Training Peaks Q & A Thread
With the “team / OS-wide focus on tracking training data” and Training Peaks being the recommended platform to log and analyze this data, there will be many of us who have lots of questions. It would be great to have a centralized location for information on how to use TP, especially for us newbies. Post your questions here and hopefully some of the more enlightened members will share their wisdom, tips and tricks for using TP.

@Dave, it looks like the last 30 days will be sync'd up once you upload a new workout.
If you have taken the FIT or TCX files off the device and saved them in a folder on your computer you should be able to select them all and drag/drop them into your browser when it is viewing the TrainingPeaks calendar view.
If you don't have the original workout files then I don't know. You used to be able to export TCX files from Garmin Connect (painstakingly one-by-one) but I don't know if the "Modern" version still supports that. Also it would export all files as a TCX so it the file was originally a FIT file you would only be able to export that which the TCX format supports (for example you would lose temperature information, etc).
careful though, if you ad strava to the mix, it will RE upload a 2nd copy to strava...
Question 2 - Does TP automatically score TSS for swimming and running like a Garmin does for biking?
Question 3 - I don't use a Garmin for my indoor cycling. Instead, I use the old big yellow Joule and once in a blue moon download one or two work-outs to Power Agent for review, and delete the majority of the activities. Do we need to download our Garmin & Joule into TP?
Question 4 - Does TP calculate and graph CTL? If it does, so what?
+1 on tapiriik.
There is an easy fix to Scott's issue. When you configure don't have Strave send to the other sites. I usually have GC send to TP and Strava and have TR send to GC (which then sends to TP and Strava). Pay the $2 and have this all happen automatically.
1) Not sure what the other workout will be. I don't believe EN has preloaded workouts. Personally I cut/paste the workouts in the text block on the calendar. I'll get a couple of weeks ahead so I can see the plan and expected times, etc. Manual but it works for me.
2) TP will score TSS for run. I've not done swim but I believe it will also. To do so you must go to settings/zone and set the respective "threshold" values for bike, run, (and swim). Make sure to remember to update these after a test. Setting your zones there too is handy.
3) Maybe I'm confused, but if you don't load the data then how will TP know what you have done? With a relatively current Garmin its very easy since you can link TP to Garmin Connect and automatically upload. As others have pointed out there are other solutions (I've had mixed results with tapiriik, but maybe that's just me).
4) TP does graph/track CTL and a host of other values. I'm not qualified to answer the second part to your question as I have not studied these values. I'm sure there will be healthy debate here over the coming months.
I used to be a big fan of Tapiriik, but I'm not sure it is necessary now that Garmin Connect, and several other sites, will sync with each other. I stopped using Tapiriik about a year ago. Now, I upload all of my Garmin device data to Garmin Connect, and Garmin Connect automatically sends it to both Trainingpeaks and Strava, so everything ends up everywhere. The only manual stuff I had to do was upload my TrainerRoad workouts to Garmin Connect, but I think TrainerRoad has since added the auto-upload functionality to its site, although I have not used TrainerRoad since it has been added.
+1 on Tapiriik; as long as you're careful with the settings to ensure that the correct sites update each other, it works well. Now, however, I just have Garmin auto-sync to TP and Strava, a la John above. I just use my Garmin with TrainerRoad (using the ANT+ broadcast feature from my computer) to get the TR data to Garmin (then to the others).
Separate, but realted item, when you bounce back and forth between trainer rides & outdoor rides, how/ where do you adjust your FTP for your indoor/ outdoor FTP?
thanks all!
Jeremy:
Can you map how you have this flowing?
for example, do you have GC sending to TP & Strava via Tapirik?
I have Strava picking up rides from GC. I have Strava connected to FB, Instagram & MyFitnessPal
I have TP picking up from garmin via Tapirik.
I still need to get TR exporting to GC to feed the others? do this via tapirik? or just have TR export to Strava & TP directly?
the next dumb question is, with Dropbox being an option, shouldn't we all be dropping everything in there so we have the raw files for future usage/ upload to a new program?
Here is what I have.
As far as raw files...I have WKO download everything from TP online so have the raw files on my hard drive.
thanks
but I think the last part may be an error, WKO converts the files to its own format and they are no longer "raw" (I think)
are there any good "how to" videos/ pages that experienced users find helpful, it's a bit underwhelming in discovering how to use it effectively.
Does anyone have an opinion on WKO4? It's $180 (less discount) to buy....is that what everyone recommends?
...is it really worth it to upgrade to training peaks premium? I have both basic strava (can't adapt the distance on there, but whatever) and basic training peaks, which I seem to look at more than strava, can only do 2 day planing though...thoughts?
