  • Kitboo- been there, done that except I set up in our ward work room, told the floor nurses to come to me with questions and had pagers and phone sitting within easy reach. It's amazing how easy it is to convince people that your "hard core." um, no just not lazy either.

Anyway, thanks again to my fellow Mooers as I came home from work tired and not very motivated today and after reading through the day's posts on this thread sucked it up and went out and ran and then did core so I've ran two days and swam yesterday so far. That's an exceptionally good week so far for work out frequency for me. However the rest of the week consists of call tomorrow, Saturday clinic and call Sunday.

I feel better about the four year old that died on my call the day before leaving for SG after talking with our department chief an Infectious Disease specialist for a while today. I had figured overwhelming sepsis as a cause when I left but I only worked a few hours more after her death and we had no real solid information yet and he/the prelim autopsy findings confirmed that. She arrested literally minutes after arriving in the ED and we never got her back. He said that yes the underlying buggy and process is that fast and no it would likely not have made any difference if we had somehow got her any earlier. The scary part is that the buggy was group A Strep or Strep pyogenes, the causative agent behind strep throat and other considerably nastier things such as necrotizing fascititis and in her case a fatal pneumonia. I hope someone can explain this information to her parents in such a way that they don't 'what if' themselves the rest of their lives.

Off to bed so I can work a 27 hour day tomorrow. At least I'll get to see two families/babies that are interesting tomorrow, a newly repaired total anamolous pulmonary veins and one whose platelet count bottomed out at 4 after birth. The rest will likely be the garden variety sick and snotty. I'm still waffling on applying for Pediatric CArdiology or Neonatalogy fellowship. Need to make the decision over the next couple months as the application is due 3 days after our little Sept 12th eventimage

  • Kit, very cool for the bike in office but yes way too hot! take the fan. nice that you are multitasking. KrisF it is that time of year, I find May to always be a busy month. Lpatch, how is that stroke??
  • totally pumped and in need of vacation. 12 hours and 32 patients till freedom!! image

That being said, my little plans of a swim/run mini focus went out the window on Monday more or less. Totally beat from living at the office so my "mini focus" has turned to "mini workouts" of 30-40 minutes a day this week. Oops. Will make up for it next week.

  • Liegh, always crazy the week before a vacation! very cool that you get to go! m
  • Right there with you Leigh. 8 more hours and I just can't wait!!

Lynne (and all you other Docs/Nurses/Vets/Medical Care folks). I simply don't know how you do what you do, There are many time during my day when I have to make tough judgement calls- but two things always keep me from jumping off the deep end. 1- I have a great support & management team that I can go to for a quick double check of any decision- in fact, it's kinda the way legal folks think anyway- they like to bounce the idea around a lot and poke holes in it before coming to a final decision or recommendation. That process works well for me. 2- little to nothing I do is likely going to result in someones death or injury. I often settle my head by saying "no one is going to die over this decision" and that keeps me from going into analysis paralysis. But you med folks- ugh, all I can say is I'm so grateful you all have the temperament to do what you need to do every day.

I had a nice 90 min run today. Easy & slow- just happy to be able to run 90 minutes! So cool :-)
  • Nemo and Leigh: I'm with ya too---Just hanging on by my fingernails until 4pm then it's VACAY!

Lynne: I'm thoroughly impressed that you (and Su Carter!) can train for an IM during residency. Residency for me was a 6 year hiatus from any consistent exercise---maybe a few stolen long runs, some running up and down the stairs in the hospital, 90 minutes of Tai Bo at midnight...but nowhere resembling IM training. After a decade out from residency, I still haven't completely figured out how to leave work at work. My first 5 years out I couldn't stop thinking about surgery, had dreams about operations and my patients. It's much better now. image

So I was AIP at 5:30. Felt really good in the water (which is infrequent for me). Going to do a 60 min run after work. I was getting Moo-Jo as ready to go to ToC when my DH said,"Can I take Moo-Jo with me this weekend to my race?" He's racing an Xterra tri in NJ this weekend and said he'd take a few pics of Moo-Jo with the mountain bike. I'm tickled pink! Moo-Jo is going off-road!
  • Moo-Jo off road! Love it!!! No worries Kitboo, I'll be bringing my Moo-Jo and we can share her :-) I think it's really cool your hubby got into it. Mine just rolls his eyes every time I pick up the little cow- he thinks I'm nuts!
  • Lynn, Leigh -- What crazy weeks. Take care!

Kitima - You totally need a fan. But bada** points to you for workout multi-tasking

ToC peeps - Moojo wants to kiss Andy Schleck. I am sure of it.

Work has been insane this week. AOP yesterday afternoon for a 2x1/2 and a 2x1 at TP. Running weather was a perfect 50 degrees. I love it! I did get to remember that when you get new watts, you also get the extra sore run the next day. And that is how we make new vdots and get mentally tough.

AOB after work for me. Mmm. 30/30s. I've also promised myself i would get myself to six-thirty a.m. yoga at the gym on Friday morning. That's the real challenge of the week!

