  • I bricked the run this morning. It snowed a lot yesterday and has gotten really cold here, so that means ice. In a stupid move to avoid traffic, I tried to change direction a bit too quickly and bit it. The good news is that the only thing hurt was my pride. After that I took it a bit safer and slower and got the work in. Now time to enjoy some football and family!
  • I normally bail on this run because its easy pace, short, would occur at night in the dark cold, and I figure the headspace requirements aren't worth it - but with today being a holiday it was obviously easier to get out during the day. I have to admit, the short, easy pace run was a nice departure from the typical intense runs. However, it's still cold out - so the idea of doing a long run of easy miles still isn't appealing. That'll probably wait until March.

@Scott - slipping on ice/snow is one of my primary concerns with winter running.  It's tough to keep in mind the idea that no single workout is worth injury and to bail on a run if the conditions just aren't solid enough.  Glad to hear just your pride took a hit!

  •  @ Scott: Sounds like you went SPLAT instead of BOOM! Glad to hear you're ok.  I'll let others chime in on the wisdom of running on ICE...!!!

  • I got a run in after the bike but it was into town. Slow pace but steep hills down and back up. Still feeling it from the blood donation.
  •  Got in a run, brick, after an intense bike today. My legs felt like they were sludge. But the slow pace made it relaxed and a bit more fun than some of the intense runs lately! Great job everyone!

  • Ran it as a brick and was my 8th day running - including Sunday-Monday back to back half marathons on the deadmill.

Simple straight up 5 miles, mostly @ MP

  • I got up early in the cold (temp 15F when I went out) and got in the VO2 run. The second 400 felt really rough, but I held on and added a little distance to this wko. Off to work!
  •  BOOM! Man, these are tough!  Did better than last week and was consistent across each effort. However, I overcooked each interval, and my 400 times were more than double my 200s so I need to work on nailng the pace ... But yepp, my legs are now officially tired.  Get after it, peeps!

  • Did the easy brick/strides yesterday in the cold rain. Actually enjoyed that. But... the VO2 intervals today felt awful!! After sleeping like crap which was after yesterday's 3x15 FTP bike (which, BTW - kicked my arse!), the legs were dead tired, the wind was blowing, roads were wet. Wah wah. Anyway - sucked it up and got it done. That's about all I can say about it.
  • Got the 4x200m @ 13.2km/h, 2x400m @ 13km/h, and 2x200m @ 13.3km/h done! It was good (but tough) and I really felt like I was strengthening my mental muscle with these ones. Back to work now! Sigh.
  • done w/ today's track wko. was suffering a bit on the 2nd 400 and had to navigate some icy patches on the track. have fun all!
  • Love VO2 run workouts. Short, hard, and done. A total of 7.5 miles in 1:00 with 2x200, 4x400, & 4x200, all within 5 seconds of assigned IP. 1st run of the new year good.

    Keep on the gas everyone.
  • VO2 run done - man, it was cold out there today.
  • Almost bailed on this due to temps, thinking that if I couldn't get warmed up it might not be worth the risk. Ended up giving it a shot, and glad I did, because it actually wasn't bad at all once I did warm up.
4x200, 4x400, 4x200 - still need to work on pacing for the 400's (and the first 200's, because I way overcooked a couple of the first ones out of the gate), but then again the ones where I missed the pace was also the portions where there was an incline on the route I took - so in those cases I just tried my best to keep RPE consistent.

Last week, thanks to the garmin foot pod I got for christmas, I found that during faster intervals, my cadence seems to drop a little bit - so this week I was able to pay more attention to that. Had good results - now just a matter of getting that cadence into muscle memory during faster stints and/or when I tire.

I love these workouts too - short, sweet and done.
  • Hi all,

Track is covered in snow, and the treadmill...well... treadmill is a run-of-last-resort for me... so I measured out 1/4m in a local neighborhood using mapmyrun, and I think it worked out pretty well.  I know my 7mm pace (it's the fastest I can run smoothly), and based on my times my 1/4m in the 'hood was pretty close to spot-on.  Actual times:

    1:41

    1:45

    1:43

    1:45

    1:46

I simplified the workout to 5x1/4 because I didn't have a good 200yd marker and felt the margin of error as a percentage of distance would have made it impossible to manage or assess my pacing.  I'll use the same course again for future workouts.

Way to get it done, everyone - seems I'm not the only one dealing with some winter weather.

