Recovery Drink

I need some suggestions for a recovery drink after my long rides and runs.  I was using chocolate milk but they have changed the flavor of the stuff I can get at my local WM, sucks living in a small town.  I've tried Rockin' Refuel by Shamrock Farms this week but it is a little costly.  The Rockin' Refuel tastes great but will blow the budget if I get addicted to it...  I've tried the Infinit recovery drink and could never get into it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I had wondered about something like Muscle Milk light powder.

  • I like Muscle Milk (regular in chocolate), usually get ready to drink from BJ's (Costco, etc.)
  • Recoverite by Hammer.  They may have come out with a chocolate flavor....I usually just use the citrus.  Like it a lot...like other Hammer products no short chained carbs (sugars) and nothing artifical.  Highly recommend.

  • Currently back on chocolate milk but have also used Recoverite which is great. From time to time i use myoplex but lately there has been some controversy over the amount of metals found in drinks such as myoplex and muscle milk and wether it is harmful.
  • x2 for Recoverite.

  • Success in no particular order with:
    Homemade banana smoothie
    Recoverite
    Infinite recovery
    Stella Artois
  • I buy the chocolate powder (whichever is on sale) and add it to my milk. In my opinion nothing beats a cold glass of chocolate milk after a long workout.
  • Recoverite.  Citrus is my choice but they also have Strawberry and Chocolate.

Full disclosure: I am sponsored by Hammer.  However, my use and belief in their products came before the sponsorship.

If you give it a try and order directly from Hammer at www.hammernutrition.com, you can enter my name and customer number (#123672) for a 15% discount.

  • I do Recoverite, the strawberry flavor works for me.
  • Thanks for all of the input. I may give Recoverite a try. I have never been a Hammer person due to the fact I hate their gels but I may give this stuff a shot.
  • Endurox r4 (half serving = 1 scoop) + L-glutamine powder.

Also, I'm a lactard here (lactose intolerant), so Chocolate Soy Milk is OUTstanding!
  • One of these, depending on availability and the need for convenience:
    Endurox + L-Glutamine powder
    Chocolate Milk
    Dannon "Danactive" drink
or as a special treat (and depending on where the stop of my ride is): Starbuks Vivanno (Banana Chocolate with a shot of espresso, yummmmmmm)
  • Oh, wouldn't be giving due respect to my FAVORITE beverage - per my picture - GUINNESS!!!
  • Endurox has a chocolate flavor if you want chocolate. :-)

Why not make your own chocolate milk? Probably cheaper. . . .

  • I've used Recoverite in the past and liked it well enough, I've also experimented with making my own recovery drinks by simply adding Glutamine powder to chocolate milk or protein smoothies. That seemed to work well enough, but if you candle the cost hands down my favorite recovery drink is First Endurance Ultragen, both in terms of taste and perceived aid to recovery.
  • Here is another option: Honey Milk (http://www.victorynutrition.com/hpages/drinks/honeymilk.html). I haven't tried it. Just heard about it a couple of weeks ago. It is a 1:1 carb:protein ratio - a bit higher than normal. But, might be worth a try.

  • Lately I've been using the p90x recovery product with 1-2scoops of carbopro depending on duration and intensity of workout. I have very little soreness after using this product.

  • I can't do milk and certainly not chocolate milk so I found a protein drink made my Myoplex and I think the French Vanilla is yummy. They have a big bottle and then a 'lite' carton, the lite is simply a smaller version of the bottle, not a different formula. Anyway, the carton has 160 cal and 20 g protein, pretty good bang for your buck and is available at Target. You said you live in a small town, maybe you have a Target nearby? I recently read about an even better one (ie more protein for same cals) available at Costco. Good luck.

  • Thanks for all of the replies. I tried using a sugar free syrup to make my own chocolate milk, wrong answer there. I have one more option for making my own choalte milk that will be sugar free then I'll just try the Muscle Milk until I can get to a shop that carries Reoverite.
I live in such a small town that we have a super WM and a non-chain grocery store, end of theoptions. I am fairly close to St Louis so I'll do some shopping there.
  • Dave: You actually want the sugar. That is the carb part of the recovery drink. . . .

  • I have been using a recovery drink from Game On Sports Nutrition...and it is awesome! Tastes great, works well as a stand-alone or as part of a shake too...
  • Skim Milk (Carbs) + Myoplex Protein Powder (Protein) + Ice/some water (Water) + Mixed Berries (yummy carbs).  Put all in blender and makes a ~ 20 oz. smoothie.

  • 8 oz light almond milk

1 heaping teaspoon L-Gluamine (from GNC)

    1 scoop IsoPure Whey protein

handful frozen berries, bananas.. any kind of fruit

Throw it all the the blender and viola!  You can also make night before, freeze in cup with straw and then take it with you.  It will defrost during your long run/ride.

Tastes good, healthy mix carbs/protein, little to no fat and L-Glutamine aids in recovery

  • Its pricey, but I've been using

    ultragen

    http://www.firstendurance.com/ultragen.html

    • 60 grams high glycemic sugars (100% as dextrose)*
    • 20 grams low molecular weight proteins (whey isolates and hydrolysates)*
    • 1250% Vitamin E, 670% Vitamin C*
    • 19 Vitamins and Minerals*
    • 6 grams (6,000mg) Glutamine*
    • 4.5 grams (4,500mg) Branched Chain Amino Acids*

*Clinically effective doses - no pixie dust

  •  I've also been using Ultragen but can't say I'm crazy abt the taste.  Does have a good mix of ingredients!

  • Any update to this post over the last couple of years? Any feedback on the Vega products or a new favorite recovery drink? Just ordered the Ultragen from Amazon and will see how that goes...
  • Core Diet folks are hip on Endurox R4. I pound down a couple scoops of lemon-lime after each workout. It's addictive. I get mine from Amazon. The Core Diet webinar is very useful.
  • As I'm in Europe I use 2 types of recovery drink: Fruji chocolate milk and For Goodness Shakes
  • +1 on Endurox R4. I like Vanilla image. I get it from http://performancebike.com
  • Weekend recovery (long rides)
    1 scoop vanilla muscle milk
    1 banana
    1/4 c peanut butter
    skim milk
    ice
Blend. Also highly recommended for breakfast.

    Weeknight
    1 scoop muscle milk vanilla
    nestle quik (2 tblsp)
    16 oz skim milk.
over 20g protein, and the quik cuts the sweetness. Yum.
  • Good stuff here, folks. Thanks for the replies.

I checked out the Core Diet webinar and it is definitely helpful (and I have been making some mistakes...).

Will also try the Endurox after the Ultragen is done...

    Cheers
