The what I binge watch when I train thread

Inspired by AL Ts posting in the JOS bike thread, thought we could all share what we are watching while on our drainers & Dreadmills... to make the pain go easier...

In December, I did a 8 Week trainer road cycle where i binge watched Ray Donovan & started Suits.

Suits got cut short when I discovered "the man in the High Castle..."

Looks like I am up for the next season of House of Cards and looking for what's next...?

  • I heard Narcos is a nice serie to binge, will start it in February

Homeland, Breaking Bad, Orange is the new black.

last year I even watch all the Habs games to the 93 Stanley Cup (don't judge me!!!) =)
  • Making a Murderer!
  • Several years ago, I found "24" to be perfect for hard trainer sessions ... high production values, mindless plot, constant reminders of where the story is going in case you miss something, occasional bursts of violence to match the effort in the WKO. I tried to avoid convoluted, detailed stories which required attention and thought. This year, we'll see if I can handle "Fargo" (FX series).

IMO, if you feel you need something to distract you while on the trainer, you're not working har enough! Kinda like... what's up with those people in the gym who read a magazine while running on the treadmill, or "pedaling" on those recumbent bike machines? They might as well be vacumning, for all exercise they get.
  • I hate to watch anything good on a trainer cause I miss it (exception would be a long endurance day but certainly not OS) ... At best I listen to it .... So second rate stuff works best for me... and music, which I never listen to outside even running since I like to be able to hear!
  • I'm usually watching Netflix while on the trainer (and dreadmill) but when doing FTP tests I'm suffering too much to watch. I recently found that up-beat music to be great motivation during testing.
Here's what I've watched and/or currently watching: Dexter (excellent), House of Cards (got boring/hard to follow during WKOs), Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad (both took a few episodes), and Jessica Jones (good so far). Making of a Murder and Narcos are on my to watch list.
  • All music so far. I find that if there is going to be something on the box, it is a high action, low plot movie that I have not seen before. I find it impossible to just grind on either the treadmill or the trainer. Has to be intervals - even if it is just a 80% to 85% type move every 4-5 minutes - anything to help break-up the duration. I appreciate the suggestions on the Netflix shows. I will have to give those a try. Winter in MI has been easy so far. Other than a recent cold snap we have had no snow - all running stays outside until road conditions ruin it.
  • Like many below have mentioned, I am normally just hanging on during my intervals on the trainer.  I have something lame on most of the time like CNN, or local news given I have no ability to really follow any plot or actually focus on what's being presented.
  • In other words (ala Chuck Norris) Shaughn Simmons doesn't watch TV, the TV watches Shaughn Simmons.
  • Music...I can't watch anything... It's just a distraction... But as the pounds melt away... Maybe a mirror...? Lol
  • I binge watch the cement wall in my basement.  I rarely even put on music while on the trainer.  I believe this was twice last year even when I did a bunch of hours on the trainer over 4 days.

  • Last year it was The Fall, Orange is the New Black, Sons of Anarchy, and some EN podcasts. This year Narcos, True Detective, Vikings but it looks like I will have to watch Making of a Murderer. I once was listening to a book that made me laugh so hard I almost ate it on the dreadmill, don't watch or listen to anything funny. Makes it hard to breath- same goes for crying, test weeks and intervals.
  • I prefer to have something on the TV over not. For me, it's not like magazine reading; it's more like music on the run. Something to help distract me from the minutes. That said, I agree that I miss the details of anything I'm watching. So if I choose something "good" it has to be something I'm willing to re-watch with my wife later. If it's something serialized, I'll often pick something now that has a good podcast by the producers or something that will remind me of plot points I missed. :-)

I do much worse with movies...I've pretty much given up on that. I just miss too many plot points and the experience is not fun.

