Creating an EN MS Excel Training Log...

  • @Patrick - I never got your email!!  Did you use my old work address (the cfamllc.com address).  About three weeks ago I resigned and started a new gig - so I'm hoping that's why I never go it!  You can use the dpleventhal@gmail.com going forward - that's my personal address.  Sorry about the confusion.

This will be a fun project...I worked on it some more over the weekend and will hopefully be able to devote some more time late this week and into the weekend.  I've got in my head a pretty good feel for how I think beta v.1.0 should look/work.  I'm building in three user defined fields that folks can use or not use however they like.  So if they want to capture the number of dogs they see or their sweat rate or the number of pulled muscles per run they'll be able to do so!

  • @Laura - I am sharing this link to the google doc

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Akei69P9SwBYdEJvT3RkeGZZeGJERE5QRVFsWVozY3c&usp=sharing

Feel free to play with it. You can probably save a copy.

The work being done on the excel spreadsheet looks way cooler. It looks like he plans to use a macro to build multiple rows of all the workout data. My simple scheme has one enter the workout data directly. There are links that summarize the data on the planning page which also shows your events in the correct week. I moved the graphs to their own page. In general, the cells colored yellow have formulas that make summarizing data easier for various VLOOKUP type functions.

This is just a knock-off of what I use. It is fairly idiosyncratic - I am not suggesting that the team embrace it.

  • Okay...I've finished a beta version 1.01 of the training log.   The EN site won't let me upload the Excel spreadsheet (presumably because it has macros in it); so I've posted it up to my blog.

Here is the link to the post:  CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE BLOG POST

The post is password protected since this is really just for EN folks.  The password is "workworks" (without quotes).

So...you should go there now, download the file to your machine, enable the macros, read the instruction tab and then start playing around with it.

Let me know if something doesn't work and what you feel is missing.  Keep in mind no single spreadsheet is going to scratch the itch for everyone - but hopefully this gives most people most of what they think is helpful.

    Have fun.

    - David

  • WOW. Wow. image Nice!!! I downloaded and on the older version of excel...came through okay with a bug at workout entry, but it could be my XLS version.

I think this is just plain awesome. Seriously. I can track my resting HR, hours sleep if I want...I get all my data, etc....

REALLY curious to hear what some of you other smarty pants people say so we can tighten this up and start pushing to the TEAM!

    Thank you David!!!

    P

  • Patrick - glad you like it!

Please make sure you let me know what the error says so I can correct it.

    - DPL
  • @David, thanks for spending the time to put this together. I went to your blog to download the file , but I am unable to open it. Says " too large to open" . You have any solution for this?

  • David this is awesome! I have seem so many off Slowtwitch and thought ugh. You could sell this baby!!! I will start using it and be your beta guinea pig. What is your Starbucks card number?  I will buy you several eggnog lattes!!!!
  • Looks great, David!
  • UPDATE:

A couple of things.  I tried to keep the file size small (<1MB) the log itself is less than that size but the image on the instruction tab doubled the size of the file.  </p>

So, I've pulled the instructions into a separate .PDF file.  The link for the instructions is http://davidleventhal.files.wordpre...ctions.pdf

The tracking log is now smaller by about 40%.  I also made a couple of edits (both in formatting and in the way the code runs) - so the version is now Beta v.1.02 and can be downloaded at this link:

    http://davidleventhal.files.wordpre..._1-02.xlsm

Note - you may get a warning that says "The file format and extension of "en-workout-log_beta_1-02.xls" don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust the source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?" Click "YES"

And for those who are so inclined (@Ray) - I do indeed have a slight Starbucks addiction...if you feel so led my Starbucks card number is 6058 0145 2545 9100. Any donations are greatly appreciated...but definitely not expected.

@Jan - send me your email address and I'll shoot you a copy of the file directly.  It's not a large file so size shouldn't be an issue. We can troubleshoot it off line.  My email is dpleventhal@gmail.com

  • I am hitting your card David!!!!
  • David - thanks so much for investing your time in all of us!! You rock! I am using Excel 2003 (SP3) and can't seem to open the file. Help please! Anyone else having this problem? What version Excel do I need to open the file? Error message reads: "This file is not in a recognizable format".

    Wolf

  • @Wolf - I just emailed you the file.  As I recall you had the same problem with the nutrition planning spreadsheet.  Anyway - check your inbox and let me know if you're able to open it up.  Again - all others can grab it from this link:

  • Hi David:

Thanks for all of your hard work. Question, does it auto update so that any computer I access the spreadsheet from will show the latest info, or is it centric to one computer?

    Hi David:

David, unless you are using a third party program where you store documents in the cloud you'll only be able to access this from a single machine.  For example, I have my company set up with Microsoft 365 and we have a Sharepoint site...each person has a "private" section (as if anything is ever private anymore) & a shared section.  I can access & update documents in either section from my iPhone (through a MS app), my home computer, my office computer or on a public computer (by logging in through their web application).

However, for the vast majority of people this resource will simply be a file on their home computer that they update post-workout.

    Hope that helps.

  • @David

Your spreadsheet looks way cool! I couldn't tell if the input screen also lets you scroll through workouts either to review them or perhaps to fix data that was entered incorrectly. Thanks for your efforts.

If you've downloaded the Beta v.1.02 from my blog (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD - PASSWORD is "workworks" without the Quotes) then the rows 2-5002 on the tab labeled "Workout Log" are editable...so you can correct data entry errors or items you forgot to add.

One thing to keep in mind is that the charts & summary tables won't refresh if you just fix/key in data directly onto that tab.  The "refreshing" of the summary data occurs each time you click the "Add to Workout Log" button on the "Data Entry" tab.  You could do a manual refresh if you're familiar with pivot tables. Let me know if that helps.

FYI - I plan on putting mine on google docs. It's fairly easy and accessible from anywhere.
  • This sounds great thanks David
  • This sounds great thanks David
  • @lance: how do you transfer it?
  • I haven't don't it yet as it's still on my desk top at work. Typically I just go to google docs and upload the file to it under my google docs?
  • Dl Is there a way to add interval detail?
  • Great work David. Thanks for the effort.
  • Great work David, this thing is very easy to update and looks like it has everything anybody could want. I couldn't see to get the final tab working with the graphs, but I wasn't sure if that was because I only have a weeks worth of data or if I messed up the pivot table somehow. I'll add my last few months worth of workouts if I get some free time at work today and see how that goes. I'm assuming I can just get my columns similar and copy/paste into your data tab.

@Ray, I put my interval stuff into the notes section as a comment.
  • ALL, I have uploaded the BETA (Dec 2013) file to the EN Wiki under Download here: http://bit.ly/J7IQwz Please keep the feedback going...

    Patrick,

I emailed you the more updated version of the spreadsheet (v.1.02).  It should be in your inbox - lmk if for some reason you didn't get it.  Thanks!

  • I trie importing into google docs. It did not work. Says it is not a true xls. Suggestions. Thanks.

David - this document is saved as an .xlms spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel Macro-Enabled Worksheet).  I did a quick search on whether or not you can upload this type of spreadsheet to Google Docs and it does not look like you can.  But...I'm not very familiar with Google Docs - there may be a work around that I'm unaware of.
