  • Good luck Tom! Hope the surgery goes well today and thanks for the updates. image
  • Just looking for an update and hoping all went well. Please take care and rest.
  • Has anyone heard anything yet about how Tom's surgery went?
  • I've been wondering the same thing Barbara. It was yesterday afternoon (night for East Coasters). I'm hoping we'll hear something soon!
  • I typed up a reply a while ago but it doesn't appear to have posted. If it duplicates, my apologies!

Apparently all went well in surgery and I'm feeling very good this morning. My wife sent out a family update, which I'll paste below.

I've heard that my sense of honor survived intact. As I was coming to after the operation I started barking. I was accusing the doctor of performing the wrong procedure and turning me into a dog. Very odd!

Great news! Thanks for keeping us up to date.

    Hello everyone -

Thanks for all your kind thoughts, offers of help etc as we were preparing for Tom's surgery -

We have just received GREAT NEWS from the doctor - the surgery went very well - the doctor was able to reconstruct his hip joint and was able to smooth out the top of the femur that had also been impacted - additionally he was able to move the hip socket back into the proper position - My guess is that there is a lot of hardware in Tom now!!!

Tom will be in recovery for another hour or so and then back into the hospital room where his lovely wife and favorite daughter await the king's return!!! (King of the mountain that is - for those of you Tour de France fanatics - I am in the market for a polka dot jersey if anyone knows where I can find one....)

The doctor has indicated that given Tom's overall strong health and physique (he does have an amazing physique....) he should recover relatively quickly allowing us to return to the Bay Area by Friday - which is really great news -

The path to recovery will include a lot of pain meds, some blood thinners (shots in the belly from what I hear), PT, lots of delicious food donated by our good friends, family, and neighbors (hint hint) and follow up with either his surgeon or another equally trained surgeon in the Bay Area (for which we understand there is one....good speciality to be in so long as there is a high risk of accidents that involve trauma in your area....) -

He will likely come home with just crutches - no hospital bed - and a smile on his face because, while Reno might be a good spot for those who like the world of gambling, Tom's gambling days are over and while he has taken his chances on the hills those are over for a while as well.....Danville is home sweet home (another plug for great desserts made by our friends, family, and neighbors)

We will keep you posted as we learn more and are prepping for "a tough night" according to the doc...hopefully Kira can handle it while I rest comfortably in the hotel room....

Hugs, kisses, and loads of love to everyone

Dianne, Kira (and in their absence because they are having more fun than us - Conner, Parker, and Tundra)

  • Somehow I think you will be reminded of the barking for some time. Glad to hear from you directly and that all went well!

  • Glad to hear everything went well, and even happier to hear the barking dog part.

  • Glad to hear surgery went well, Tom! Speedy recovery!

  • Great to hear that things went well.  Woof Woof.

  •  Woof, Woof! That must have been some special anesthesia

Glad to hear everything went well Tom. Hoping your recovery continues to be smooth

  • Woooooof! I mean, Whew! So great to hear the surgery went well and prognosis continues to get better with each day! I can't believe you were able to post this update yourself! That's just fantastic!
  • Glad to hear Tom!
  • What a relief! Thanks, Tom and Dianne for the update! I love the "...he really does have a great physique." Lots of levity there in the hospital which will produce some good healiing vibes. Heal up there, Ironman...or wait, I mean Titanium-man.
  • Really glad to hear everything went well, recovery will be tough but from what I hear you are the guy to handle it.
  • I wonder if Tom's new theme song is Who let the dogs out?

  • Tom - congratulations on a successful surgery. I'll look forward to seeing you riding out Camino Tassajara.
  • So when you're on heavy duty drugs, you morph into the dog. Interesting... image

GREAT news, Tom. So happy it went well. You are strong and so physically fit--just don't down play or undercut what you've been through This is major, so be good to yourself, take it slow at first, and rev up gradually. Keith is already asking the docs when he can start doing things again, and I know you will be no more patient than he! Feels super to read such a positive report. Keep us posted, please!

  • Great news!! Best wishes for quick healing.

  • Been away from forums, late to the game here- so glad to hear everything went smoothly! That subject line is super creepy - "crashes..death ride"..eek..

Sit back, take your morphine and watch the TDF..sending good thoughts your way

  • Just had my first meeting with the PT. She asked my status and I told her I had been lying in bed for far too long. 5 minutes later I'm shocked, amazed and totally thrilled. Mobility!!

It's been a roller coaster couple of days for sure.
  • What great news, Tom! So glad to hear that the operation went well. I have no doubt that you will crush the recovery and PT. image
    So, are you craving Milkbones?
  • Good news - Speedy recovery!!!
  • That's just great, great news, Tom! Heal fast!
  • Really glad to hear that you are on the mend from surgery and quite hilarious in so many ways. Follow the plan to recovery.
  •

Well I'm heading home from the hospital and getting ready for PT and rehab.  Suffering from EN surfing and FB burnout so one last post to say thanks to everyone for all the good vibes.  I've posted my x-ray post here to show the fancy work now in my body forever.  Lots more metal.

It's been an event filled week and hopefully this will be one of the last one in my future.

Time for rest and recovery and on with life!

  • That is some serious hardware. Safe travels home, Tom.

  • You sure they just didn't reuse your bicycle chain? Yo. I'm impressed you warranted that much barbed wire.

  • I've been intermittently on the forums. So sorry about the wreck. Thrilled the surgery went well and you will be home soon! Healing thoughts heading to you and your family.

  • Tom,

That's not exactly the kind of hardware you want to get from races.

I know now that I have a rod in my lower leg security screening can be slower on occasion.  I think the best was a new guy who's eyes got really big as he was doing the body search.  when he wanded my leg it went off from my knee to ankle.  Not sure if he thought I had a sword, shotgun or what.  As soon as I mentioned my broken leg he relaxed.

Keep up the recovery with the PT.

  • Tom:

Roberta and I are doing our (you, me and her) regular OW swim at Lake del Valle tomorrow.  Wanna join us?  You can put a pool buoy between your legs and pull for 1.5 miles.  Figured since you were walking the day after surgery a swim would be a piece of cake.

OK, seriously, I am back from 3 days of whitewater rafting and looking forward to seeing you in-person at home tomorrow.  Text me your Starbucks order.

    John
