Tri Kit Arrived!

So I was super excited when my tri kit arrived today!  Wasn't sure how it would fit and it went as expected...  The women's XL fit but was way too short for my liking.  Squeezing into a tri kit is scary enough for me without showing anything extra!  (I'm 5'6", about 150lbs and a size 8/10 in case anyone is looking to order and wondering about fit)  I also ordered the women's XL shorts which were a hair too big but OK.  The issue with the shorts were that, well, they are a wee bit see-thru. Anyone else have this issue?

I already have a tri top so I'll be returning the new kit.  Bummer.  image

  • Thank you for the review Kim...I have been waffling on the kit, but I am hesitant that if the top was too short for you at 5'6", I am not sure I should order it-- I am 5'8" and I definitely do not want to wear a too-short shirt.  What do you think?
  • Same here - the shorts (a Medium) fit okay, but they are definitely see-thru. I probably should have ordered a size L top, too. Or lose 10#.

  • Susan- the tri top I have now is a men's XL and that is much longer, and bigger of course, but I like it big. I could prob get away w a large men's. only prob is the arm holes are huge!

Dawn-lol, I hear ya on the 10 lbs, but that wouldn't help the length of the shirt. I think I'm a little longer in the torso which doesn't help either.
  • I'm thinking of starting a tri/bike clothing line that actually fits like it's supposed to - true to size. From a guy that always has similar problems, I'm sick of ordering my natural size (XL or XXL) to only have it come in and fit likes its a size small.  Not even close to a true XL fit.  It's extremely frustrating!
  • Folks, I have notified coach Rich about the shorts...stay tuned....
  • So tell me about this sizing thing... I am normally a Medium in every day people closes. But tri stuff is impossible to fit because i have medium to XL in sizing for clothes. I am currently 161 Lbs and 5' 8.5"..... i tend to have a little belly (for a triathlete).... Thoughts
  • Got my shorts yesterday. I ordered a MED and they fit perfect! So comfortable! With that being said, they are a bit see-through...but they are lined in white, so that is prob what we are "seeing". Was hoping for them to be a bit more red in color whrn on...look a bit light in color.

I have one of the tri tops from a couple years ago. I am a MED in everything in life...except this top. I almost suffocated in it, so I ordered a LG and it is a bit loose, but I feel much more comfortable in it.

***It is a very short top, esp for women who rock some hips! image So I took it to a local seamstress and brought along an old white running shirt. I had them cut off the bottom 2 inches of the shirt with full hem and had them sew it to the tri top thus extending the length by 2 inches. PERFECT! It covers the lower back beter while on the bike, and is better during the run too. Race belt helps to hold it is place and does not ride up.****
  • Pic of top with added length...hope this works!
  • Great idea Annie!! I actually had my Mom sew some grippy stuff into the bottom of mine to keep it from riding up.
  • Got my Tri kit!  Fits fine.  Med shorts and large top.  I'm 5'10, 169#, with 33.5" waist and 41" chest.  My wife and son insist they are more orange than red.  Definitely thin material, which should be good when its hot.  Love the long zipper and location of the pockets.

  • @Annie - Where did you take the top to be altered? Would you mind sending me a DM? I like that idea, and it looks great, thanks!
  • Got my kit today ... Looks great and fits great, but will look better when I am at race weight. Doewsn't look see through but I will wear the shorts in the shower when I get back from my run and give a report.
  • Got my shorts today...Fit is great but the color is way off.  Much too orange vs my 2 EN tri tops that I already have.  So I won't be able to wear them in a race as the kit has to match, right?  Oh well,  looks like the new shorts will used during training only.
  • My assessment…
    • Cycling jersey - sleeves are longer than before, and tighter. To the point its a bit uncomfortable, especially with arm warmers. But the sleeves do cover the tops of arm warmers, which was a problem with the previous design. The fabric is just slightly thinner, maybe will be a benefit on warmer days.
    • Tri top - big change here. It is about an inch shorter, and also tighter around the torso, with pockets on the side, not back. All in all, should be more aero, but if not worn with bib shorts, then there is a very real risk of sun burn on exposed skin between top and shorts. All the more reason to not wear tri shorts when racing, go with a bib with leg which reach the knees. The color is indeed more orange than the cycling jersey, or the previous tri top. But I like it, as it goes with my nearly neon orange Kinvara shoes and compression calf sleeves. Ought to be real easy to spot during a crowded race. The top is tight enough around the shoulders to consider swimming with it alone in a non-wetsuit race.

As I said my mediums fit SNUG, and I am 5'9.5", 148", 6 BF%. If you have any bulk at all up top , get a large; if you are taller than 5'10", consider an XL?

  • Shorts passed the shower test...verified by the mirror, and more importantly, my wife. image I think this outfit is Sierra Hotel!! I ordered a small top and shorts because this stuff is SUPPOSED to fit tight, and I weigh more than Al. Seems like plenty of overlap too, but I have a short torso. Most people underestimate how tight a proper fit is. And I agree with Al that this kit will probably be more aero than the previous one. .
  • I'm 5'10", 145 lbs and got a small try shorts and small try top. Shorts fit great. Tri top just fits, but doesn't restrict my chest when breathing. Its just a little too short, as I reach my arms up, it pulls up to around my belly button. Not a big deal but like Al said, don't want to get a sun burn of the lower abs. Just a little worried that if I swim with the top without a wetsuit it will cause a lot of drag. Possbly have to go topless at FL70.3 in 2 weeks.

