@Antonia, get him to go to his doctor and get a sleep study. Getting my snoring corrected was life changing for both my wife and me. I wish I'd done it sooner!
@Bryan, that is not a bad idea at all. I think I will suggest that to him. He even says that the nights I complain about his snoring, are the times he feels he gets the poorest sleep. @Jenniferlyn, Very interesting discovery. I go to bed and wake up at almost the exact same time every night. Wondering if on top of my hubbies snoring, the fact that I did my mile repeats at 3 pm yesterday -- which is late for me -- could be the culprit re: the broken sleep. The majority of the time I sleep really well...minus the snore nights (that I hear.)
Antonia, I'm glad you're thinking about it. Just do it. I'm telling you... Life changing!, for both of you. If you need more encouragement, do a google search and check out the health side effects of sleep apnea. Not pretty.
During my 40 years as a physician, I have come to understand that sleep is just as critical to our well-being, and even continued existence, as oxygen, water, and food. Deprive us of any of those things, and eventually we'll die. We can probably go longer without food than we can sleep. Diminish our intake, and bad things will happen. E.g., in my specialty of OB, it seems that post-partum depression is probably caused by the chronic disrupted sleep and sleep deprivation new moms experience.
Take home: pay at least as much attention to your strategy for getting adequate sleep as you do to getting proper nutrition.
That's an interesting article, Al. I think it explains while I'm so exhausted these past few days even though I'm getting about the same amount of sleep as usual: more stressful work than usual = more waste accumulating in the brain = more time the janitors need to clear it all out = I need more sleep when life fires at me from all directions!
My hubby and I both were asleep by 10 pm last night, slept soundly, and both woke naturally at 6 am. PERFECT! Now if 7 days a week could be strung together like that, right?
Great article Al. The knowledge you share is always great. I got 9.5 hours of sleep last night and I can feel the difference. Not in the challenge but thought I would share.
I'm trying to get 8 and would love more but when I get home late, do my WKO and I'm not ready to "chill" until 8:30, its hard to hit the hay much early than 10 and still keep some SAUs/DAUs (Dog approval units). Plus, having just 1.5hrs of family/downtime is lame!
My commute is pissing me off lately. If only I could hire a driver and nap to anf from during the 62mile commute each way.....

My sympathies ... I did something like that for 7 years, 50 miles, over an hour each way. But I didn't start doing triathlons until *after* I left that job. The only way I could make it work was (a) spending one night a week in a hotel a few blocks from work and (b) spending Fridays at a more local office, so I didn't have to face the Friday PM traffic which could last 2+ hours.
another random observation. We're tracking quantity in this challenge, but how do you account for quality of the sleep you're getting? After finishing a major project at work on Thursday night, I slept late on Friday, but was restless and not exactly fresh when I work up on Friday. Last night, I got 7 /3/4 hours of sleep, but was tossing and turning and had weird dreams. I attribute that to the fact that I had a caffeinated soda at lunch, which I normally never do, but I definitely felt it. So, the sleep quantity was right on par, but the quality definitely sub-par. Looking forward to a peaceful nap this afternoon!
Yeah BABY! Out of town for work and turned in at the hotel before 8. Got up once to pee then back in bed til 8:15. I can't remember the last time I slept 12 hours. And I didn't feel groggy in the AM. being away from home where the yippie dog wakes me a 5-6 AM probably helped some.
So far this challenge has been really great for getting me to realise that I really wasn't getting enough sleep. But now that I am more aware, I've been working to develop strategies that really seem to help, and I'm getting more consistent nights of 7-8 hours of sleep. The biggest things for me are no TV or Netflix before bed, I usually read the last 1-1.5 hour of the evening, I eat an apple one hour before going to sleep (I was always waking up from hunger around 3-4am), and I take several deep breath before going to sleep and focus on my breathing (like you would while meditating) while lying in bed. I usually fall asleep super quickly and don't wake up until the morning with a solid 7 to 8 hours of rest. I feel so much better!
Now if I could only get rid of the bags under my eyes! No matter how much sleep I get, I always seem to LOOK tired. Weird.
Thanks B for putting this challenge together. Many good lessons learned on my part.
Hands down, victory is mine! Not something to be proud of, but I've averaged 14.2 hours of daily sleep since January 5, the day of my surgery. 30 minute walk? it's got to be followed by a 2 1/2 hour nap!!! Not exactly the lifestyle I was accustomed to before my surgery and following infection, but in truth all this sleep has helped me recover to a point where I'm now functional again.
This is the last day for this challenge and I KILLED it last night. Not a binge makeup. I was truly tired and my wifey let me sleep in today. She is definitely my favorite wife.
Thanks for organizing this, Brenda. One thing I learned is I am a pretty consistent sleeper and I get plenty.
Now onward to Ironman Texas. 16 weeks of EN IM Plan love starts tomorrow!
I learned that with focus I can get in the proper "amount" of sleep. But I still have a long ways to go to make it "quality" sleep. The more I focus on that, the worse it seems to get. I got a fitbit and realized how bad it actually is. Now off to experiment to get the "quality" part right.

Keep up the good work everyone!
I like the Fitbit. My "restless" time is minimal. But it the unit isn't perfect.
I am not sure how I make "quality" sleep possible. Because I am asleep. :-) Only way to truly know is to hook up at a sleep clinic, I guess.
Drat, I wish I had this app during the Sleep Challenge... It's called Sleep Cycle. U basically put your iPhone under your pillow(under the mattress pad) and it tells u what state of sleep you're in based on your movement with pretty little charts. It's only $.99 so a lot cheaper than a FitBit!

This is a tough week for me and the sleep challenge. Early starts for work and a ton to do around the house. Only 6 hours last night.
Neat summary by NY Times science writer on recent research into the value of sleep, and effects of missed sleep:

Crushing it!

A nice article on sleep here in today's NYT: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/01/1...;referrer=
The "Sleep Challenge" has been a "challenge" this week.
Off to warmer climes tomorrow, so good opportunity to get the sleep challenge back on track!!
Sleep well everyone!!
I love to sleep.

Stark out!

One more night to go. It is very clear - I need to get more sleep!! No wonder I feel tired most days!
Time to break some old habits, and develop new ones.
Thanks for a very enlightening challenge Brenda.
Sleep well everyone.
