Why did we drop the ftp work from long rides?

not complaining!  I just happened to look at the in season plan for the first time in a few years, and noticed that the accumulated 40' of FTP work has fallen away from long rides.  I obliged yesterday because I was sucking.

Does anyone remember the reason(s) for removing this?   I've been doing long rides the same way since 2006, and dagnabit, I don't like change!

(And while I'm at it, what's with these kids and their computerized shifting?  In my day, we had four gears and had to move the chain from sprocket to sprocket by hand!)

  • get off my lawn!
  • Not speaking for RnP, but recent study shows a little intensity can go a long way. Once a week may be all an IM athlete needs. Race-specific and race-pace plus work is where the money is, IMO, along with 24-45 minutes of FTP intervals/week.
  • @Dave Tallo  - You are spending next week with Tim, talk to him about this. He's got strong opinions on this (and food, and...) in terms of how much FTP work is enough for a week...

Hey Dave, I believe the question is answered here.  I feel like maybe there was a podcast where P went into more detail? Can't find it.... damn internet.  Essentially the purpose was based on feedback to make those rides more manageable.    Plus if you listen to the webinar you'll get to hear Coach Rich say "Mac Daddy".

FWIW, I'm with @Al Truscott that the RPP work is GOLD.  Guessing you probably already know that.  Personally, my N=1 is I could never hit those big FTP intervals late in a build.  Maybe I'm just a wuss.

Uphill... both ways... in the snow you go!!!

EDIT: Found the podcast with P, relevant deets starting at about the 8' mark.    https://www.endurancenation.us/blog/podcast/enpodcast-628-2017-training-plan-release/

Thanks Jenn.  Your internet search fu is strong.   This pretty much answers my question ... if the change was driven by a larger philosophical shift to polarized training, that's one thing ...  but leads to a million other questions.   But if it was based on team feedback, it becomes a different question for me of weighing what I've done for a long time to some success vs a consensus.

Funny though ...  before this question, I toyed with the idea of alternating week a/week b between the two long ride models.   I suspect your and Al's view that Ae work is appropriate, and is certainly more specific to IM racing by targeting fat metabolization, is right, But then again, that probably gets exercised over a 5h ride, no matter what intensity gets mixed in.
  • @Jenn Edwards Thank you for helping @Dave Tallo Make the most of his quarterly visits to EN.

  • Sure ... yuk it up, but when I crush it at Ironman NYC later this summer, I'll be the one laughing!

Let me know by postcard if anything else changes in the world.
  • @Coach Patrick not only does he not check in here, but looks like he's missed the interweb in general, @Dave Tallo IM NYC was cancelled in 2013, thought you might like to know...
  • @Dave Tallo Dropping the mint joke on us all. I sense a wry smile behind that beard of yours. That and 5' of bike speed when you finally shave it.:bawling:

  • If I shave the beard, there's nowhere to store gels.
  • @Dave Tallo - shaving the beard has gotta be worth 5 -10 watts.....  :-).........

  • Unless I lose a bet or there's some really great "shave your beard for charity," gig, it stays.