Did the easy brick/strides yesterday in the cold rain. Actually enjoyed that. But... the VO2 intervals today felt awful!! After sleeping like crap which was after yesterday's 3x15 FTP bike (which, BTW - kicked my arse!), the legs were dead tired, the wind was blowing, roads were wet. Wah wah. Now here is a post that describes my workout best! I also slept poorly from being over-tired and woke up to 34 degrees with 12mph wind with gust up to 19mph. So, I figured some other poor teammate was in worse conditions and I might as well knock this one out.  I struggled for the first 4 X 200, but went faster each one. Then the same for the next 4 X 400. For the last 4 X 200, I started the first as fast as the last one I did and got faster for each one.  Made it into work a bit late and have been mentally running until now.

Glad this one is done! Time to set up for morning and hit those 1' intervals on the bike!

  • This run workout was pretty hard. The section of the track by the home stands is apparently shaded enough such that the snow and ice just won't go away easy unless the temps rise well over 40. Enough of the track was clear for the 200's so they were accurate but the 400's required some cutting across the field to get back onto the track. so they're a little long.

    43, 47, 44, 45 - 200's
    103, 101, 102, 103 - 400's
    44, 46, 47, 43 - 200's

The effort felt pretty hard but it was worth it. I didn't spend much time cooling down at all, just went back to the car as fast as I could manage. Damn cold.
  • We have a small track at the Y (14 laps for each mile), but I prefer that to dark icy roads or the treadmill for the shorter VO2 runs. Made a mental error today though and thought 200m was .25 miles, so started out with 4 x 400 (.25 miles) instead of 4 x 200. Realized my error at that point. Since the total VO2 distance was supposed to be 2,000m, did one more 400 and called it good. Did some easy running to round things out. Felt really good on the intervals and hit target paces without too much trouble.
  • Got in the run after work today 4X200, 4X400 and 4X200 all at 9:05 on the treadmill.  Felt hard towards the end but not really hard.  Famous last words and we will see how the VO2 bike goes tomorrow am.

  •  Did the VO2 run yesterday.  Forced outside, and it was cold and a bit slushy.  Got 'er done.  The workout stated 3x200, 1x 400 and 3 x200 but I find the 200s a bit easy, so I did 2x200 and 3x400, equal rest.  Overcooked a couple of them into the headwind but was glad to have the garmin (nanny) on my wrist buzzing and alarming to remind me to slow down.

Did the strides run tonight- first -15C run of the year (-25C with the windchill).  Not too bad when out of the wind, miserable against the wind.

  • Gonna bail on today's VO2 runs. Long day and have racked up 58.5 miles in the past 8 days for the HRC. Need a break.

Looks like most everyone is really nailing the repeats. Nice work to all!
  • I had already planned to hack the VO2 max intervals during the OS, and in the case of running mostly because I've had some injuries in the past when trying to run too fast. So opted today for a 1 x 0.5 mile at z4 (3') + 2 x 1 mile z4 (5'). (This is similar to what we used to do in the first half of the OS, when Wednesday's run was either the same or 0.5 miles less than that of the following Sunday. So today, I did what we're gonna have to do on Sunday, minus 1 x 0.5 mile).

Intervals went well, felt tough as usual. My legs are always pretty cooked after these intervals on the treadmill. But, we got'er done!
  • Finished the run tonight after work. It was a challenge to get on the trainer, but felt great once I started. 4x200, 2x400, and 2x200 at 6:00 with equal recovery. The wine always tastes better after a workout.
  • Just grabbed a gel from my gym bag and realized I didn't bring the garmin today... How will my feet ever work without the electronic tracking device?
  • Disaster averted! Garmin was in my shoe. Anywho, trail run today, 4 miles in 36 minutes. A bit of terrain thown in. Good times. Looking forward to the rest day!
  • Rest day is in full effect! A bit of ab work, a couple sets of pull ups (the Marine Corps and the wife frown on my dream of a Andy Schleck-like upper body) and 30+ minutes of lower body stretching. Feels good, but I have to watch the calorie intake on these days. Hope everyone is maximizing their recovery.
  • Switched around my w/o for this weekend and did my Sunday run today instead. Half mile and full mile intervals were done on the treadmill (last mile was a little rough) and then I ran home from the gym since it's a balmy 19F and sunny today. Still building my long runs with the goal of working up to 90 - 120 minutes.

Wishing everyone a good run tomorrow (Sunday).
  • Did today's workout as a brick as usual... i was trashed after the bike and the run was also a big struggle. Set the treadmill to HM pace and was fighting cramping in my quads and having difficulty breathing. Just could not get enough air into the system. After the 10' at HMP I was done, was not able to continue at MP but ran below easy pace.
  • I bricked the run today, like most Saturdays. I even took the dog with me. He was happy to join and helped drag me into the right pace to start. Got it done, a bit too hot but not bad, and 2.75 in 20 min.
