Tour of Sufferlandria, starting 26 Jan

Time for some fun with your fitness.  Reference to this has been on the dashboard twice.  The boys over at Sufferfest are sponsoring a 9 day PAIN tour, I personally think it will grow to be larger than the TdF.  I've got my minions down in the pain cave right now polishing up my bike, coating my chamis, and washing my leader's jersey.

Starts 26 January and the final stage is 03 February.

You'll have to decide for yourself if this can be worked into your training plan, but I'm in!  You are probably not worthy to represent the motherland.

  • Bad link? You may need to check the size on that leader jersey. It might be too big for you... ( I love sufferlandria trash talk!)

Honestly, I am intrigued! I MAY be in. I gotta talk to my orthopedist first... LOL
  • What are the pros and cons of working this into the plan? I'd love to hear people's thoughts on it!
  • Would be interested in Coaches' input for JOSers....
  • This is something that I am hoping to do. It will be the last week of the NOS for me and I have a break scheduled after that, so I am thinking it fits in nicely with my plan. I am actually looking forward to it. I plan on putting off my final bike test of the OS, and moving it to the Wednesday after the tour. How does that sound? Sort of like a big bike week but on the trainer.
  • @ Rachel, everyone's plans/goals are different. For me (coming to the end of the November OS and with a early season IM in May), this works well. I'm skipping the last week of the NOS, a testing week, and inserting this as a mini-bike bump. I'll find a 5k/10k race to make up the VDOT test and will test outdoor FTP on my tri-bike when I start my IM build 3 weeks after this ends. So again, for me, I think it meshes well with my overall goalsl. Plus, it sounds like a really fun thing to do (which is the whole point of this triathlon stuff).

For JOS'ers (or a first time OS'er), the timing is probably not ideal from a sticking with the OS plan perspective. But again, it all depends on where you are, what your goals are, and the importance you place on different stuff within your season. Good luck making the right decision for you!
  • IN.

Had me at “The course is carefully balanced between agony, misery and despair."
  • I'm in too. Been thinking about it for a while and I've decided to call it a big bike week. My 11 year old wants the iPad mini if I win it image
  • I'm on the fence. I'm tentative only because I may lose my sanity due to 9 straight days on the trainer for 1 hr+.
  • I'm IN! Its a personal challenge really!
  • Do you have to own the videos to compete?
  • Good to see we do have some interest.  If you haven't joined in event page on Facebook (and you like such thing), do so.  Sufferfest updates notes about every other day with news and you can join the smack talk.  Additionally, I found a very useful excel file that can generate your zones based on your desired effort levels.  Its the ERG spreadsheet on the Technology tab on the linked page.  Basically, on page 2 of this spreadsheet, input 3 values:  FTP, Recovery % of effort and Maximum % of effort and it will spit out what each interval effort should be at (i.e. what the boys mean when they say effort of 9).  For my values, I intend on using my tested FTP, 50% for Recovery, and 120% for Maximum.  The 120% is based on the fact that I use Revolver for some of my VO2 intervals and the effort for those intervals is 10.

Moving into prep for this week (as I'm in the Nov OS), I'm going to manipulate my schedule as follows:

    • Monday (Rest) As Scheduled
    • Tuesday - FTP Bike as Scheduled / Easy Run as scheduled
    • Wednesday - Interval Run as scheduled
    • Thursday - Long run at steady pace (without FTP or VO2 intervals)
    • Friday - Rest
    • Saturday until the Tour finishes (or until I pop) - Tour of Sufferlandria

I hope that others join me in this thread posting the good/bad/smack talk that should go down with something like this!  I will definitely use any and all mojo that others can share with me and hope to help some other peeps out with my own.

Good luck everyone.  Lets get after this one.

