Will Perform be gone next year from the Course?

OK, because someone brought up the whole thing about Perform being gone from the course, I have decided to start a thread.

So what will replace it?  Any speculations?  What the heck should i train with now????

  • Don't know.    looking forward to hearing though.
  • I mentioned this somewhere else, but had the pleasure of sitting next to IMMT race winner TJ Tollakson on my flight to Chicago after the race. He's a Powerbar sponsored athlete and he said Perform will be gone. It has been a disaster for Powerbar and one of the reasons the Nestle sold them. He didn't know what would replace it, but would not count on Perform - Think you will probably see Red Bull as one choice..... Will also tell you that when I volunteered at IM Boulder - they had the Orange/Mango flavor and I couldn't even give cold bottles of it away on a 90 degree day - so many people said it makes them sick.....
  • Red Bull as possible replacement?      Not the same category of fluid.   I am scared now.
  • I'll bet Gatorade Endurance. Pepsi will put up the $$ that the WTC will demand!!!
  • was joking about Red Bull replacing Perform. But I'm worried that RB will pay to be the "cola" for IM, replacing generic (and thus non-revenue producing) cola. That would be an even bigger disaster for me as a racer than the Perform was when it replaced Gatorade Endurance (which was good stuff, all things considered. RB has 6X the amount of caffiene ... bad for this non-coffee drinker.
  • There are only so many mass producers of endurance sports drinks. WTC going back to Gatorade Endurance is the most obvious choice. Everyone knows Gatorade and PepsiCo is obviously a ginormous company that could have a longterm relationship with WTC.

    What are the other choices?

    - Accelerade tastes better than both Perform and Gatorade Endurance but has too much protein (8g per 20 oz.)
    - Either of the Hammer Products (Heed or Perpetuem) have a very short course "half-life" and spoil easily. They both also taste like swamp ass.
    - Gu Brew or Gu Roctane Endurance Drink
    - EFS but I think they're too small a company.

My guess is Gatorade Endurance. Second best guess is one of the Gu drinks.
  • I liked the Perform better than Gatorade Performance.      But recently the Perform not being tolerated as well.       So maybe the gut would welcome it back.
  • Please God NO HAMMER!!!!! I will do anything other than Hammer.

  • NA Sports was not perfect either but you could always count in flat coke and chicken broth in the late miles in the run.

That said, at my last race I went self sufficient. I trained heavily with infinit, so I had a concentrated bottle of it on my bike. It was essentially 4 servings in twenty ounces. I would take water at the aid station, squirt 1/4 of my concentrate in my sippy cup and then add water to dilute it properly. On the run I had a fuel belt that was normal infinit, and ready to go refills at special needs. Take water from the aid station but drink your own mix off your belt. That strategy will insulate you from becoming a guinea pig in Ironmans sponsor of the month club!
  • Would be interesting to see what they will provide. Have never been a big fan of the on-course Perform. I don't mind the Perform powder I use at home for training, but the on-course stuff just does not taste anything like it.

  • Yoo Hoo!
    image
    180mg sodium
    140mg potassium
    29g carbs
    2g protein
  • Mike S, good idea with self-sufficient concentrate. As I switched to to Perform the last couple weeks to adapt, I've found myself weak and cramping late in the long workouts. Did a couple of centuries this summer on Gatorade Endurance that went great.
  • I moved away from Infinit a couple of years ago mainly due to the fact I struggled with not drinking enough water with the concentrated mix and was getting dehydrated. The move to Perform made sure I was drinking enough and it was simple and convenient to grab on course. The powdered Perform is also cheaper to buy than Infinit.
  • I'm hoping Gatorade. It was on IM courses for years (remember the Gatorade swims / bag checks at races?), you can but it any grocery store, gas station, etc. Doesn't even have to be Endurance. Just Gatorade. Proven, works, cheap, everywhere, done.
  • For shits and giggles....

Yoo-hoo would be an excellent fueling alternative if it weren't for the dairy component which would make it difficult to digest and would spoil more easily. Probably taste like hell warm.

Yoo-hoo vs Perform when extrapolated out to a 20oz. serving (like the Perform bottles):

    300 vs 175 cals

450 vs 475 mg of sodium

350 vs 25 mg of potassium

    67 vs 43 g of carbs

    5 vs 0 g of protein

Perform is mixed in an almost perfect 8% CHO/Osmolality solution which would mean the Yoo-hoo is way off. But chased with a bottle of water it would be diluted easily enough that it would absorb just fine. The dairy part makes it a non-starter, IMO.

I agree that it should be Gatorade.  My one and only issue with Gatorade and/or Gatorade Endurance is the calories.  Perform has about 30% more calories per 8oz serving.

That stated, Lime Cucumber flavored Gatorade is the greatest tasting sports drink in the history of the world.

  • I would prefer to stick w/ the Perform / Cola routine.....I have trained with it so long and made it work that, I would have a hard time converting......
  • Who owns Gatorade? Pepsi? Coke? Rather see a Gatorade + Cola combo, anything to keep Red Bull off the course. Years ago I tried RB a couple times while riding the IMLou course, just for fun. I didn't "not work" for me, just wasn't something I'd ever consider relying on in the last 8 miles of a 140 mile race.
  • Totally Agree with Rich.

Something that is available to anyone, anywhere, would be great.
Not something that I have to mail order.
Not something that is not available in premixed form until you have to taste it on race day.

Gatorade fits those requirements for me anyways.
  • Random thought...I wonder if a contract with Garorade would include a provision that all cola on the course must be Pepsi.
  • Regular gatorade doesn't have near enough sodium. Endurace has 2x as much.
I really like Perform powder -- hate to see it go.
  • +2 on the Gatorade Endurance + Pepsi combo.
  • AHHH, Pepsi and Gatorade would be amazing. The idea of RB instead of Cola just turns my belly thinking about it. Heck i had RB on friday for the first time in months. BLAH... keep in mind it was mixed with Vodka... but who's judging.
  • What would be awesome would be the Gatorade and OLD SCHOOL Pepsi-----I mean that way we are talking real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup........mmmmmmm SUGAR!!
  • Once the Perform runs out, time to stock up on Gatorade Endurance formula for all future training rides...........not too happy about that.
  • So the question I have is if we'll be able to buy RTD packaged Gatorade Endurance in a wide variety of retail outlets. My problem with Perform is that RTD sale to the general public was discontinued shortly after its introduction so "train how you race" was basically impossible.
  • I heard today (from Facebook so it must be true) that Gatorade was getting a 3 year contract. It is supposed to be a specific formula not just what you buy in a grocery store. I don't drink Gatorade in any form so I'm not sure whether this is good or bad, but I don't mind change so I'm open to trying it.
