2015 JOS Week 12 Bike Thread

Welcome to Week 12!  Hopefully my fellow East-Coasters will be able to get outside soon??  (Does everyone else watch the weather as obsessively as I do?)

Remember, when you do get out onto the open road, your power numbers will likely vary vs. inside, typically higher so keep that in mind when doing your intervals.

Fingers crossed for first outdoor ride soon!

  • I took a personal day yesterday. Tomorrow is a crap shoot due to work. So, doing big work today, Wed, Thurs, Sat, Sun.

    12'(4')20'(4')12' @ .98, .98. 1.0

very happy with where the legs are lately.

Race purposes aside, puts me in a good place for when the backyard slugfests start any weekend now. Still laying a bit low to finish up the OS. But, after the OS and with no big A race this year, all bets are off. These are, basically, what I'm training for. The 2-3 oly's and a late season independent half iron are icing on the cake.
  • The rain is back here in the PNW, so will continue to keep plugging away on the trainer. Saturday's effort was a bust, so looking to get back on track this week, and strangely enough, looking forward to the last OS power test ~ first year with power, and looking through strava I've seen a steady incline in ability. Keep on nugging all..I look to these threads for motivation!
  • Got up a little earlier today. Abbreviated w/u followed MS as written 10'z4(4'),15'z4(4'),10'z4. hit all my goals 1.01/1.01/1.02
  • Nice job Robert.

I need some team mojo.  I got up this morning at 4:45 fought with myself for a couple minutes then got up, changed, and stretched.  I even made it down stairs on to my bike and started the warm up then pulled the plug for extra rest.  Slept for another hour or so then off to work.  My problem is now I have to do the workout after work, its 12:30 and I feel quite tired.

The plan is to get home, help with supper then catch a quick nap if possible before an workout around 7-7:30.  This will be followed up with shower, rolling/stretching in front of the TV with my wife then off to bed early.  Tough start to week 12.

  • I really surprised myself this morning. 10 15 10 @ FTP was the plan but I was nto feeling great out of bed Ive been sick work, blah blah blah. My head was working on me before I got on the bike.
Got the first 10min interval done no problem. By the 5min mark of the 15min interval I had already mentally capitulated to do 3x10. Just didnt have 15min in me. Got to 10min and decided to just shoot for 11. then 12 then 13 then 14 then it was done. Fought my head all the way though the next 10min interval as well. But I did it.
This is my first out season and on a few occasions on the bike I have been really amazed at what I could maintain. It is like the "suck" grows from min 1 to 5 but then it levels off from there.
Anyway total ride time was 1:20 and I got a little Z3 at the end. My OS is set to wrap up 2 weeks before my first HIM of the season. Curious how prepared I will be.
  • Since my last FTP test was a big fat fail, I decided to retest tonight for "fun". I did this for a few reasons 1) no increase on the last test so I've been using a swag 2) I'm very rested right now as my last bike wko was thurs and it was light due to 2 5ks this weekend. 3) I wanted to have one more indoor trainer test as my next one will likely be outside.

My swag was pretty much spot on. I've been working with an FTP of 177 and I tested at 176. I feel better that I earned that FTP vs the swag. Its a 7 watt or 4% increase vs. my first test (and my second as well). Not as much as I've seen in past OS but it is my highest tested indoor FTP ever so hopefully I'll grab a few more watts once I get outside..
  • After the fatigue of last week, my legs are back (golf clap)

    1X12 1X20 1X12 -- I finally beat the gorilla. .94 IF
  • Pretty good ride this morning.  12/20/12 at .98, 1.02, 1.06.  I consider this a huge success since Saturday's ride required triage.

  • 65' bike this morning. Can't remember why I didn't go the full 80'. Trainer Road ended and so did I. Time allowing, I'll add the 15' to Thursday's bike.

    10' - 12' - 8' @ 1.029, 1.033 & 1.029

The first two sets went smooth and quick. Time seemed to be going backwards on the last one though.
  • Kim-congrats on the FTP test!

I had to ride in the PM, not my favorite time, but got it done, and finished with a flurry:
    10'@.99, 15'@.97, 10@1.03, 10'@.84
  • No ride for me...major bike issues requiring a trip to the LBS and then major tech issues with my kickr on Tuesday. Then yesterday I THOUGHT I had the solution, had enough time to ride before an appointment, and TR would not even open for me. I was PISSED. So I jumped into my run things I had laid out for the brick and ran hard for 4 miles. UGH.