I'm also cool with just "plain old TV" like CNN or something, as long as it isn't something I want to shout at because it's so stupid.
  • I try to avoid the trainer. When I'm on it, I like The Voice or Dancing with the Stars.
  • I also like the distraction from the minutes on the drainer. Tend to miss a lot during hard intervals but easy enough to catch up. I did all of Breaking Bad a couple years ago. Also, like House of Cards. Right now its Blacklist and Person of Interest. I also have Narcos and 24 on my list.
  • I definitely like to have something on, which is why I upgraded my 24" craigslist special to a 40". I find that the time moves along quicker with a distraction. It must be something with action though, dialog driven dramas seem to have the opposite affect. I find that movies or series with action/fight scenes work best for VO2 intervals and especially during testing.

I like scifi, so I have been watching: Babylon 5 (all 5 seasons), Star Wars (I-VI), Matrix Series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes all 7 seasons last year). When I have the kiddos out with me it's: My Little Pony, Dora, Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, Doc McStuffins. These wko's tend to be a little harder mentally though.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yes all 7 seasons last year)

And just like that, Phil has become my BFF of the Jan OS :-)
  • I love the drainer and actually prefer to any ride outside up to 2 hours. I own just about every Spinervals Competition Series DVD and use them lots. But I need a mental break this OS so I'm doing a lot of Z2 base. Recently, I've watched the Starship Troopers Trilogy, all 4 Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies, Ant Man, and numerous other movies that I can't even recall, and am currently working on the Godfather (I and II down, III to go) and AD, The Bible Continues. As I ramp up the work load, I sub in some of the harder Spinervals workouts or do the assigned EN work while watching action movies...lots of Asian Kung-Fu stuff and about any mindless violence I can find to distract from my own pain. BTW, I am particular proud to have FINALLY seen the Godfather. Up to this point, I was culturally deprived. The Godfather Trilogy is 3 hrs + per movie, great Zone 2 base material.
  • I can't concentrate on any dialogue driven shows. I usually watch the local news or soccer. English premier league!
  • heheh X2 on the TV watching SS

Few series I enjoyed that I didnt see mentioned... The Peaky Blinders , Hell on Wheels, Bloodline, Marco Polo, The Killing
  • Trying to correlate the bike workouts with Sufferfest videos and Trainer road - sometimes it works and sometimes I have to hack either the SUF workout or the OS workout.

    EX:
Test - hell hath no fury (with a longer warm-up)
    Thursday 4x5 (a very dark place 5x5)
Saturday 2x15/20 (ISLAGIATT- first two climbs, 15 and 20)
  • Sue- I'll be doing the same thing. For next week, I've planned the following:"

    Tuesday: Fight Club
    Thursday: A Very Dark Place
Saturday: Hoping for outside, if not, Hell Hath no Fury
  • @nemo - it's Angels for me today, maybe avdp again (or nine hammers) Thursday, definitely not outside on Saturday in Wisconsin (so maybe The Hunted and part of another - perhaps on of the three new ones - haven't done any of them yet).
  • Angels is one of my favorites.
  • Last year I watched all 5 seasons of Breaking Bad, 3 seasons Orange is the New Black, all seasons of the Tudors and two of House of Cards.  I have to admit that right now I am watching webinars for my functional medicine certification.  I think in the future I might revisit Star Wars, and tackle my husbands favorite (after the Sopranos) 'the Wired'.

  • Oh, and just started watching Jessica Jones, Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Broad City on the couch  (husband pics) so will have to add those to the trainer list too!

If this is stuff you like, and The Wire works for you, give Deadwood a try. A mostly true story with almost Shakepearean language (except for a fascination with f-bombs).
  • X2 on Deadwood... I had tried it once and just didnt get it... After talking to Al about it in Placid I tried it again and really enjoyed it... Al really nails the description.

I'll add Justified and Coppers to my Hell on Wheels and Peaky Blinders rec's which I found to be "kinda of" similar to Deadwood.
  • Well ... Since Justified and Hell n Wheels (which is actually getting better as as it progresses ... Workers vs Capitalists, Relations among whites, ex slaves, and Chinese workers, as well as a nuanced picture of 19th Century Mormonism feature among the story arcs) are a couple of my guilty pleasures, and Netflix keeps pushing Perky Blinders at me, I guess I'll give that and Coppers a look.
  • In the past I have cranked through Prison Break and Ray Donovan. Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a hoot.
