Roll Call for Blue Ridge Parkway Camp (Attendees added by Coach P!)

As a founding member of this camp, this will be year 5, it seems like a good time to start asking questions, sharing tips, etc.

I'll start.

1. If you have a road bike, bring it.  There is some seriously steep and technical stuff here.  You do not necessarily have to ride it, but you will be much more comfortable on a roadie, vs a tri bike.  If you don't have a road bike, then bring what you have.

2. Bring plenty of gears.  Compact and 27 or 28 cassette will be your friend.

3. Day 1 brings lots of adrenaline, contain yourself.  Riding over a .7IF day 1 will lead to a lot of suffering by day 3,4.

4. Hydrate and eat like your life depends on it.

5. Bring clothing to fit spring in the mountains.  Could be 40's to 80's.  We've historically lucked out on rain, but be prepared.

I'll let the other vets chime in here.  Looking forward to another awesome camp in the mountains.  I've got a couple new micro breweries lined up for us to visit post ride.

  • Hi Dave and other BRP campers
Looking forward to my third BRP adventure. I'm eagerly awaiting the final deets of what Anne has planned for us. I know the routes we'll ride will be awesome again. The second year with more gears was more fun. Can't wait
  • See my dashboard post from this AM.
    Looking forward to it!.
  • I will miss being there this year Dave/Robert/Trish. Oh well. I am a working girl now and it is hard to get time off. Have fun. Watch those switch backs ----eeeeekkkkk
  • I'm so excited, and so scared. This Chicago girl needs to find some climbing legs!
  • Brenda only whined about the downhills not the climbing.
  • I'm out this year, but I'd like to challenge your assertion that we've 'lucked out on rain' as I recall a certain ride in 2013 in which I was dodging lightning bolts while being pelted at 30MPH by needle like raindrops and limited stopping ability on a set of carbon rims.

Have fun...and pour out some beer for the homeys that can't make it.

Also..watch out for P in the hot tub as he can get a little handsy after a few cool ones.

  • Oh yes Jeremy, I remember you guys getting caught out for a brief spring shower. I had decided to make it a shorter day and was back in the hot tub by then!! Sorry you can't make it this year. Will drink a cold one for ya.
  • I am in and really looking forward to it. I picked up a new compact crankset today, and will hopefully have time to put it on later this week to get some solid shakeout time on it before camp.

Is anyone leaving from the DC area? If so, and you want to catch a ride, let me know.
  • I'm in for my first BRC.  Looking forward to it.  Trying to round up a road bike now to bring with me.  If I were about 4" shorter, I'd have ZERO problems finding a nice used one.

  • Some more things to get done before camp. Get your bike tuned up, new tires, check your brakes, cables, etc. If you make big changes, like install a compact crank, make sure to get some miles on it and de-bug it. You don't want to spend your camp time at the LBS getting stuff fixed. There are a couple great LBS in Boone, but they are not extremely familiar with Tri bikes(if thats what you bring) and don't stock many parts for them. This is the time to be riding a saddle you are in LOVE with. Due to the terrain, you will be doing well to average 15mph, so to get in the miles, you can be in the saddle for 5-7 hours/day. Getting Excited about this!

  • Left work early today and got the compact crankset installed on the road bike (properly, it seems), so I think I'm set. I'm taking the bike to the mountains of Western Maryland this weekend for a couple days of climbing to make sure everything is working well.
  • So,
Blue Ridge Camp attendees might consider linking their Strava to the Competitive cyclist site. Competitive Cyclist will give you a dollar off for every hour that you log riding and camp should be good for a couple of bucks. Just thinking out of the box here...
  • Team! Are you pumped!!! I so excited for this camp...so much awesomeness...but you have some work do to.

  • Coach P The link in your post "to connect in the forum" goes to med tent. I'm getting excited and need to share.
  • Hey - so anyone else in the same boat can relax, I am taking my tri-bike. My road bike has been on my trainer for a very long time and I'm not going to try and re-hab it for something like this.

Also, I need more time on it and what the heck, this is supposed to be fun!

BRENDA!!! Who will wait for me at the bottom!?!  I'll miss you woman !

  • I rode my tri bike last year, but this year she has my IMMT climbing gears (it still won't be enough!) to hopefully help a bit. I haven't had a rock solid OS, so I'm feeling a bit out of shape...hoping to hit the outdoors here in the next few weeks to do some actual riding and pray that I can make it back daily for BEER!

