  • Whoop! Its that time of year again!!!

I'm Rian, this will be IM x 3 for me, and IMAZ x2. I live in Flagstaff, Az about 2hrs north of Phoenix in the mountains where the air is cool and thin. I'm clawing my way back from health problems this spring that made me loose the gains from outseason and  DNS IMCDA, so now I'm really gunning for IMAZ take 2.

I'll be planning to do at least RR#2 on the course when the time comes, so if anyone is thinking about making the trip let me know!

  • Hey there! Im Danielle and IMAZ will be my first IM! Ive raced 2 HIM this summer and am ready to begin the intense training for the full. I live outside of DC (VA side) and am excited to start the 12 week IM program leading up to AZ. Hope it starts cooling off in Tempe soon image
  • Rian, we've probably crossed paths in Flagstaff without knowing it. I live in Cornville and husband and I do our summer long rides on Lake Mary Road, but won't be there for the next few week-ends . Will also being doing RR on the IM course this fall and we'd love to meet up with you for that.

IMAZ will be my 7th IM, 3rd at IMAZ. I'm not fast, so I'm chasing the Kona Legacy Lottery or qualify when I'm 65 when no one else shows up in my age group - whichever comes first. Love this course, especially since I can train on it when the temps aren't above 100. Fortunately, temps in November are more conducive for racing.

If you haven't ordered your EN race kit yet, do so early so you can train in it before race day. My first EN race was IMCDA in June and got lots of good mojo from other team members on the course that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been wearing the team top. When the going got tough, this made me dig deeper. Even had members who finished early come back to the finish to cheer me in to a late night finish - that was special.

Looking forward to meeting the rest of the IMAZ team in November.
  • Hello all- IMAZ will be IM number 5 for me. I have taken two years off from IM and am back this year to have fun as primary goal, but to also raise the bar for myself also in terms of performance expectations. I have been fairly focused on AZ since the 20wk out point in time. I think we have 13 weeks to go if I am counting the calendar weeks correctly.

This is my first IM where I am actually spending sometime swimming. Prior IMs all minimal swimming with all around 1:20 time; I would like to shed 5 plus minutes off, if possible, OR just exit the swim with expending a lot less energy than prior history.

    Hope everyone is training well.
  • Yes it's AZIM Time again!
This is IM 2 for me-AZIM 2012 being my first. I signed up on saturday before the race last year as I knew my projected time(which I hit exactly) was short of my fitness goal. So trying again this year.
I live in the neighborhood-up the road in scottsdale. I did two Olympics as well as the splash n dash series in TT lake this spring. And Kansas HIM In june. Looking forward to the training rides on the beeline highway this fall. Be sure to check out the website 'Best Buddies' as there are two supported rides the last Saturday of September and October on the course by this organization. And the last splash n dash is a 3000m the weekend before AZIM! Look forward to seeing some of you at these sessions?!

And Patricia-you and I think alike. I'm planning on Kona when I'm 65 and all the fast girls in my age group have done Kona and are 'over it'!!
  • Hi All,

I'm Steve, this is IM #3 for me and first time at IMAZ. Hope everyone's training is going well. Spent most of last season dealing with plantar fasciitis, so happy to be healthy and racing this season. Had my best 5K test in almost 18 months last week, so excited about the next 12 weeks of training and looking forward to IMAZ!
  • Hello All,

My name is Jim Yanoschik and I am from Murrieta, CA (1 hour north of San Diego).  This will be #26 IM but first at AZ.  If I can train for this IM then I will be happy.  I had knee surgery last year for a torn meniscus from a fall down the stairs after my dogs took me out.  Then earlier this year I had cancer surgery.  So I am on the rebound and ready to start the 12 week program.  If I can get enough training I will toe the start line.  Right now if I run for any length or for a couple days in a row, then the knee puts me out of commission for a couple days.  Very frustrating since I have been blessed with not a major injury for over 25 years of endurance sports.  Swimming and biking are OK, but my levels need to improve.

I volunteered last year as a Standup Paddleboard escort and then signed up for the race.  I look forward to the group keeping me on track and focused.  I signed up for the Tempe Olympic on Sept 22nd.  I will be coming over on Thursday and ride/run the course the couple days before.  I am not able to make the Soma triathlon in October so this was the only way that I could swim in Tempe Town Lake before the event.