  • Happiness is leaving work on Thursday afternoon, it is 87 degrees outside, and the LR is already DONE!!!! My head cold is trying to beat me down, but I am fighting back.

Jealous of all you heading to ToC, you guys are going to have a blast. I can't wait for MOO camp!!!

Su and I are looking forward to a weeks vacay starting next Sat. Her folks have a house on the Gulf Coast and we load up dogs, bikes, running shoes, books, and cold beverages. Fortunately, this(so far) is untouched by the oil spill. In the meantime she has to go to a conference in San Francisco until next Wed.

Going to blow my nose for the 9millionth time today

  • That Thurs morning run....it pains me to get rolling so early, but as soon as it's done there is NO better sense of relief. By noon, I've basically forgotten I've done it. (Except when I walk up stairs. image) Did ~10 miles this morning. Felt OK, not bad and great at times. Finished feeling very strong and solid, so that was good. Having a physically down and tired day. Up and down--and so it goes. But I'm getting it done, and while it's not all what it once was, I'm just happy to be in the thick of it with all of you.

  • Thursday I was scheduled to do my long run, but I was feeling the need to get on my bike and ride.  So I got out at 4:45 am and pushed hard for 40 minutes before joining my group ride for another hour of fun.  Because my legs were tired it turned into a harder workout than I had planned.

Hit the roads for my long run at 6:30 pm, felt surprisingly good.  Did a 20 miute warm up then 30 min at MP ( 7:00)  10 min recovery then 20 min . at HMP ( 6:39)  a little faster than I should have gone, but the legs were moving so I went with it.   Total workout was 11.50 miles at an average pace of 7:10.    Very happy with the results considedring what I did in the morning, and that I have only been back to running for 1 week following a 3 week layoff with a calf injury.

I was worried about my ability to compete at Mooseman 70.3 because of the calf, but my confidence is now back and I can't wait.  3 weeks to go.

Last night at 8:30  AIIB  ( Ass in ice bath !!)    Compressiom pants on, watch Celtics win, solid night sleep.   Ready for another day !!!!!

Looking forward to reading some reports about the TOC,  very jealous, have an awesome time !!!!

  • I rode 20 yesterday morning and then 17 onroad but on mt bike last night! got myintervals in and then helped some newbies ride while on mt bike. but still got a workout in on that bike! anyways no running yesterday and me too on being tired a bit.. or was it the fact that son grads and I got teary eyed 3 x yesterday!! went to his school for another program and well... saw him unload his locker and I thought oh no not again.. first son graduated and I was blue that whole summer!!! we moved that summer too ... and I have five kids to do this with! I am happy for his chances and very excited for him but yesterday if I wasn't riding being carefree, I was thinking of him being gone!! linda can relate! good thing for training to keep me sane! m
  • I need to get my AIIB on a more regular basis now too!! Ha! Too funny. My flight is delayed to Chicago on the first travel let to TOC. Today's workout is going to be a sprint to the connecting flight!! I just hope my bags are able to run as fast!

Good travel luck!  Are you flying through ORD or MDW? Everything is delayed at ORD. Everything.

  • Knocked out long run last night (back to hot, humid and pollen in KY). AIP 5:35am this morning for masters- 3000 - yee ha! Now, 11am and ready for NAP!
  • Kris- I  don't know how you tolerate the heat in the afternoon!! I simply can't do it.

Had plans to be AIP  early, but cold keeps recycling and my head was killing me this morning. Bagged it, so I  will feel ok for long ride tomorrow.

  • @Gina- Take care of that cold and get it gone. I think mine lingered a bit because I was trying too hard to keep training.

@Linda- I am steadily working on incorporating the power walk breaks into my runs. I think it definitely helps.

Yesterday, I knew I had over reached to the bad point. I was cranky at every opportunity and wanted to nap. Slept in today and am feeling much better. AIP after work tonight.
  • Michele - I'm also AIP tonight and love knowing I'll have company in my rather lame Friday night activity.

I did 30/30s last night with no music, because I left the ipod at work. And then did an variation of AIIB -- AIB w/ glass of wine.

  • What is AIIB?

2500m in masters today. I am going to try and keep swimming closer to 2500-2700m per session rather than jumping out at 2,000, which I have been doing. I'll wait to ramp up to 3000 later in the summer when the peak hits. I'll be good to go for WI.

@MIchele--I think those walk breaks are going to save my quads through the training too. Pace is within my tolerances for sure, and my legs are far less taxed when done. I'm all about getting through this in one piece, and in fine form. I think it definitely helps.

    I just have one question...

HOW COME KRIS NEVER GETS TIRED?????? I want to be her in my next life.

Obviously you didn't read my post this morning in the women's forum..... was so sleepy/tired on the way to swim as I was driving, the thought occurred that I wasn't sure if I had put shorts on over my bathing suit.

  • AIIB - See Bob's post below: Ass in ice bath.

  • finishing up 3 weeks of tng and I did ride Sat/Sunday and ran a brick so covered 100 miles of ground. got a century in June so rode a bit more mileage than plan...so a good end to week #3
