EN Goes International in 2011 -- If you will!

Folks -

Really want to start having some fun with my racing...and would love to head over to the Regensberg Ironman in 2011. It's an early August race, so similar training cycle to Placid which seems ideal for almost everyone in the US.

I am talking with the folks over at Endruance Sports Travel (Ken Glah's Gig) about setting up a group, and am curious to know who would be interested. Just reply below, won't hold you to it (yet)!  image

For those of you who haven't raced abroad, it's awesome. I did Austria in 2004 and loved it...the competition is fierce, but the terrain is gorgeous and you can't beat the travel, food, etc.

Hope I can convince you!!!!

  • If i can garner enough SAU's id love to go!
  • @Patrick - I fancy that one IF I don't get into Placid! (or can't afford US trip) - even if a decided to drive there perhaps I could pick-up on part of the 'package' . e.g.just hotel.
  • I was planning on doing IM Switzerland next year but maybe can switch over to here. Let me chat with my boys.
  • Patrick, you are evil.
  • I'm doing Regensburg this year, so I'll create a EN teaser and blog on our trip.   In the meantime, here are a few selling points for  IMR*EN:

-bike course looks challenging (~1600m climbing), but not killer; run looks flat and fast.

    -Bavaria is really pretty.

-Expect incredible - scratch that - almost unbelieveable - spectator support.

-possible to daisy-chain other trips to watch nearby IM races (play it right, and you could even catch a stage or two of Le Tour before the race, depending on the 2011 itinerary) the weekend beforehand

-flying into Munich is super-easy and imho the best airport in the world

-lots of post-race support crew trips possible (I'm planning to drive to Prague from Regensburg, which is a few hours)

-Hopefully, they'll replicate Roth's 200ft-long beer table that you come into immediately after the finisher's chute (order of operations: get beer, get finisher's medal)

-Endurance Sport Travel is reportedly great: I've met a lot of people at international races who were part of Ken's groups, and their feedback has been universally positive

-Pat's right: destination racing is fantastic and it would be a blast with other EN'ers.  Let your fitness take you incredible places.

-and last ... "Four Keys" = Vier

    Schlüssel!

(edit: apparently there are only 4 keys)

  • I'd rather do IM Germany, get in some Pamplona action (running with the bulls) and some more stages of TdF. That's my trifecta!!!
  • and, there's a really cool cathedral there, for you Euro cathedral buffs.  Regensburg was a pretty big part of the late Holy Roman Empire...

    Mike

  • Cathedrals??!!

  • Architecture is fine, but I think im going to hang at that beer tent!
  • If (when) I go back to Munich, it's going to be a PURE vacation - including Oktoberfest. No tris involved, especially with the frauleins looking like that! GRRR! HAHA
  • going abroad is definitely on my list of things to do! image

  • I think that Patrick has been reading the ladies forum!!! I just posted last night, that I want to do Germany, Switzerland, Philippines....
If I can get the money, SAU's, and time off from work, I'm there!!! Whenever you get some $$$ figures together, toss them out here so we can see! Danka! image
  • Dammit Patrick! That sounds awesome! BUT ONLY IF THE SWIM WILL NOT BE 5X degrees F!!!!

My sister and bro-in-law did the Rapperswil-Jona HIM in '08 and flipping LOVED it. Afterwards they spent several days riding bikes and trains around the mountains of Switzerland and Itally. They highly recommended Euro racing.

    Flip! Keep me posted.....
  • put me on the email list. I've burned through all my SAUs and need awhile before the next IM discussion starts again image (If it was in Italy, I wouldn't have to ask.)

  • @Tom - beauty of Germany is that you'll be able to drive down to Italy fairly quickly, thru the mountains, Lake Garda or Como etc, etc - wondeful!
  • Wrong corner of Germany! You want to be closer to the north east not south west. Although our offices are only about 2 hours north of there, so maybe I can expense it as a business trip image

Sure would be fun though. It is funny I have been over there fairly often and only once seen a tri-bike out on the road (or on car). Tons of people ride bikes (while smoking, and with the women in dresses LOVE IT) but I always get odd looks when I go running on the streets. All my german coworkers explain that nobody runs on the streets, they all run in the parks. Unfortunately where I travel too (computer data centers) there are no parks, it is always the industrial side of whatever strange corner of the world I am going too.

  • yes I have been to that Cathedral... and yes a neat city. and yes Bavaria is wonderful. DH was stationed in Germany for 3 years. we saw a LOT. haven't decided about 2011 yet. m

    David,

Lived in Bonn for three years.  We drove to Italy once, flew Ryanair a bunch of times.  I agree with Patrick re this area of Germany; beautiful country, huge fan support for triathlons, it would be a fantastic destination event.

  • Patrick:

I'm in!!! I've wanted to do an international race for the longest time but haven't convinced anyone yet.

    Joanna
  • Wow! If this could be tied into some Tour viewing the SAU could potentially go through the roof..
  • The tour ends on 7/24, and the race is slated for now, in early August. We'll see how it plays out but I would not be averse to sriting TdF taper guidance for you folks before the big race.  image

Looks like we have a pretty solid contingent...I will follow up with EST in the next few weeks, but if you have any other feedback or questiosn, please post them here!

    Patrick

  • Like I said earlier, IM Germany, Pamplona (EN-style tempo work, being chased by bulls instead of RnP) and TdF. That way you can really use the post-IM downtime with wine and more bicycles!
  • Hey guys,

I could not tell you how happy I will be to race with the team.

Yes I’m a member since a while but living in France I’m not easily able to enjoy the races with you.

So as you can guess I’m definitely with you if you come to Germany in 2011.

    Fred.

  • @Fred - awesome! we have about 6-8 folks interested, so this is almost a green light!

  • could be a def poss for me! have been looking to go there!
  • I've been toying with IM Switzerland, but this could be a really fun alternative.... and nice to do with a group. A possibility... but can't bring it up yet as it is too soon after IMSG!
  • @JC if you are in, the fookin' trips a go!!!

    @Mark, we'll help plot image
  • I have been looking at Europe for a while, but want to go with a group-this would be perfect-count me in SAU bank is full image
  • I'm interested in a ball park figure for the trip, and spouse cost as well. Do you have any loose figures yet?
  • Better figure 5Gs...airfare, bike shipping, hotels, food, exchange rate, souvenirs, train fare, etc.