Dave, it's gonna be awfu/awesome again isn't it???? image And don't for get a new skirt this year...you don't want to be rocking' last years fashions fella! image
  • Yep, gonna be awesome again this year Trish!!  Hoping Anne has the fashion side covered again this year.  Never know when you'll need to get under a skirt....

  • I knuckled under and bought the 12-27spd cassette to replace the 11-25 one I use for training. I bought the Shimano 105 so it will get it's use for the trip! AND, I replaced my tires with new Continental Gatorskins. Another two baby steps to get ready!

Coach P - this link doesn't work for me... takes me to the Medical Tent!

  • Just wondering - what are you thinking of bringing in terms of spare parts for the camp?
    - Tubes
    - Tires
    - Chain?
    - ???

    Thanks!
  • Makes sense to bring tubes, and 1 tire if you have a specific hard to find tire.  Otherwise, we usually have a spare in the SAG van.  If your chain is in good shape, which it should be if you do/get a tune-up prior, no need for a chain.  LBS will have one if you get in trouble.  Hard to keep a spare chain in the van with all the speed choices these days.  CO2 if you are driving, can get a couple at LBS if flying.  I drive and usually have a 2nd saddle that I can change to in case I run into a problem.  I can ride Adamo all day, but am getting used to a Specialized on my road bike.  Spare batteries for any electronics that need them.  Blinky lights are a good idea, front and rear as we may encounter cloudy/foggy conditions.  Parkway requires them for tunnels, can't remember if we go through any on this years routes though.

Spare legs are always good to have!

  • Bike shipped today to InsideOut Sports in Charlotte, NC. I pick it up next Tuesday after I fly in and get a rental car. I plan to spend the night at my daughter's home in Concord, NC and drive up Wednesday.

That gives me one day in case something goes crazy on this trip. I plan to be there Wednesday afternoon!

This week is an "unstructured week" in my training plan. So, I'm biking to and from work a few times and will do a local century charity ride Sunday on a loaner rode bike if I can get it set up right. If not, then I'll just do the 30 miler and call it a day.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone!!

  • Since I shipped my bike last Tuesday, I've been trying to get my volume up so I can ride these rides next week. This past week I biked to work, rode my trainer, and even got a loaner road bike to ride a Century Plus (group wrong turn made it 113 miles) today. Lots of lessons re-learned as I rode with riders in all shapes and sizes!

As an experiment, I tried the app, "Ride with GPS" with the Century Course today. I was able to find the course and download to my phone. It gave turn notices after my turns on the course and would shut down at some time during the ride. So, I'll need just a bit of coaching on this if we have any expert users. Also, for our BRP rides, I tried to upload the files to Garmin Connect so I can access with my Edge 500, but I get an error message. I've sent a "help" message to our EN Support Team.

Looking forward to meeting all of you and getting some good rides in!

  • FYI,
After Coach Patrick posted a link last year, I started a "Bike Box" with parts and extras. I have a 9 speed cassette, a 10 speed cassette, assorted tires and tubes and some wrenches and lots of other misc parts that I will bring just in case. I also cant tell you how happy I was to check the weather for Thursday and Friday (NOT). Bring warm weather-proof clothes
  • @ Joe - I have a Garmin 510 and the way I loaded the courses into my Garmin was to download the tcx files for each onto my computer, plug the Garmin into the computer, open the drive folder for the Garmin device, and drag and drop the tcx files one at a time into the "New Files" folder within the Garmin folder. The courses then downloaded onto the Garmin and were there when I turned it on next (it took longer to turn on since it was processing the files). I did not use Garmin Connect for loading courses.
  • @Ralph - would like share the bike pump before we ride. I shipped a frame pump since I didn't ship CO2. Although I still might buy a stand-up pump when I pick up my bike at InsideOut, I'm throwing money at this trip right now like crazy and need to stop somewhere!
  • I have a pump with me. No need to buy one. I'm already 1 hour away from Boone. Can't wait.

John - thanks!!!  I followed directions and of the 5 files for the different rides, Garmin only took four.  So, there must be some memory issue with the files maybe.  I looked at the "breadcrumb" pages and I'm sure if I select the right file and get started, it'll make sense.

  • My 310xt only held 3 routes and filled memory. Will delete and add each day