Fingers crossed I can get the tech crap solved today.

Nice job testing Kim and to everyone doing the tough Tuesday ride!
  • Thursday VO2 done and I finally consistently hit the mark:
    4x 5': 1.1, 1.14, 1.1, 1.12.
    Felt really good
(And Nancy Botwin in Weeds really stirred up some trouble for herself!)
I will get the brick in tonite!
  • Third time's a charm. Finally got in a ride! It kicked my butt though. 1.06, 1.07, 1.04, 1.03. Not stellar. But in the tempo portion my HR was up about 8 beats and my power was down at .82. Time to brick. image
  • Checking in after a long absence to say hi! Finally lifting my head out from under a major joint/combined exercise at work and able to get my focus back into the game. Based on my season/TSR, I'm pulling out of the OS and jumping into the Get Faster plan this week. I still read these threads for mojo and accountability. I'll be posting to keep myself real until you guys hit testing week. I just transitioned to the tri-bike so my numbers aren't quite as sexy and I'm tweaking the position as I get used to being low, but its all good.

Strong work and good mojo from all. You guys are great image
  • Great work Roy and best of luck with the rest of your season
  • @ Roy- Go get 'em!

Today's bike went well. No narrative needed.
5x 5' (3') all at, or really close to, 1.1 IF

Followed that up with some hill repeats (run). Tough route and I think the Hill Brick wore me out. AT & calf still safe. Earned my Friday legs off day.
  • Roy- Glad you'll be hangin around a bit longer but good luck w/ GF plan!

Chris- Fantastic! Hittin' 1.10IF ain't a cake walk (MMmmmm , cake)

    I got as close to 1.10IF as I could. Not bad....4 x 5' @ 1.07, 1.075, 1.09 & 1.08IF

Skipped the run as my calves were feeling crampy and tight. I've been getting foot cramps at night after biking or running so I think my hydration might need some work...
  • Kim - I hear you about the calves. I have a confession to make. My calves were so sore this am that I went to the pool this am instead of the VO2 work on the bike today. They feel a little better now but still planning to swim again tomorrow. Hopefully back on the bike Sat and run Sunday.
  • 60 miles today. Was not happy at all with the comfort on the tri-bike. Turned the stem upside down immediately upon getting home (to raise the front end). Was getting serious hip discomfort. Bottom line: All normal during the transition period. A bad ride is better than the best day without a ride image

    Keep after it everyone.
  • got to spend 2:30 outside today. Still getting over cough / bug and not really feeling powerful but enjoyed having to work to keep a bike upright again. 4 months on the trainer and I forget what wind and cars are like.
  • Stuck to the trainer for today. Pretty cold and very windy around here. Nothing that compares to our EN'ers up north. But, bad enough that it wouldn't have been fun.

So, I just hit the cave and knocked out the work. Plenty of work. Enough that it cooked me for the brick run. So, I know I did my part.

    90'
    2x 20'(4') and 1x 10' at .98, .99, and 1.0.
    then, 12' zn3 stuff.

I didn't take the time to make my homemade brew. So, I used a bottle of coconut water, added a scoop of CarboPro (which I hadn't used since my GI collapse at IMWI in '13), added 1/2 tsp of sea salt.

Worked great for the bike session where I sipped every 5'.

But, chose to leave it in the house when I went outside for what was supposed to be a 45' brick run.

Bonked after 2 miles. This drink was very different than what I've been training with over the last several months. I tend to believe that once I stopped sipping on the high glucose drink, it was only a short matter of time before I crashed.

I'll get back to my regular routine and see if I'm right.
  • 50 mile group ride with local team. 1st time out on the road in months. Of course the battery on the left pod of my Garmin Vector was essentially dead before I left. According to the post ride analysis my left-right balance favored my right 95%-5% kind of comical. The overall power file was a joke. While riding side by side at the front of the pack my output was 100w less than the cyclist next to me (and I both outweigh him and was riding a less aerodynamic hike than his P5) Definitely need to change batteries and re-calibrate. Not sure how the 920 recovery advisor makes its calculations but I am supposed to wait 42 hours before working out again - LMAO
  • Chilly 45 miles with some climbing for me today. Legs felt fatigued but HR looked good. Ended up with 169 NP .91 IF just at 3 w/k (out season goal is 3.5)

Cool part is I got to ride with some of the strongest female cyclists in my city. Mostly crit racers. I'm the lone triathlete on my road bike. We did a few drills where I would take off in an attack and they would give me a good min to get ahead and work together to catch me. What I thought would be threshold blocks turned into Vo2 blocks quickly. It was great to ride with them although I was left in the dust on hills and sprints. Most are clearly 3.5+ w/k. I'll keep working at it...
  • @ Robert, the recovery advisor in my 620 is likewise hilarious. I would only work out twice a week since every workout calls for a 72 hour recovery!!!!
  • Despite living in a gorgeous climate for riding outside, I stuck to the trainer to get the specific who done. Thats been my MO during OS every year:
    2x 20' at 1.01, .97. 25' at .81
I gave it my all the first 20' then felt a little saggy for the rest of the ride.