  • Hey Jim - there you are; I thought you went MIA. Sorry about the challenges you have faced this year. I hope I get the opportunity to share the start line with you. I thought after we hung out last year, that chances were good we would be having a race pace very similar. Keep the faith and focus. Positive thoughts and strong desire will have you there.
  • @ Dave-Yes it was great to meet you last year.  I wish that I could keep up with you on the bike and run.

After the EN team showing at IM Lou, IM Lake Placid and IM MT, there is a lot of pressure on Team EN IM AZ to produce.  I like the idea trying to keep each other accountable through this forum.  I hope to have some really good workout this Labor Day weekend while not digging myself too big of a hole.  Everyone have a safe weekend training.  I know a lot of the Southwest has some monsoon conditions so stay hydrated.

  • Hey Team,

My name is Mike Egan, I live on Long Island, New York. IMAZ will be my first IM. Really glad I joined EN, it really offers sooo much info and team spirit. I've been plugging away, and hope I can finish sub 13. I'm sure I will posting some questions for the AZ people, I.e. the weather at race time, course questions and so on. Good luck everybody! Talk soon....
  • 5th time @ IM AZ, my favorite race! But first, I gotta get thru Tahoe in two weeks.
  • I am heading back as well. Just getting into training after IMMT. This will be #4 for me. I am also planning to do a RR on Saturday 10/26 with the Best Buddies group. That was great last year! Betsy will be there, who else?
  • @David Ware-did you notice that the big bike days changed on the schedule this year.  The supported rides fell exactly into the same weeks on the plan in 2012.  The 2013 plan says week 15 and 18.  the 10/26 ride is week 17 (and sept ride is week 13). Hmmm.

Go to the excel and beyond, tempe website to sign up.  Price went down to $20/ride

  • @David and Bestsy: I was just puzzling over this the other day. I cant decide if I want to move my RR#2 back a week to do it on the supported ride day, or just keep the schedule as is. I did really like having the supported ride for that RR, keeps it simple.

  • @Rian-great job on your BTD!
As for scheduled 100mi rides, I had another question for coache in micro thread so I threw this dilemma at him too. I have had this planned in my mind/schedule since last year so I asked why the change.
  • @Betsy and Rian: RR2 use to be 2 weeks before race and was pushed back to 3 and now returned to 2. I have already made plans to travel to Az that weekend and I do better with a little more rest so I am going to do the supported ride. I may do another shorter type RR the next weekend.
  • Great David-I'm in too. Look forward to seeing you on the 26th!
  • Hi everyone!

My name is Wolf Gottschalk and I live in Vienna, VA. IMAZ will be my first Ironman, and I am relatively new to the sport. I did one HIM last year as (essentially) my first tri and then an Oly. this year, I did two HIM and an Oly in prep for my IM. I don't do well with posting in forums, etc, simply because of time/schedule but have been lurking as a Team EN member since January. So much info and mojo it's crazy, and so many incredibly talented, fast, and smart people! Very cool! I've got tons of questions and info I'm looking to get input on that I've accumulated over the past few months that I will gradually start asking everyone (don't want to inundate everyone with the list, which rivals a chapter of "War and Peace" at this point). Also, I've got some specific goals for IMAZ that I would love feedback on that I will ask you in the other thread in this forum. Please correct me when needed if I am posting things in the wrong places, etc. Thanks! I'm ready to hammer!! How about you? image
  • Hello people .I'm Eric Blakie from the North of the UK.This will be my 30th full Ironman---yes I know --don't know what's causing it yet.Had poor races at Couer d'Alene and Japan this year due to my own lack of flexibility/thinking on feet during changing race conditions and hoping to have one good race this year. After 2 supporting visits this year my wife ,given the option, has declined this time so I'll be by myself---actually its easier as IM participants are a pain pre race week !!!!
  • Hi All!

Trish Marshall here, from Troy MI, just outside Detroit. this will be IM#4 for me, and my first at IMAZ. I wish I could swing a trip out to do the RR on 10/26, but I don't think finances will allow. I know about 20 from my local club and tri scene here in the D that are coming to race IMAZ. So, lots and lots of MOJO between EN and my local tri peeps! image

This is the race I hope I can muster the IM run I've been looking for (my weak link I'm afraid) since doing my first IM in 2010!

