Hello all, This will be my second OS. I have been doing run durability since that always seems to be where I break down a bit. This is the year of my first HIM, after a few years of short course. I really enjoy the enthusiasm and experience shared. My OS goals are to stay consist and enjoy the challenge, Three olympics, beginning in May, ending in Santa Cruz HIM.
Wow! What a collection of stars we have in the JOS. This is my third winter with EN, and I'm looking forward to it, if for no other reason, knowing that it always delivers results. Pretty much following my 2015 plan next year, but this time executing it completely (no injuries, no moves, no new jobs). Being stuck in that second (or third) tier of my AG for a couple of years now (last five WTC AG finishes were 12, 10, 19, 16 and 15), I know what I have to do to compete with the top-10, so I approach my plan from the desired outcome, working backwards:
Swim: figure out the Charlotte swim scene so that I can conveniently get pool time and start chopping away at my threshold pace until it gets back down into the low 1:20s/100y, then add volume as race day approaches. Easier said than done. But it can be/has been done. Will start this week.
Bike: I have to ride in the 190s to get off the bike in the top-10 and mix it up with the big dogs. That means Saturday long rides in the 210-20 range, which means FTP of around 275 (4.1 w/kg), which means testing at 290, which means 2x20s in the mid- to high-270s. So I'll start in the 240's/250's next week and try to increase those weekly Z4 efforts by 5 watts every two weeks. This micro-goal approach gets me out of bed in the morning and works for me, so I'll use it until it stops working. Plus, now that I've thrown this silly goal out there publicly, I pretty much have no choice. I'll repeat this process in the GF plan this summer, prior to IM build.
Run: I need to run around 8:15's at the top of Zone 2 (145HR) to compete with the fast OF's in my IM AG, which means I have to get my long Z2 HR training runs down from 7:45 to 7:30 pace (translates to an IM run about 20 min slower than standalone marathon). RD works for me, so I'll hack the OS a bit to slowly build weekly mileage without quite as much speed work, exiting the OS at 38 mi/wk. Really want/need the 25-30 weeks prior to IM to look like a very consistent 5-7 runs per week, 30-45 miles per week.
Attending the sufferfest known as the Blue Ridge Camp in April, which will hopefully help me cause a little ruckus at Raleigh 70.3 five weeks later. Will try to race a lot locally this summer, getting to know my AG here in the Carolinas. I'm signed up for IM Louisville, but with the IMNC announcement, my transfer request is pending. Driving a couple hours to an IM is too tempting to pass up.
Cheers, everyone! Looking forward to a great 2016.
Hello there! This will be my 3rd OS. I have not been very good at posting in the past, and I think because of that I haven't been as consistent as I would like! So this year my goal is to try and post more - so I can give and receive mojo and stay on track!! This past year I completed 2 IM's and 1 HIM mid November. I haven't done much in the last 2-3 wks with the holidays and family in town. So this could be quite the shock to the system! So far on the 2016 race calendar I have Ohio 70.3 in August and IM Maryland in October. My goal this year is to improve run durability and speed so that will be the focus for me. Looking forward to training with you all over the next couple of months!!
Hello and great to "meet" everyone. This will be my second OS (2014 and 2016) with EN. Missed last years OS due to injury however still raced strong in 2015. I just dream at what can be accomplished if I manage to hold injury at bay....get through OS and jump into 2016 a healthier athlete.
Came 11th in AG in 2015 in Wisconsin so looking to try to build a plan to compete with the speedier ladies. Top runner is probably not in my genes however if I can get a bit smarter and train from now, bumping up some spots is doable...and then cross fingers the roll down Gods are on my side....one never knows. Quite honestly getting to top 10 would feel fab.
Like the ideas so far...need to really think about how to attack this one now. Took a bit of down time end of the year to pains away and now ready to kick things into motion.
Back for #3 or 4 JOS. I haven't done much in the last 6 months other then crossfit type classes, so it will be like starting over. My A race is IMCHOO.
This will be my 4th OS, but first with the January group. "Looking forward" to some trainer interval beat downs.
