Roll Call for Blue Ridge Parkway Camp (Attendees added by Coach P!)
As a founding member of this camp, this will be year 5, it seems like a good time to start asking questions, sharing tips, etc.
I'll start.
1. If you have a road bike, bring it. There is some seriously steep and technical stuff here. You do not necessarily have to ride it, but you will be much more comfortable on a roadie, vs a tri bike. If you don't have a road bike, then bring what you have.
2. Bring plenty of gears. Compact and 27 or 28 cassette will be your friend.
3. Day 1 brings lots of adrenaline, contain yourself. Riding over a .7IF day 1 will lead to a lot of suffering by day 3,4.
4. Hydrate and eat like your life depends on it.
5. Bring clothing to fit spring in the mountains. Could be 40's to 80's. We've historically lucked out on rain, but be prepared.
I'll let the other vets chime in here. Looking forward to another awesome camp in the mountains. I've got a couple new micro breweries lined up for us to visit post ride.

Looking forward to my third BRP adventure. I'm eagerly awaiting the final deets of what Anne has planned for us. I know the routes we'll ride will be awesome again. The second year with more gears was more fun. Can't wait
Looking forward to it!.
I'm out this year, but I'd like to challenge your assertion that we've 'lucked out on rain' as I recall a certain ride in 2013 in which I was dodging lightning bolts while being pelted at 30MPH by needle like raindrops and limited stopping ability on a set of carbon rims.
Have fun...and pour out some beer for the homeys that can't make it.
Also..watch out for P in the hot tub as he can get a little handsy after a few cool ones.
Is anyone leaving from the DC area? If so, and you want to catch a ride, let me know.
I'm in for my first BRC. Looking forward to it. Trying to round up a road bike now to bring with me. If I were about 4" shorter, I'd have ZERO problems finding a nice used one.
Blue Ridge Camp attendees might consider linking their Strava to the Competitive cyclist site. Competitive Cyclist will give you a dollar off for every hour that you log riding and camp should be good for a couple of bucks. Just thinking out of the box here...

Also, I need more time on it and what the heck, this is supposed to be fun!
Dave, it's gonna be awfu/awesome again isn't it???? And don't for get a new skirt this year...you don't want to be rocking' last years fashions fella!
Yep, gonna be awesome again this year Trish!! Hoping Anne has the fashion side covered again this year. Never know when you'll need to get under a skirt....
Coach P - this link doesn't work for me... takes me to the Medical Tent!
- Tubes
- Tires
- Chain?
- ???
Thanks!
Makes sense to bring tubes, and 1 tire if you have a specific hard to find tire. Otherwise, we usually have a spare in the SAG van. If your chain is in good shape, which it should be if you do/get a tune-up prior, no need for a chain. LBS will have one if you get in trouble. Hard to keep a spare chain in the van with all the speed choices these days. CO2 if you are driving, can get a couple at LBS if flying. I drive and usually have a 2nd saddle that I can change to in case I run into a problem. I can ride Adamo all day, but am getting used to a Specialized on my road bike. Spare batteries for any electronics that need them. Blinky lights are a good idea, front and rear as we may encounter cloudy/foggy conditions. Parkway requires them for tunnels, can't remember if we go through any on this years routes though.
Spare legs are always good to have!
That gives me one day in case something goes crazy on this trip. I plan to be there Wednesday afternoon!
This week is an "unstructured week" in my training plan. So, I'm biking to and from work a few times and will do a local century charity ride Sunday on a loaner rode bike if I can get it set up right. If not, then I'll just do the 30 miler and call it a day.
Looking forward to meeting everyone!!
As an experiment, I tried the app, "Ride with GPS" with the Century Course today. I was able to find the course and download to my phone. It gave turn notices after my turns on the course and would shut down at some time during the ride. So, I'll need just a bit of coaching on this if we have any expert users. Also, for our BRP rides, I tried to upload the files to Garmin Connect so I can access with my Edge 500, but I get an error message. I've sent a "help" message to our EN Support Team.
Looking forward to meeting all of you and getting some good rides in!
After Coach Patrick posted a link last year, I started a "Bike Box" with parts and extras. I have a 9 speed cassette, a 10 speed cassette, assorted tires and tubes and some wrenches and lots of other misc parts that I will bring just in case. I also cant tell you how happy I was to check the weather for Thursday and Friday (NOT). Bring warm weather-proof clothes