  • @Jason: I don't think you need to have the videos. It would be a lot more fun if you had them though.
@Roy:TrainerRoad integrates your power zones with the video. For some of the older ones you need to "encode" the video via Handbrake software (demo on TR site). Good luck to everyone.
  • @Brian, I'm not on trainerroad. PT and Garmin 500 only. I realize the spreadsheet is built for folks using TR, but it is also useful to to figure out what each different intensity level is meant to be given what you input as your goals. I'm writing each power goal / number on my white board and will reference during each ride.
  • @Roy: The rules say you need to be on TrainerRoad to qualify for prizes so you might want to sign up. It is well worth the $10/month.
  • @B, I'm in it for the glory of suffering not any mere material prizes image Of course, if they make a t-shirt for this, I'm definitely down with throwing down on that. Since I have real power and program my workouts in the garmin software, I don't have a need for TR. That's $10 a month I can spend on one of the many other dollar sucks in this sport. Obviously, YMMV. Good luck!

  • Looks like a lot of fun. I think its too much for my training plan.

I was under the impression you needed to own the video's to do those workouts? Is this not the case?

All those participating should post there TR usernames so we can follow along! Good luck to all.
  • All videos cue up and labeled by day (and now paid for, sorry Sufferfest guys). Fresh batteries in my Power Tap (definitely don't want to show up to a stage with no power). Power zones printed out and posted in my direct line of sight. Refreshing my Power Gel supply tomorrow. Mid-tour massage lined up. Sufferfest Technical T-shirt picked out as a reward for pain and misery dealt out (only to be purchased after completing all stages).

I'm actually kinda excited about doing this. Should be a 'fun' time. Hope everyone feels comfortable sharing their ups and downs, I don't want to be talking to myself. Good luck with your final prep everyone!
  • Oh crap!  Haven't been on my bike in months but thought I would give this a try.  Could be the mojo I need to get my fat arse on the bike.

Maybe start my FT @ 150 and adjust up over the days?

    This is gonna hurt!

  • WTG Stark! Carl is in as well. Time to pack the bags for the trip to Sufferlandia!
  • Bike has been in the trainer for a week now so I guess now is as good a time as any to get back on the horse.  Will set it all up tomorrow.

You, me and the Beaver?  Gonna be a party.

Remember, what happens in Sufferlandia stays in Sufferlandia.

  • Well I pulled out;(. I know myself to well that trying this as well as the JOS I would end up injured. Maybe next year!
  •  OK,  If Carl is out  . . . . so am I!

    NOT!

Hell Hath No Fury is cocked and loaded into my Trainer Road software, Joule is charged and trainer is functional.  Set my FT @ 150 to start and will adjust up over the coming days as I get a feel for my power level.

Now I just have to get up in the morning and be in Tom Glynn’s Pain Cave at 8:00 AM PST.

So who is in with me and Comiskey?

    For sure:

    Glynn

    Stark

    Comiskey

    Ezell

    On the fence:

    Culberson

    Eritou

    Beal

    Sarti?

    Out:

    The Beaver

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • Stephanie Stevens is already up the road in the break.  Hope we get some more action going.  Good luck everyone!

My zones and Tour number posted up in prep for tomorrow morning!

  •  Roy:  Your FT is 290!?  WOW!  I am half the man you are!  :-)

    Let's get this party started!

  • @Stark, I'm actually at 301 image. But I'm a big dude so my watts/kg isn't too impressive. The numbers on the white board are my EN standard workout targets for each type of interval. The big chart hanging next to my Tour number over the motivation board is my tour zone target list. I'm not on TR, so I needed something to tell me what each numerical assignment was (I.e. when Gunter says 8.5, I know what power to hit).

    Getting hyped for tomorrow morning!
  • Stark: Carl's transition from Honey Badger to Beaver - is that intentional or accidental? Just saying. I might have recruited John Molchin also. We will see. Good luck to all.

I was yanking Carl's chain with the whole Beaver thing to see if he would bite..  But he never bit.  :-)  I like Honey Beaver myself.

But now that he has bailed should we call him Honey Hamster?
