201

    FTP = 197x.95 = 187

    W/kg =3.05

    Weight= 135

    age = 44

    RUN TEST:

    3.1 Miles = 27:43

    Mile 1 = 8:50

    Mile 2 = 9:10 (little bit elevation gain/loss)

    Mile 3 = 8:50

    .10 = 8:33

    VDOT = 34

  •  Vo2 = 298

    FTP = 250

    Wt = 194

    W/Kg = 2.84

    Age = 47

  • Did it on a trainer:

    age = 42

    weight = 183

    Avg HR = 149 (max = 160)

    Distance = 12.2 miles

    Avg Speed = 18.2 mph (max = 22.5)

    Avg Cadence = 91

  • Hi,

    I don't see where we enter our bike test info for HR-based athletes in the spreadsheet.

    Chad
  • I did the bike test on Monday and came away with the following:

    5Min Power:  239

    20Min Power:  224

    FTP:  213

    Watts/Kg:  3.02

    My run test i did a couple weeks back by way of a 5K time trial.  Finished in 19:56 for VDOT of 50.  Quite honestly, I left it all out on the track, so i can't imagine running any faster, but i'm here to work and see what happens.

  •  Excited to be kickin off the OS....New Season...New Test....first time with PowerMeter...did the test indoors....FTP set @ 200.

    Will do run on Thursday.

  • Age - 40

    Weight - 240

    vDot - 30

    FTP (virtual with TR) - 224

    5min (virtual with TR) - 270

    w/kg - 2.05
  • Treadmill test this am

    2%

    5k @ 20:40 = VDot 47.5

    LTHR = 166

    HR max = 176

    Now it is time to build a bigger engine.  At the same time, maybe I'll learn to be a better driver during races too.

  • Hi all,

    Just did my very first 5k run test on the treadmill (2%):

    Time: 20:20
    Weight: 182 lbs
    Age = 42
    vDot: 48.9
    Avg HR = 147 (Max HR = 158)

    Faded a little bit in the last .5 mile. I was surprised my Avg HR was not higher. It seemed like my limiter to go faster was my ability to turn over my legs quick enough to keep up with the treadmill. I suspect this will get better over time as i focus on cadence and LFS.

    Chad
  •  Ok, looking for some goals!

    Bike test: No power meter data but did 40min. HR test. 14.7 miles  at 22mph pace. Avg HR 145.

    Run Test: 5K 23:20 ( 7:31 pace) vDot 42.  Avg HR 161

    weight 146 (want to loose 8!!)

  • Age: 35

    Weight: 180

    vDot = 53

    FTP = 215W

    VO2 = 290W

    2.6 W/kg

    These tests hurt so good!
