Time For a New Watch

I need an upgrade from my Garmin 910. Is there that much of a difference between the Garmin 920 and 935 besides $200? I'm struggling to see the difference - https://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-comparison-calculator?type=watch&ids=37439%2C72457#results

I'm not a big data geek and use it for swimming and running. I use a 520 plus for my bike. I don't wear a watch so I don't care about looks either

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Chris

  • I just had a 935 for sale!

I am still using a 920, even though I could've used the 935, but ended up selling it.

Major difference I can see on the DCR site you posted are optical HR, some of the sports/functions, radar and gear-shifting (which I use on my 510 for di2 shifting/gears) integration, and bluetooth (vs ANT).

For me, none of those really benefit me, which is why I kept my 920.

  • I recently went from the 910 to the 735 because it was free. It does everything I need for triathlon training and racing. Since it's a big tech jump from the 910, I've been very impressed. If you want to save even more money, check it out.

  • Time for a new watch. I see what you did there.

The only thing I really cared about was battery life and chargability on the fly. For that I chose the 935. It has let me down once, on one of my biggest days I needed it most, only needed a reset which at the time was above my skill set, other than that I have been very happy with it.

  • I upgraded from the 920 to the 935 earlier this year. What pushed me there:

    • Integrated HR - so much easier to deal with one less device to put on, clean, and charge. I also use it on the bike now, to transmit HR to my Edge 520
    • Stryd pace - ability to set Stryd as primary for pace without turning off GPS
    • HR tracking - 24x7 tracking so that I can check resting HR trends
    • Wifi - had been broken for a while on my 920, apparently a common problem
    • Barometer - had been flaky at times on the 920, a common issue from sweat accumulation. I even had to get a warranty swap once. TBD whether it will be an issue with the 935
    • Weight - the 920 didn't really bother me, but still 20% lighter is nice
    • Appearance - I can wear the watch in just about any setting
    • Code base - same as the Fenix series now, so new features come more frequently
  • Thank you.

No doubt the 935 is a step up from the 920, but $200 is $200. I think I'll just get the 920 - I've never been accused of being a "first mover" 😉

If history repeats itself, these devices seemed to blow-up all on their own within 3-4 years of use anyway....

  • I recently switched to the Garmin 935 after my 920 started to die a slow and frustrating death. I was very happy with the 920 for the 2.5 years I had it, but was constantly plagued by issues over the last year -- barometer going out, lost workouts, not turning off, etc.

I agree with the benefits listed above by Tim and Mike for the 935. The watch does have a lot of additional features, some of which I use, some I do not. For me, optical HR is a nice feature (not sure I'd race with it) as is much longer battery life. Overall, it is a solid GPS watch and I would say it is "better" than the 920.

Garmin HQ is in my hometown and I know someone who knows someone who works there and two things to note: 1) 920 has historically had a lot of software problems; 2) rumor has it that Garmin is releasing an updated 935 this coming spring.

  • @Chris Ciannella

Disregard if you're going with the 920, but here is another thread that talked watches (and head units)
