Was up in Boone last weekend. Was beautiful. Maybe we need to have a fall version of the camp and just do some chill riding, knowing almost everyone is done racing for the year. I'm heading to the Parkway to ride this weekend, but up in Virginia around Peaks of Otter near Bedford.
It is now century season in Florida. In the next 4 weeks I'm riding the Horse Farm Hundred, the Gulf Coast Cycle Fest, and the Horrible Hundred. "Chill riding" is not part of the agenda.
My new DeRosa road bike is ready! I'm looking forward to not riding my tri-bike coming down those mountains riding my brakes for the better part of an hour!
@Trish - you can always draft shamelessly like I did behind Emily and Rachel! It was plain survival those first two days and drafting made the last day enjoyable!
Hey - if there has been announcements about this Camp for this year, I have not received any. I'm still in and just reviewed my season training plan to make sure this fits!
So, I am on Radio Silence for a bit due to household events this year. I WILL be at camp in Boone but I will be a day camper so no late nights at the bars for me. I will see all of you guys there but I won't be active in the forum for a while. If you need me you can contact me directly ralphemoore@gmail.com or on my cell at 3364080916. R2
Just e-mailed in my waiver, swapped out my 11-25 cassette for the 12-28, put gatorskins AND inner tubes on my new De Rosa bike and confirmed my bike shipping plans. I may not be 100% ready for Mt Mitchell, but I'll be there drafting off of somebody like Ralph or Emily that will pull me up.
So psyched that in two weeks I am on this cool journey in the North Carolina Mountains!!!! Whoo-hooo!!!!
Preach!! I'm attempting a 60 miler tomorrow on kids clif bars and water. Camp is going to be interesting this year... But then there is always Local Lion doughnuts. See you cool cats soon!
So - today I did a sprint triathlon that had gravel on the bike course for .29 mi going out and coming back because of road construction. It was a big deal since it was drizzling and the race director posted facebook videos before the race, talked about it at pre-race, and in general took a lot of unavoidable grief. So, I thought "hey, maybe some good will come out of the gravel road experience extraordinaire from our bike camp last year..."
I hit the trail and just churned through it like I was on another one of Patrick's courses and it was just fine. I saw triathletes walking it or picking their way through and thought, "well now, who would've known that would have paid off".
So, here's to Patrick and his gravel road courses! Rock on!
Just got a new 520 and guess what? I got the courses loaded in. Which means Patrick lost a bet and will be rocking a skirt at some point in the weekend. Now what color will go with his eyes....
I feel your pain Trish. I picked up a refurbished 800 just for out of town rides and still plan to use my 500 for racing. I'm not the most techie person here, but thanks to DC Rainmaker and Coach P - I was able to load up a detailed map for the SE United States and the course rides for the camp. Still, I'll feel better when I see it actually work there!
Paul, I am just about the least tech person ever. Should be living in a Jane Austin book lol. The 520 is a bit bigger screen and color so should be easier on the 50 something eyes. That is my hope!
I kept poor Coach up till midnight my first year at camp working on that darn 500 to load stuff. But I wasn't the only one. Just the last! He will be happy to know I won't keep him up past his bedtime this year!
As a side note, I'm planning to bring my mountain bike as well as my road bike. There is a mountain biking park in Boone that I will probably try out on one of the days. Please feel free to bring yours and join me if you like. https://rockyknob.wordpress.com/
520 locked and loaded. Dinner plate ready. Legs might need a little help, so I bought cool socks to at least look the part. See you crazy cats in a few days.
@DC -- there is no way in hell I'm going to have any legs to ride the trails... but it is tempting.
Glad you all have these nice Garmins since I still have my Edge 500! I'll be using the courses feature for the first time since last Camp with you guys this Sunday on a local Century ride!
No mountain biking for me - it was all I could do just to hang on especially that last day on Patrick's wheel.
Reality check today. I got up early today and drove to Clermont for the Earth Day 12K. With a 1 mile warm-up jog I got in 8.5 miles. Then I took the bike out and did 50 miles on tired legs with a couple climbs of the Wall and Sugarloaf, plus a ride over the Buckhills, ScrubJay and other notables in the area. That netted me 3001 ft of climbing....wimp! Mt Mitchell is 7000 ft in 42 miles. That is going to put some real butt hurt on this old body.

Oh boo! Ralph in shape means my riding buddy will be long gone in front of me! Or, I guess I could, you know, train on the bike some.
And I got my "tribike" refit as a roadie so I am as ready as I am going to get.

You and me both, buddy!

@Joe Leave it to EN to prepare you for anything on course.
No reason for me to be in this thread just living vicariously through the team. Enjoy the camp everyone!
