2019 IM Lake Placid Kick Off Thread
Welcome to your official 2019 race thread! This will be home for you and your fellow teammates who are competing (and have competed) to train, learn and share with one another.
You’ll find lots of historical information here in this forum, and you can search above or use the main forum page. But it’s just as important to add your information from this year -- your workouts, volume weekends, race plans, highs and lows...it’s all here.
Race Captain - We Need One
Ideally your event has a race captain to lead by sharing their training and generally being a really awesome, supportive person online. If you have one, their name is ^above^ … If not, you can request to become the Race Captain via email here (just remember to tell us the race you want to lead). You’ll get a free month of EN membership and some other cool stuff as our way of saying thanks.
We have a basic schedule to support the Race Captain, you can view it here and it’s not a ton of work. Even if you don’t have a race captain, you can all use that schedule to make sure You are connecting around the critical parts of your season.
Looking for Your Fellow Racers?
Sometimes the hardest part of getting the community around a race started is finding your fellow racers! You can do that via our Race Database (online here, password is WORKWORKS) where you can search by race name such as “Placid,” etc. Once you have a list of names, you can use the “@” sign to tag them here in this thread (so they are notified) or you can send them a private message via the Forums as well.
GroupMe Chat
If you are looking for your Race GroupMe, you can search our official GroupMe page online here. Can’t find the GroupMe because There isn’t one for your race? You can request we make one for you via email here.
Have Questions or Need Help?
No worries, we’re here to help! You can send us an email right here so we can help you out. Please be sure to reference your race forum and give as much detail as possible.

We are about 16 weeks out and I am curious who is racing LP this year?
I'm in...
Athletes on Strava, please join our Strava club so we can all push each other's training!!
I'm told from my local tri club as follows:
FYI - For those doing IMLP, I have confirmed with the race director, the bike course will be the SAME as the newly updated version they used last year.
@Brian Gaffin - not sure where you live, but myself & @Andrew Lustigman are doing our own mini camp 2 weekends before LP, IN LP..
also doing camp Hoff in Vermont in Later June if you can join
Thanks Scott... I'm out in the Pacific Northwest; Beaverton OR. I would love to join you, but between work - got to fit in a monthly trip to South Asia between now and then. Have been in awe of the EN stories of LP, so I signed up to give it a shot this year.
I'll be doing it...
@Naftali Presser - make sure you join the Strava EN-IMLP club! https://www.strava.com/clubs/ENIMLP2019
I'm in. My first time at LP. I've heard good things!
wondering who is here? do we want a weekly thread? happy to fire it up every sunday and play moderator (instigator) in chief?
@David Mehl @Brad Marcus @Andrew Lustigman @Naftali Presser @Brian Gaffin
@scott dinhofer - I would like to introduce a new member @Brian Kubiak. He is racing IM LP too. This is a great place to ask questions about anything IM LP. Some of these folks have done it multiple times with plenty of inside knowledge of the area and the course.
Welcome @Brian Kubiak !
Did a solo camp this weekend. Went to the Madison, WI area for the hills and is driveable and has free lodging. Got in some good miles, but need to work on steady power and staying focused. And drinking enough on the bike as it definitely showed on the brick run on day #1. Day #2 run was better. Hope everyone's training is coming along!
Admin-type question - how is the Ironman welcome dinner on Friday night in LP? I have enjoyed the dinners at IMWI, but wondering if it's worthwhile at this race?
welcome @Brian Kubiak
btw, if anyone is interested i am doing a 2 part final camp 2 weeks before the race.
Thursday and Friday in LP, Friday night through Sunday at Camp Hoff in VT. if anyone can join for either location, let me know and we can chat offline.
not sure they stil have the welcome dinner. last year they gave you a voucher for a meal good at many restaurants.
Where do we sign up for the IMLP team dinner.. see it on the calendar on the front page but can't find a link or anything. Probably right in front of me :-) Help!

Thanks @Andrew Lustigman ! By the way... anyone know the current water temp at mirror lake? This race is typically wet suit legal right?
Where do you park in town in the days prior to the race for things like registration, practice swim, 4 Keys talk, etc?
What about race day parking for athletes? I will be driving in solo early early from the Wilmington area (KOA campground) and would like to park as close to transition as possible and avoid the shuttle buses.
Training in lake placid with
@scott dinhofer
I swam it yesterday. My guesstimate was mid 70s. Water was refreshing. Wet suit was fine. Some people were swimming without.
Thanks... so has this race ever not been wetsuit legal? Is it expected to be wetsuit legal this year? I need my floaties :)
I believe 1x in its history (according to coach p video analysis of LP)
@Robert Patrick - pray for A LOT of rain between now and race day.. there are a lot of smart people thinking it will not be wetsuit legal for those seeking a kona slot.. but ok for everyone else.. I can't swim without a wetsuit!
@Dave Mehl - check out the map of LP, behind LP HS which is one side of the transition, there are two streets, mcKinley & Millpond, they fill up early, but those are close and walkable, perhaps @Coach Patrick 's condo has an extra spot 😂
@Robert Patrick - there is a link on the Calendar widget on the Dashboard
Team dinner is going casual!
Join us for a pizza hang out at the staff house. Bring your own beverages and any snacks that you want, we will provide the pizza, the house and the shenanigans!
Please feel free to bring a friend, family, fellow racer, Sherpa or pupper!
Specific House address updated Upon staff arrival. The condos are right by Mirror Lake so super close.

Lake Placid is a Special Venue, all. Enjoy it.
Anyone heard any water temp numbers so Placid?
Correction... anyone heard any water temp numbers “at” lake placid?
@Robert Patrick
you can see it here, 79 as of today.
https://www.ausableriver.org/watershed/lakes/mirror-lake/current-water-quality
pray that they get a bit of rain between tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow night. Next week's temps are forecasted to be in the 70s, lower humidity and very few days where the temps get to even the mid 70s, classic ADK summer weather.. hopefully the cool overnights help bring it down!!! Some rain would help big time!
Thanks so much @scott dinhofer I’ve been looking everywhere for that :). So, I’m not trying for a Kona slot and I can’t swim well without a wetsuit... so how does that work? I know you can still wear a suit and just not be eligible for age group awards... but do they make you start in the back? That would stink. I need my suit!!
i am willing to bet it cools down for everyone. It's going to be in the 40s three nights in a row this week, plus some likely rain tonight or Monday.
@Robert Patrick - they will announce that it's non wetsuit for Kona aspirationals. They will ask them to come to the front of the line without their wetsuits. Everyone else self seeds by Speed, as normal and they just get the Chip start time of the last person going in the water without a wetsuit so they know who did and didn't when it comes to rolldown..
i also can't swim without one, so I am F--d if this temp doesnt drop😲