I will doing a bit of a hack as I will be trying to layer/weave the bike workout over relatively heavy run frequency and volume, but I am optimistic it is doable.
There are some legendary EN personalities signed up to this group, so I'll do my best to absorb their wisdom, hang with the big boys and not wimper too much!
Just like pacing an IM, start the beginning of the OS "in control" knowing that it gets tough near the end. Save some effort and intensity for a strong finish!
Hi everyone, this will be my third OS. I've been on a run durability plan since IMFLA, so I'm looking forward to getting back to work on the bike, I can feel that my power is definitely down. Like most, I like the shorter hard workouts in the OS.
Hi folks -- This will also be my third OS with EN. Unfortunately I'm working through a loooooong time hip/glute injury that keeps coming back to haunt me. It's taking me way longer to get back up to OS form, so I will be diving in later on (hopefully) -- I'll be quietly watching from the wings until my return. Looking forward to being a great cheerleader for now!
Hi all...2016 will be my 4th JOS in the Haus. I am ready to be humbled by my small numbers on the bike and run, since I've been taking it pretty easy on all fronts since a IMCHOO. 2015 was a crazy year for me with spotty training. 2016 looks to be a different sort of crazy (no move, remodels or HS graduation/college stuff, just supporting/joining hubby in new business venture stuff) but I'm confident if I approach it right I'll have a much better day at IMOO.
I'm doing an indoor sprint on 1/3, test week, then off to Costa Rica with the family. 2 road trips in 2/15, one to Clermont, FL and one to Naples (where I hope to ride out doors woo hoo!) and possibly a work trip to NYC in March. After being spoiled and retired, I will be looking at you awesome work/life/workout jugglers for inspiration! The bummer about my new home is the 25' drive to the pool, but in summer I can just walk out my door to swim. The awesome (besides the lake in summer) is a killer 9.8 mile mtb trail a mile from home and the addition of a treadmill to my "remodeling room" Even though it's been mild I've used it a few times and man is it easy to hop on for a few miles!
Like many of you, I'll be focusing on regaining some of my run mojo that went south before IMCHOO, swimming a bit and shoring up mechanical weaknesses in the os. Hoping all this activity keeps me out of the cookie jar and helps me drop a few pounds!
My season will be BRC in May, Motor City Oly 6/12, Muncie 70.3 7/9, and IMOO 9/11. I hope to make it to CO for a bike camp in early June and to IMOO at least once to train on the course before racing. Fingers crossed life cooperates!
Hi all, this is my 4th year with EN. I'm a believer in the OS. Live in Indianapolis.
I'm starting out the OS with the volume camp in Clermont (did last year as well), following that up with a HM in May then Boulder 70.3 (there are a lot of us). Not sure what'll be after that.
I've part 1 and 2 of the run durability plan have gone well so really looking to use that as my running springboard for the year!
@Chris I believe the GFP used to lengthen out the one run and a little longer bike. I'm not sure how it stacks up against the new OS plan changes with more run durability but the plans are pretty similar with the GFP having swimming and a touch more volume IIRC.
No harm hanging in the OS even doing the GFP. I'm not going to be doing anything like that plan this year but I'll be kicking around for sure.
WOW!! THIS is a group! Looking forward to the JOS... this will be my 4th or 5th OS. 2015 was a bust for me as I herniated a disc 3 days before IMLP... Once i healed enough I got back on the bike and have done a 8 week Trainer Road plan thus lifting my FTP to around 239 indoors - goal is to get to 260 this year. I have been a bad dieter and plan on solving that equation starting Monday. I have started running again and am ready to bring it on. Looking forward to having others to commiserate with and move the needle for a big year planned in 2016 including 2 IMS (LP & WI) The Leadville 100 MTB, possibly TOC & Al's Co training week... Lots to get prepped for!
Work travelling and injury (non training related) saw me false start the Nov OS. Happy to join the January one to keep me honest and to benefit fully from the EN experience.
Hello Everyone! Checking in for my 5th OS. First was 2010-2011, and I had to miss one in there due to a herniated disk following Ironman Lake Placid in 2013. Focusing on Olympic distance races next year, and looking forward to giving the revamped outseason plan a shot!
