It looks like instead of TRAINING CAMP in August in Chattanooga, it will be a new bike or frame in June.
FELT offers a 40% discount on frame + shipping and then deal strips the and puts those components on the new frame. Actual price comes Monday morning. OR I found a clearance FELT B16, same year and color at a shop in Bryn Mawr, PA (Near Philly). All NEW + new component...
Anybody have any feelings? I got mine in 3/2011. It has two rounds of IM training plus lots of other rides I did to help train other new triathletes.

Mark, you always have to do what is best for you. I'm not sure what components you are riding or what your bike budget is for this year.
IMO, I prefer to start with a great frame and try to upgrade one major component every two years. I feel this extends the utility of your purchase vs continuing to buy a new bike with new components at once. I acknowledge this costs more in the long run as i am losing the component/bike build discount which comes with a new bike purchase. However, the smaller annual ticket price of the upgrade allows me to procure higher end components and frame as I apply a continuous improvement approach to my bikes.
Good point (... get frame and build as I go). I like that because of the budget issues. Update from yesterday - FELT does not have my model (B16) available. They would like to upgrade to the AI 10. This is a huge move. But, we will still need to strip my bike and use what we can.
I am looking at the list of components for both bikes. I am not sure how much is transferable. It seems like it would be taking the parts off of my Honda Element and putting them on an F150 pick up! But I am not quite technical enough.
I generally ride more than the average triathlon bear, but FWIW I will swap out my chain and rear cassette once a year. My guess is that after two years you've probably annihilated your components and the upgrade will be well worth it. Otherwise putting your old components on the new frame for kind of be like taking a Ferrari but putting the tires from your Pontiac on it. You won't be able to drive as fast as a Ferrari wants to go because of your old tires. Don't let the past drag you down. Endurance Nation is going to do its part to help you out by giving you two months free – first for the crash and second for the recovery. Don't tell anybody -- put it straight to your bike!
Got serious with the budget. After the bike replacement, I did some creative financing and cleared enough to cover the cost of Chattanooga Race Camp! I may need to find some way to raise a couple of bucks though yard sale/craft sale/part-time job, but it is not an option. Registered this morning! This crash will NOT be my excuse!
FYI - I am a two time DNF'er (Louisville and Lake Placid). Chattanooga will be my day. I do not want that cloud to continue to hang over my head. I do not want the patronizing pat on the back and the words, "Well, you have done more than most people." from well meaning friends and family.
Pictures of my new baby will be posted as soon as I get it!
Now I am mad and determined! Time to stop feeling sorry for myself and make it happen!
remember the most important rule...run with joy! enjoy where you are at the moment... on the course and elsewhere... you are so lucky to have the opportunity to even get to the starting line... Not patronizing, just got to remember the 'why' before the race... to truly enjoy the experience... not only that, but 'running with joy' helps you finish the race... being mad takes a lot of energy.... Cheers
by the way, I love my Felt Ia4! I bought it on Ebay... I had a B12 forever... I don't recommend buying bikes on Ebay usually, but I knew exactly what I wanted and have ridden a Felt tribike forever (since 2006). Mine was a demo.... also, my homeowner's insurance paid for my crashed bike so I could trade up without too much financial pain.
I am not sure what planets aligned, what my local mechanic said to the Felt rep and what kind of pull he has with his local distributors, but my new ride will be a FELT AI 10. I will need to upgrade 2 or three things (rear brake and bars are different), but it should come in UNDER the emergency funding cap! Now I just need to get comfortable in the saddle again. 2 weeks until delivery. Wow, what a relief!
Been quiet here for a while. It seems as though there were some long term effects of the crash (hip pain and weakness on the left side). Met with Ortho Sports Med Doc, PT and both agree there is something wrong. X-rays reveal nothing, MRI cancelled by insurance - Not Medically Necessary. Appeal would get a response within 180 days.... So, doc is treating the effects without knowing a cause. I have not completed a full workout in 2 weeks. So, I am withdrawing from Chattanooga. 11 months are not lost in this attempt. I was able to refine my training format with some good tracking devices that easily gauge my activity. I was able to travel to Chattanooga twice, meet some neat locals and attend the race execution camp learning a bunch. And, I got a new bike, by accident!
I am going to drop into maintenance mode soon. I think I want to be able to follow my Chattanooga team through the event. Although I won't meet many of them, I will still recognize their names and their pictures by their posts. I am extremely disappointed to say the least, and soon those feelings will dull. But sometimes it is more important to come back tomorrow, healthy, and try again.
Mark, I was chatting you somewhere else. It's 100% the right call until you get this figured out. Appeal anyway so that's rolling and focus on the health...that's the long term play you need...you can always find me 617-513-3830 you know the deal. happy to talk anytime!
It's not easy letting go of a big goal, but I am glad you are making the SMART long term decision! Focus on healing up, getting stronger. Ironman isn't going anywhere...it will be there waiting when you are ready to tackle it!
The Obstacle is the Way. How you handle the situation and respond will dictate your performance over the next 2 to 3 years. Do it right and you'll be back stronger mentally and physically.
I think Patrick was speaking more to your recovery than wether to notify IM. I would send them an email, but even if you don't they will know you are not participating if you don't pick up your packet by the deadline. You will be listed as a DNS on the website post race. I don't know what email to use, but I am sure there is one somewhere on the race website.
Coach P gives great wisdom as always. How we react and respond to everything in life is the one thing we can control in a world of un-controllables that dictates our quality of life.
However, he can't make that decision for you. You have to make it and there is no right or wrong choice here.
Do what feels right to you and live for the long term ......

Six weeks after my crash..... It;s a FELT AI 10! My new baby! Just need to learn to learn how to ride it!
Feeling good! Just need to make up for lost time......
