How very lucky for you Tom that you had such excellent care so quickly right after the crash. The breakdown of the accident put a huge lump in my throat. Thanks for sharing it with us and big hugs and good vibes for you (and your wife) as you work through the next few days.
At our Foodie Dinner on the first night of Moo Camp, we raised a glass and made a toast to "No more crashes and no more injuries", I guess it didn't quite cast the magic spell we were hoping for. But like Carrie, I'll keep praying for safe rides for all of us! Be careful out there everyone!
Tom, i'm happy to see your typing! What a hard crash -- but how lucky you were to crash with a trauma surgeon so close! Healing vibes from Chicago. - b
I forgot to mention that as I was lying in bed when my wife let's me know that my butt looks really sore. Of course I can't see behind me so I ask her to take a picture and show me. I know that we have a rule here about pics or it didn't happen, but i've decided it's just a little too much information. Suffice it to say that I look like a baboon in mating season with my big red bruise.
I was joking around with the nurse telling her what I had done. She assured me that I was still within the range of normal. Not sure my wife agrees
Just reading Tom's update( even though he told me all of this on the phone already) makes me cry. I am so grateful you are OK Tom. With us and will recover. I am too sensative. My heart has had too many scares lately with so many injuries with friends.
Wishing you a great day today. Keep those nurses laughing. Surgury will go smoothly.. I just know it!!
Great that you have a plan. It is really not that surprising that there are docs really good at fixing broken stuff there when you think about it. I spend a lot of time in Ski resort areas and if you notice there are always lots of orthopedic surgeons offices around. Where would you get more of a chance to work on healthy people who break stuff by smashing into things than in a ski - bike - climbing mecca like Reno/Tahoe?
There is a reason why A-Rod had his hip done in Vail and Kobe was not in Vail for the skiing when he had his little "incident" there either.
Oh Tom, so so sorry about your accident! I'm grateful that you have no head or spine injuries. I am praying for minimal damage to be found and for your operation and recovery to go smoothly. Your positive attitude will go a long, long way in helping you heal quickly.
oh my gosh is all I can think of. wow. I could see the whole thing and the baboon pic is something I need to forget!! lol. well. dang it, months of rehab and arthritis but so glad you are okay. m
Tom, So kind of you to provide an update. You're writing is still as great as it always has been, with a bit of a grin and a lot of positive attitude shining through. So glad to hear that given the magnitude of your crash that you're not in the same situation as the other rider. (prayers that she recovers as well) We will be thinking about you tomorrow and awaiting the good news of your coming out of surgery. When you start to feel pain and need something to laugh at think back to that freaking-cold water that we were swimming in in St. George. Who in their right mind swims in water that cold!?? Then maybe in your drug induced stupor you can think about whether a baboon would be able to swim in water that cold...you know, with his little butt bobbing along? (Ha!) No really...all the best!! We'll talk to you when you're fixed up!
Just talked to the doctor and I'm bored to tears. The family demands updates every few hours, so for those of you who are not yet sick of my adventures, vie attached the latest family update:
Just met with the doctor that is going to operate on me tomorrow afternoon.
The bad news is that my right butt cheek still reminds the nurse of a baboon in heat. Hopefully the red inflammation disappears before I head out in my speedo again.
Surgery Tuesday at 4:45 and it should go for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. The accident slammed my pelvic bone very hard into the socket on top of the leg. The ball part of the joint is badly damaged and the socket has cracked and separated up to and into the pelvic bone. Surgery should clean out the ball area, push the socket back together and pin it in place. I will have pins in me forever.
After surgery it's back to my room where I should wake up, albeit a little groggy, in an hour or so. Healing in the hospital is a couple day process and if all goes well, Dianne can drive me home on Friday. Lots of PT work before jumping in the car.
Once home I need to find a family doctor, a hip joint specialist and a PT. The surgeon has given me the name of a hip guy to help, but I need a PT and a family doctor. Recommendations gladly accepted!!
I should be on crutches and ready to get mobile by the time I leave this place. I'll need to start PT as soon as I get back. Carrie, set up you're shop and I'll make you rich. Need to check with Patrick to see if he would recommend you first though
Lots of pills and shots for a while. Blood thinners, pain pills and other such delights.
I'll need to check in with the local specialists. Return doctor visits in 10 days, 6 weeks and 3 months.
Possible risk factors include death during surgery, strokes, nerve damage and other fun stuff! Can't drive for about 5-6 weeks.
As far as whether or not Coach P would recommend me to take care of you.... Well... He did seem quite scared of me the first day....something about reminding him about the movie " Misery". The bedroom scene and the sledgehammer with the ankles.... Maybe it was my talk of " The Cleanse" within 5 minutes of having him with me...or getting him in the shower as soon as he got to my house. Poor guy.
Too funny. I got P moving though and he is doing great now so let's hope he gives me a glowing recommendation.
Carrie Chavez home PT services include and not limited to:
"getting him in the shower as soon as he got to my house"
Now if that's not incentive, I don't know what is...
Good luck Tom. All the surgery risk factors are risk factors we all face everyday when we get out of bed. I had to have my daughter go under general anethesia at 2 years old, one of the scariest things I've had to do as parent was signing those release forms and having her drift off in my arms in the OR. We look forward to hearing from you after surgery.

Hey Tom. Glad you are in relatively ok shape; descents like that scare the cr*p out of me. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

John, that may be the best way to bank SAUs in the universe. I seriously believe the shoe section of Nordstrom is heaven.