Will do my best to support this team and our captains as we manage through this cycle. Looking forward to training/suffering with all of you and feeding off of your mojo guys.
I'll be on Week 5 when we start as I had to begin earlier given my 2016 schedule.
Have a safe New Year's Eve all and Happy New 2016 Year!
Hi All - 3rd OS. Excited to be back - I am an every other year IM - did Choo last year so this year is kicking around keeping my endurance as I hate starting. Working on enjoying running and strength training. I like the OS for the WORK. Currently I am helping a slower runner train for 1/2 marathon, 1/2 iron and full. It's fun to be running 2-3 min per mile slower than what I can do....it makes me enjoy running so much more! I focus on my form and cadence for the run since it's such an easy pace for me. It will be fun to mix the speed in and other runs during the week. Ok - done rambling....happy new year!
Hi everyone, am excited to start the OS. Made it through week four of November OS before a knee sprain sidelined me until now. While I was bummed to have to quit November I now have another shot at a successful OS ! So lets do this and here's to a injury free OS!
Hello all, and Happy New Year to everyone! This will be my 3rd OS with the team and I am doing a re-start from this past November's OS. Nov-Dec was more busy than I thought it would be and the consistency with WO and posting was just not meant to be. Here is to a new start and a more consistent OS!
Holy cow! I thought that my "exercising without a plan" was actually pretty well thought out, but then I started the JOS (a bit early) and I am so sore. Serious DOMS. SO this is what exercise does to people that don't exercise regularly. No wonder most people never start or carry through. Looking forward to getting beyond this and training for a great season. I signed up for Patriot Half in June, Rev3 Poconos in August, and need to tell me husband that I intend to do IMMD again, even if he doesn't want to come to that race. This JOS will kick butt!
I'm back in for JOS, having first joined in Spring 2010.
For those that don't know me, I've had some personal issues that knocked me back a bit about 18 months ago, and then last year a nagging stress fracture that also kind of messed with me...though I still had a couple of fun races last year. I'll be 52 in 2016 and I feel like (unfortunately) age is starting to catch up to me a little, too.
My daughter's agenda of summer competitions (swimming/triathlon) this year makes IM training a bit tough...and without having myself entirely together last fall, I didn't sign up for IM WI, which is the one that fits in my schedule the best...so I will again do a couple HIM "A-races" and then whatever kind of road running races that excite me. I'm not planning on a Fall Marathon, but it's been a couple of years.
If it sounds like I'm a bit casual about all this...I like to think it's more like "relaxed and have perspective". But trust me, I can be as A-type as they come and when I am sure of what race I will do, I will try to execute the hell out of it. Last Fall, I did a race where I hadn't been able to run longer than 10 mi due to coming back from the stress fracture. While my absolute time was not so great, but it was one of the most rewarding HIM races I've done because of lessons I've learned here. Ended up in the top 10 and winning my age group.
But I am hoping to finally get my act together physically again this OS. I'm looking forward to seeing how things go and working with all of you.
Joining Jan OS. Second one since the one I did in 2013. I will have a fair amount of work to do since I have been training consistently but without any major goals for the last couple of years. (Besides staying healthy and sane)
Looking to do a HIM this year, either Door county or Titanium. Some personal scheduling will determine which one. Started the OS in November and quickly realized it would not be the right time. Ready to get to work now.
Hi Julie - if you are thinking of doing Door County, you'll need to sign-up today ...it's currently showing 95% full and last year filled within 24hrs of opening at Midnight on the 1st Jan.....looks like this year will be the same...
So, Here I am...officially joining the out season. I've been working out 6-7 days a week since my last race on 8 Nov, but not training. My tri bike is still in the case. Been thinking of putting it back together. I commute 10 miles each way to work and will prob do a lot of my bike work on the road bike while commuting, just for time's sake. I have no races scheduled for 2016. Well, except the 17K Hot Chocolate run in Seattle on 8 March. I may sign up for things as they pop up and look interesting. Maybe a late fall HIM, if the new job will allow time for training.