Did the Brick immediately after, outside.
  • @Gordon if ya look around a lot of us are feeling a bit cooked...its the natural additive effects of all the high intensity and the addition of volume that some of us are taking on ..... the other athletes may have already been taking a few "early outs" (especially us older ones image ). Sometimes I've found even with a full FRI off SAT WKO just lacks gas. Sometimes its lack of good glycogen replenishment ...or dehydration ...or sleep or just needing a little more time. Only you will know and be willing to modify or even drop a planned WKO.
Personally If I punch out of a WKO early I feel less annoyed now than in the past ...and less than if I detonate and waste myself for the next few WKOs.
a li'll recharge of some extra sleep and rest in the body can make for improved follow on WKOs and mindset/motivation.
  • Despite a truly gorgeous day in San Antonio, I was forced to the trainer tonight (two soccer games, leaves too high to continue to ignore in the yard) for the 90'.  Due to a terrible work week, this was my first ride since last weekend.  Best 2x20' I think I've ever had (likely due to aforementioned rest! ), both at 1.01 and not nearly as difficult as usual.  Then did 30' at 0.86.  Can't wait until soccer season ends!  Wish I didn't have to work for a living too....

  • On less than 4 hours sleep (why I don't know...went to bed but could NOT fall asleep) I managed to make it to my local saturday bike shop ride with my peeps and EN sister from another mister Cathleen. I must have had an argument of the pros and cons of getting out of bed for at least 10 minutes!!! I arrived whipped and exhausted, and confessed to Cath I had no idea how I'd manage a 2x20 wo. Well, I didn't really hit the numbers ( s not surprised as I haven't since testing...the "numbers" being the ones I HAVE been hitting on these saturday bikes) but I was giving it my all and my hr was definitely up where it usually is for this effort. Once again I'm amazed at what the body can do under adult peer pressure! No way would this have been a decent bit of TH work left to my own devices (and wimpy mindset) on my own. Ended up riding a total of 2 hours and 39 miles on the IMFL course. Skipped the brick as I'm running a half today for my long run. Running, not racing! image
  • 45 miles in 3 hours on a windy Sunday exploring the west side of the island. Raised cockpit and tweaked saddle gave me an entirely different bike, one that was much more pleasant on my nethers and shoulders. Unfortunately, the garmin file was corrupt, so I guess my ride didn't happen image

    Keep on it everyone!
  • @ Robert - I get really frustrated with my reliance on the tech now. It could be something as simple as dropping wifi in the basement and having my Pandora pause. My latest tech prob is that I'm having trouble with a driver in WKO+ that keeps me from downloading my stuff. Though I still have GarminConnect AND Strava AND TrainingPeaks, it drives me NUTS. Also, if my 310xt shifts at all when charging, I might lose charge early in the next day's ride. I tell myself to that we're just going old school and I'll use RPE but it's in my head the whole time. #firstworldproblems

@ Emily - you've got it good. that type of training with such competitive peers will do nothing but make you faster. FUN way to do it.

@ Matt & @ Robert - Im surprised that Garmin has that set up like that. I would think that they would know their target pop better. If someone is dropping that kind of $$ on a top of the line tool that is used for getting an edge on the competition, then they probably are fit enough to work out on back to back days. Orrrrrr....maybe they have it right and we need to rest up 4 out of the 7 days of the week to get stronger, while we live in depleted state compared to their athletes that listen to the vectors. Nah, I can't buy that.

@ David & @ Gordon - Agee that the most important thing we is to consistently show up. Even if it's abbreviated workouts. Of course, if a total break is called for, that's different. But, overall consistency will win out over the course of weeks, months, seasons, years.

@ Jeff - Life on life's terms, right? Our training does take a backseat to fam and work. Priorities.

@ Trish - nice job on getting it done. bet that ride was windy.

@ Roy - would you be Wildcat or a Cardinal?
