Just Keep Swimming. Just Keep Swimming.

There was talk of doing this, so I thought I'd make a thread for all the NOS Swim Camp kids.

I'm looking forward to getting in to the pool and doing technique drills. It's been a while, and I think the mental break after test week will be nice.

  • @RB -- Thx for setting this up.

Got my swim in early this morning. Only 40' as I forgot my zoomers, but nice drill work. Could feel some stroke fatigue after 1,000yds but the fitness should come back soon.

Let's keep the NOS mojo train rolling thru swim camp!
  • Been swimming since October 2x a week with a masters club. I am a terrible swimmer and the only way to not get more terrible is by swimming in the OS. I will continue to swim on Fri and Sun and might add in a Tues night.
  • Today was my first swim since volunteering at IMLP..... lets just say "needs some work"

Weekly core and Cordz during the OS was very helpful. I put in 2200 yds and wasn't drowning near the end. Tired yes, but still better than in prior years where I felt like my arms would fall off after 1500.
  • Swam 1800m tonight. Feeling a bit of race fatigue from yesterday.
I think my swim golf got progressively worse image

  • Well showed up at the Y to swim this morning after dropping my son off at school. Found that the pool was closed! So no swim for me today. Instead did some PT exercises and the Eliptical for 15mins... (I'm still in run jail)

Anyway, I felt like I wanted to complain to folks who might understand. :-) Thanks for listening. I'll get my swim in tomorrow morning instead...

    Thanks!
    Erik
  • Erik, I feel your pain. On Friday my wife and I showed up at 5: 30 am at the pool. The local LA fitness pool has 3 lanes. All lanes were already doubled up. So we left because we didnt have time to wait around. Today when we show up, there is not a single person in there. So we're thinking this is great. Chlorine pump wasn't working. 2 minutes later back in the car going home.

  • Went to the gym for a meeting then a swim....the linger I was at the meeting the less motivated I was to swim. I decided it could be a rest day.
  • @ Erik and Jan:  I showed up this morning to a closed gym due to weather.(We had some substantial snowfall here in NW Indiana)  Apparently, I was the only one who didn't get the memo.

I've been swimming 3 x week in the OS also working on my form and speed with Masters.  Now if I can improve my endurance at my improved speed,  I'll achieve my goal time in my first half Ironman this June.

  • First swim in today. 1700yds rough yds.
My Swim Golf also got worse as I went so lots of form and fitness to get back in the coming weeks.
That said, I'm sure it will with time... I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've been in the pool in past 12 months!

    Thanks for starting the thread!
  • I'm with Brenda in the terrible swimmer club. I too have been swimming 2X a week since October. Started one swim a week with a coach and its been very helpful.
First day of swim camp............snowed out. I'll try again tomorrow.
  • Swam today too. Got to the Y pool a bit late and only had 45 minutes so I did not get to the 10x50 at the end.
Those drills require a lot of thinking for me. After not drowning in the touch and go drill, I felt pretty good.
Did the optional swims the last two weeks of OS, and was rewarded with this sunrise as I left the Y last Friday -

  • Hey all-

Concerning the 6 position drills- Which ones are they because when I look at the drills there are 10 of them:-(

    mandy

  • It's 10 steps, but six drills. Some of them repeat.
  • Good thread, glad this was started.  Did a few optional swims in the OS so yesterday's drill work wasn't too bad.  Surprisingly a little sore today.  I always hate going to the pool, but when its over it feels really good.  Got a long way to go to get into Rich's described "Good" swimmer club.  Best swim golf yesterday was 88, 39 strokes/49" (meters).

  • Hi All,
Got yesterday's swim in this morning. Felt good to swim again. Still working on understanding the different drills, I did my best on them today. My swim Golf scores seemed to go in the wrong direction, but that gives me something to work on... Have fun everyone!

    Thanks,
    Erik
  • Thanks for starting this thread Rachel! I hit the TM yesterday for a 50 minute run. I am taking today completely off and then diving into swim camp starting tomorrow. Keep up the great work everybody!
  • Yes! happy to talk swimming, I'm looking forward to it. I find it restorative for aches and pains, and great for my fitness level.