I will be wicked busy over the next 6 months. I have 8 work trips, 3 personal trips, and 2 conferences at home work site between Feb-4 Jul. On top of that, I'm moving first week of Jul to Maryland (from Tucson). I will have lived here less than a year. :-( And I was just learning all the great places to ride and run! I'm moving back to an area I lived 22 years ago...and if I recall correctly, the biking is horrible there (near Andrews AFB, MD). I used to ride to work, but stopped when I got pregnant because I was afraid I'd get killed. I still have that old bike and I'm getting ready to donate it to a local bike charity that let's people work to earn bikes.
Anyway- bring on the JOS! I have run 11 of the last 12 days. I'm going to continue that until 24 Jan and make it a full 30 days. Even just a mile or two on "rest" days will count. Let's see how it goes...
My week 1 OS schedule is already being tweaked by me as Monday and Tuesday I have business appointments that take out my workout time for those days. This AM I did my bike test and my FTP dropped 4 watts since my last test. My 5 min VO2 max test improves by 14 watts. One might think that is a bad thing. Not so much, it is a very good thing as I raised my ceiling higher and that has been what I have been working on. The way the OS goes working at 110 % FTP I expect a good return on investment raising my FTP by 3-5% on our next test.
The run I don’t expect anything SPECIAL because I have spent the last 2.5 months improving my swim and lost my little durability I had for running. I made a nice pool gain as that is what I wanted but in the end it wasn’t worth it, it was just something to do.
My goals are SC racing this year and I’m steeping into the 60 age group.
Hey team, happy to be joining the JOS with you all. This will be my 5th OS, 4th with the team. I've seen improvements every year I've done it and I don't expect anything different this time around. With the exception of racing Quassy in June I haven't really nailed down my schedule yet. My biggest goal this OS is to get my body comp in line. This should lead to improvements in my W/Kg and VDOT, and hopefully the result I'm most looking for, running better in long course races.
I'm looking forward to training with familiar teammates and friends and new ones too and seeing all of the progress I know people will make this year. Lets do this!
Okay folks - putting a bit more info out there vs. a simple race schedule that I posted earlier!
If my math is correct, this is OS #5 for me - Admittedly, the past few years, I have been in/out of training with such inconsistency - and my finish times reflect such. For 2016, I am hoping to be far more involved with the team - and as a result, having a much greater sense of accountability! That said, incredibly humbled to be surrounded by such a GREAT group of athletes, coaches and captains! BOOM!
The season calendar includes REV 3 Quassy in June. If all goes well, Lake Placid will be Ironman #32 (note to self: have head examined!) On the fence re: IM Maryland or IM Wilmington (N.C.) - will decide over the next couple of weeks.
Hey Woody! We rode together a few years back Thanks to Dottie. I just signed up for IMMD because there are quite a few local folks doing it. I did the inaugural event and loved it. It is THE flattest course on the IM circuit (per WTC). Highest point is 11 feet above sea level. Hope you do it. I will admit that hotels in Cambridge are full. I just booked a room in Easton, MD, but it is 10 miles closer than last time, we stayed in DE!
I "get to" (thanks Woody!!!) be a part of the Jan OS, and I "GET TO" start with an FTP test tomorrow AM. Woo-Hoo!!!
This is my 6th OS and I am looking forward to some structured training and the mojo associated with being part of an OUTSTANDING OutSeason Group! I am overcoming a couple of issues, so no real running for me for a while. In its place I will be really working on Core, Strength, and Flexibility.
Thanks to all the Captains for stepping up to the plate.

I'm looking forward to training with familiar teammates and friends and new ones too and seeing all of the progress I know people will make this year. Lets do this!
Let's get this party started!
Let's get this party started...
:-)
I "get to" (thanks Woody!!!) be a part of the Jan OS, and I "GET TO" start with an FTP test tomorrow AM. Woo-Hoo!!!
This is my 6th OS and I am looking forward to some structured training and the mojo associated with being part of an OUTSTANDING OutSeason Group! I am overcoming a couple of issues, so no real running for me for a while. In its place I will be really working on Core, Strength, and Flexibility.
Thanks to all the Captains for stepping up to the plate.