Oddly, my motivation is not stellar. This is my fourth year racing a long course race late (its COLD here in November!!!) in the season. BUT...I've got fish to fry in AZ so I will put my head down and work! image

Looking forward to meeting everyone in Tempe!
  • I am really looking forward to seeing Al, Eric, and Dave again at the races.  It will be like old home week.  I hope that Eric will share his pickle juice formula on the run with our group.

@Trish- originally from Dearborn Heights/Northville in Detroit area.  Went to U of M but have lived in California for over 30 years.  Still follow the Tigers, Red Wings, Lions and Pistons.  My wife's family is from Troy, but she is a native Cal gal.  I always thought that one of the hardest thing about training for IM AZ is that most triathletes seasons are done while we are ramping up our training and the days are now getting colder and darker.  It is good that there is some fellow Midwestern triathletes that will continue their training.  And thanks for the quote "Ironman doesn't give a SH*t...."  Love it because it got me to the pool this morning.

  • Hi:

Brian Comiskey from Orland Park, IL checking in. This will be Ironman #9 for me and my first time racing AZ. I just raced IMOO almost two weeks ago and am looking forward to getting back into training. I have usually done two races per year with IMFL as the late season race. Looking forward to coming back to Tempe as went to school at ASU ('91).
  • Hello All!

I'm Kevin Zielke and IMAZ is the race where I will either have to accept the fact that, no matter how much training and tinkering and general obsessing I do over these things, I'm a 13-14 hour IM finisher OR it will be the race where I see some evidence that, somewhere in me, I have the ability to race at the level I think that I can.

I became interested in triathlon in early 2011. During first sprint distance May 2011, I ended up having to flip onto my back during the swim to regain my composure and I thought, as I looked up at the sky, "I will never ever ever do this again." But, realizing I had nowhere to go but up, I became interested in seeing what improvements I could make. So, I did the REV3 70.3 events at Cedar Point in 2011 and 2012 (notching a PR of 5:15 in 2012).

Then I headed down to Panama City for Ironman Florida 2012. I found it very difficult to keep my nerves in check in the days leading up to the race. Staring out at the post-Superstorm Sandy waves crashing on the beach did NOT help! I muddled through the swim and the bike in a decent enough time only to be crushed two miles into the run. A very long walk ensued and, when I got my finisher's medal with a time of 13:58, I said "I will never ever ever do this again".

But I continued to believe that I had a much better race in me somewhere. I signed on with EN, stuck to the JOS, HIM and IM plans as prescribed, worked on improving my nutrition planning and made it to the finish line at IMWI a few weeks ago...in 13:31. An underwhelming outcome, to say the least.

Now I'm set to cross swords with IMAZ. Will the third time be the charm? We shall see...

  • Kevin ... With a 5:15 HIM, no question you do have a much better IM in you. IM AZ is the place to find out. Sounds like pre- race & swim anxiety issues, along with bike/run pacing, are the stumbling block.

HA!  I've told some friends this in prep for their first IM's...haven't had to tell myself it much till this year! image  Glad it helped get you in the drink.

I just loaded the rest of the plan into my TP account this am...wowza...lots of work to be done!  I watched to Coach Patrick's  video for week 12 too...exactly what I needed to hear!

  • You're singing my song, Al!
  • Hi, I'm Jason Brandt from Auburn, WA and IMAZ will be my first IM. Did Boise 70.3 in June with a 5:27. Training has been going well though I broke my hand in August on Day 7 of a guys MTB trip from Durango to Moab and required surgery and 6 weeks of a cast, thankfully a swimmers cast so I could keep my training up. Cast came off one week ago. Open Water group swimming has wrapped up here so will need to find a swim buddy to join me for several moree lake swims before IMAZ.

Was in Tempe yesterday and rode one loop of the bike course with a friend that raced IMAZ last year.

Look forward to meeting the other EN members racing IMAZ! Good luck in all of your training!
  • I was just in your area at the end of August - my daughter lives in Black Diamond - we may have crossed paths. Her husband, my husband and I did IMCDA together in June.

Bummer on the arm, but glad it didn't keep you from training. Didn't know there was such a thing as a swimmer's cast.

Looking forward to meeting you next month. AZ weather will definitely be an improvement over WA then.
  • Jason Barrett checking in. IMAZ will be my 2nd IM and first for my wife (Lindsay). I'm really excited for her and looking forward to meeting everyone!
  • Hi All, Cathleen White, this will be my 2nd IM event, the first was Louisville last year and was a struggle all day. looking forward to seeing everyone in AZ.