  • Up at 4:30, in the pool at 5:05. I put in 50 minutes and got it all done except the optional set at the end. I was starting to get ragged by then so I didn't want to practice bad habits. I lifted weights yesterday and I could feel it in my arms and shoulders especially at first. It got better as the session went on though. Overall it went well. The second golf set was better than the first and my stroke count across the sets were between 18 and 20 per 25. That's about where I land mostly unless I'm sprinting and then it goes into the low 20s.

Glad to see the team getting their work in. Keep it up.

  •   Monday's swim wko whipped me pretty good, but today was much better. Form and stroke count not bad, but swimming slow even for me. Have alot of work to do, but it's pretty amazing how fast the swim fitness comes back.
  • I did some of the OS optional swims in January and the form doesn't feel too bad, but there is no longevity in the arms. Anything over 2000m is a real bonus. It's a good thing my SwiMp3 still works - I know the music is a crutch, but it works well when you stare at the black line for 45 min! Good luck to all suffering in the pool!
  • Left the office at 10AM to go swim. Did well, 2600yds with an average pace of 1:45 overall. Also did a 1K TT and PRed it at 17:09.

Only downside was being loopy for most of the afternoon with jello-brain. Math problems were particularly difficult today......
  • Last night was tough. I don't consider myself to a great swimmer, but I wouldn't say that I'm terrible either. My golf score is sitting consistently at about 94. I didn't think I had terrible swim technique but maybe I do?
I'm hoping that I will have a mental bounce back on Friday night.
  • Yesterdays swim is in the books. Surprised with how sore my upper body was from Monday's session. Swim golf went from 88 before the drills to 86 after. Progress. Lets post those swim golf scores!
  • I too did the swim workout yesterday. 2500 yards total. The drills were easier Wednesday than Monday.
Best swim golf score was 95. Lots of work on my technique needed for sure.
  • Glad I'm not the only one who is rusty!

Pool closed Monday due to snowstorm. Biked Monday, ran Tues and FINALLY got to the pool yesterday for my first swim in 6 months. It felt like someone was holding my ankle as I flailed around in the water. I felt super slow! Did 1600 and called it a successful first day. Sore shoulders today and not surprised. Only have room for improvement, but I vaguely remember the same feeling last year at this time. It took 4-6 weeks to shake off the cobwebs.

  • I had a good swim yesterday. I swim in a 25yd pool.
For 50 yards, I had a best score of 76 and I averaged 88 for the entire session, which includes drills, so that probably inflated it some.
On the progression, I started at 86 and ended at 84.
I feel like I'm getting my stroke back
  • Didn't have a very good run this morning. After various minor injuries, I have discovered my R leg is 1/4 inch shorter than the L. The lift I selected for my running shoe didn't feel right and my L knee felt the difference so I elected to continue on the Elliptical . I've been swimming all OS with Masters 3 x week. My golf score is 84. I love to swim.
  • Did yesterday's swim today due to scheduling reasons... Had a good swim... I need to bring a pencil or something to record my Swim Golf score on,i f I remember correctly it's in the high 80's, low 90's... Clearly a lot of work to do. Still working to understand and implement the drills correctly...

    Erik
  • Haven't posted the last 2 weeks; barely having time to get the WKOs in (but I am...). Monday's swim, even though I'd been doing the OS swims, showed me where my technique was lacking (via pain). Wednesday went quite a bit better, even though I had to dodge the people swimming vertically (actually diagonally, but close!) that morning. I've done the optional sets both days, and I can already feel the distance fitness coming back. Now I just have to get the technique working. Speed is about where it was mid-season last year, so I feel pretty good going forward!
  • I did yesterday's swim today and this time I did the optional stuff too! My golf score was 92 and 93 at the start and down to 88 and 89 for the last two. It's progress. 2,300 yards total. I'm not sure if I'm going to swim tomorrow or just double up with a swim and a bike on Saturday.