  • Took the shorts on a tiny little 5 hour trainer ride today image and...loved them!!!! Oh my gosh...most comfy shorts ever!! Best fit ever!

They def look orange and not red. They would have looked awesome in black...
  • Hi All! Planning to order my tri top TODAY!! (tomorrow is the deadline for the next round!). SO I took my measurements and OF COURSE my measurements do not fit in one bracket. I am in between a medium and large.....What are the suggestions to do when that happens? Any ladies out there have any experience with this?  I am currently 136 lb (however my hope is that this will not be my race weight as I am working on body comp) and 5'4.  ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Pic of top with added length...hope this works!

Annie, did you do this with this years top or last years? I believe I've seen something similar from you in the past so just want to make sure we're talking about '14 kit vs '13. Thanks.

  • Tri Top fit and length -- these tops are more aero and racey-racey than the previous version. When I tried on the top it fit (snug and length) about how I'd expect a tri top to fit.

Short length -- feedback? Shorts have historically been a VERY tough item for us to satisfy people with and I was frankly expecting some pushback on the length of the shorts. The shorts are compressive and nearly bike short length, as my experience is that this is often the preferred setup for long course athletes.

Transparency of the shorts -- some are saying yes, some saying no, some were checking. Can you guys give me your feedback on this issue?

  • My 2 cents as I just received the Bike Jersey - it's not even close to fitting in the size I ordered (same size that I normally wear in similar bike jersey's).  So much so that I'm just going to return it as I don't think the next size will be any better.

I'm a clyde and I would expect this from a TRI top (thus the reason I don't order Tri Top), but the shortness of the bike jersey is awful if you want my honest opinion.

Yes, tough to satisfy 700 people in a club so I'm not really bitching, just giving some feedback.

  • Rich- I expected the women's tri top to fit a bit like that but I was still hopeful that it might be longer than last year's. A lot of brands seem to be moving towards longer women's tri tops because yanking on a shirt while biking and running wastes valuable energy. image
  • The tri kit is the same color as a pair of Hooters orange shorts that I own!  Compared to my red Peloton-Specialized kit, these are not even close to being red!

I ordered the medium tri top and it's too tight.  Anyone have a size Large tri top they want to exchange for my medium top?  Still has tags.  Or does anyone know if we can return and exchange sizes?  I will need to lose about 10# (common number) to fit into the size M top.

Let me know if someone wants to trade!

    Later,

  • The tri shorts are "definitely" transparent, especially when it's time to be in aero position. It's a non-issue during the run. The shorts also seem to be a bit lighter in color when paired with the cycling jersey. I'm thinking of pairing them that way for IMTX to address the transparency issue, but I'm concerned about the drag it will create during the swim. The material feels great. The jersey material is a bit on the lighter side, so I need to make sure I apply sunblock on my back as to not burn. I'm 5'4- 124 lbs. I ordered a small tri short, which I'm happy about. I went with a medium top, although I'm small up top & it fits ok. I agree that it's a little tight (more aero) around the torso area.
  • Perhaps we should have folks post pics modelling their transluscent shorts.

    Not it!

  • Hmmm, not really seeing that the shorts are translucent. Kit fits and looks great!

Perhaps we should have folks post pics modelling their transluscent shorts.

Yeah, I can do that.  But first they need to be washed to ensure the red doesn't bleed all over everything else.  That's the one thing I hate about red.   And these are definitely a bright red.  I don't see how anyone sees orange in them.  They aren't dark, blood red, just a bright middle of the road red.  Stand next to a Hooters girl and compare colors if you think I'm wrong.   Or compare to Harley Davidson orange.   This is RED.

  • Ordered my top!! SUPER excited!! Says that orders should be in mid-may...Really hope I get it and am able to try it out before Quassy!!

  • GEAR FOLKS -- HOMEWORK FOR YOU.

RnP are waiting on our gear, but we'd love to see your issues. Not the transparent ones, but the colors. The red of the new kit should be (A) same color top and bottom and (B) same red as last year. Can we get some pictures of the top and bottoms togeher for comparison...and of this year's kit next to last years?

Also, more detail on transparency would be nice. You mention it's only in the aero position...do you mean the chamois or right adjacent to it? How would you know in aero? As in, how can Mark find out if it is see thru in aero if he's the one riding, etc...

Any info here appreciated. We are committed to making this right...
  • Color observations: there's no question that to the naked eye, this year's tri top has a bit more orange flavor to it, compared to this year's cycling jersey, and any of last year's kit. My wife, who, as a photographer, has a good eye for color and light, confirms this. But I can't get it to be at all noticeable in photos; not even using her professional Nikon.

Maybe it has something to do with the thinness of the fabric compared to the others? Last year's tri top is the darkest, but maybe multiple washings have an effect? Below, last year's tri top and jersey on left, this year top and jersey on right.
