  • Hi Keith --

October 25 to November OS? Where's your down time? It might be worth asking the coaches if a week off to avoid future training burnout.

    Triathlete training confessions from me:

I'm still due for my 2x20. Stupid 64-bit windows/bad cradle/powertap issues. I'm still rocking out on heart rate.

I rarely have a good first interval. There is lots of suffering and lots of just trying to settle into the task. The second one is always better. But that first one -- total sob.

Some days, rock star workout is just getting on the bike and doing something. Most of the time, the work sorts itself out and I have a good day. Other days, It is twenty minutes of easy with a few sprints and I call it a day.

Some days, I get through workouts because I have promised myself a scone or a pretty new jersey when it is over.

For the OS, I have given myself three "get out of workout free" cards. It makes it easier to do the other 77.

  • Feelin' pretty good. 1 month down! Looking forward to the gains for this month.

Great to feel the love from the team. Definitely helps keep the motivation up. Also very happy with the gains so far. My biking and running is coming closer to where I was at my peak just before IMUSA.

So overall, feeling great about last month, and looking forward to month 2.
  • I took a week off (voluntarily) and another week off (for the flu) after Austin.  Getting out of the pool really helped to keep my motivation going.  I love the open water, but swimming in the pool, not so much.  I don't think burnout will be much of a problem.  I've got a winter beach trip and a ski trip to shake things up a bit.

The other confession is that I didn't do the run test, either.  I did a 5k Sept. 27 (VDOT 51), a 10 miler Oct. 4 (VDOT 49), a 5k Nov. 14 (VDOT 45, but I went out way too fast and was coughing the entire race), with a 10k the next day (VDOT 47).  My turkey trot was a VDOT 48 on a hilly course, which is what I've been using anyway for paces since I started.

I'll stop the guesswork and get into the testing by week 8, I promise!

  • I like the get out of workout free cards!  I actually find the structure of the OS really doable - from being used to 7 workouts a week in my prior training plans, I really enjoy the 5 per week and the 2 days off.  I find it keeps me fresh and I can do the intervals I need to do when I need to work.  The hardest part for me is that normally I have to go out in the dark early cold mornings to do things and that gets old at times!  I also love not swimming.  I will hate going back to that when its time!  Right now I'm just trying to stay healthy with 2 kids home for nearly a week sick with a virus!

  • checking in here.... okay husband has been sick mon/tues and I took rest days to take care of him and did manage to get caught up on housework!  also I think I strained left hamstring last week when running with son's adorable irish setter puppy so the lack of running since last tuesday has made me feel somewhat sluggish and add in with that a turkey dinner and fudge??? well, I am off right now.  but I had a great bike last saturday being end of week 4.. oh, I also put up christmas, mailed off cards and got out all christmas dishes and put presents under the tree and helped a friend move stuff out of house into storage unit!  oh yeah took 2 kids to dentist too and have a checkup for son about wrist surgery so currently real life is taking care of my training!  and why did the font just get smaller on me???  I guess I only have an allotted number of words and I am out now!!!  if you know me then the lack of running is my biggest concern but every morning if I feel hamstring or piriformis then I don't run that day and go ahead and take two motrin!!!  I am eating like I am training for an Ironman however and sleeping like I am too as to be honest I dislike immensely it getting dark at 5:30 p.m. and being cold at 5:30 a.m.!  I grumbe at the thought of tights and all that jazz when wanting to run and chunter when putting bootie covers and hunting foot warmers in my boots... and now that I have vented all of that you can tell that I have been today only 5.5 hours in a medical facility!!  and havne't run but have had 2 pieces of fudge!!!  I will report back when I am training!!!!    m

  • Gosh, I was going to say I've been behind on my sleep due to hecticness right now, but then I read Marianne's post, and, well, I guess I've got nothing to complain about!!

I missed the Sunday run, but got it done on Monday.  Missed today's bike, but I'll do it tomorrow.  So I guess I'll just be off by a day this week.  And that's ok.

Marianne, in all seriousness, I hope everyone heals up soon - I know they're lucky to have you there to Mom them!!

  • Hey Spam Man!! yep all is getting better here.  Thanks.    I take son in for MRI tomorrow on his wrist.  Currently my body is either revving up for some great workouts OR turning into sludge!!!    I did have a dream though... okay this is funny... I had just finished an Ironman, yes somewhere tropical, and I was running along the wharf front, just enjoying being outside, being warm and stopped to take a pic of the ocean.. and then I woke up!!!    okay so maybe Cozumel race reports were floating in my head, but it sure was a nice run!!!  cobblestone paths through nice properties!!  and today it is about 38 and raining and I haven't even seen the sun!!    I did read Shape mag while in hospital waiting on husband's MRI (all is normal) and so I am counting that as training as well!!!   have a good evening everybody and glad that the training is going well for everybody!!!  and thinking about mancona not feeling the love,,, yep me too, not quite getting into the rhythm of the plan although I was pleased with the first 3 weeks of November's training as I was able to hit all of them as prescribed. but I also wonder with your season of very successful racing and then reading in recent USAT article on Andy Potts, if maybe a bit of mental relaxation is in order? and that the structure of said workouts just isn't giving your mind a break?  just thinking aloud here, no offense!!!   and I doubt is any is taken!!  okay gotta scoot....love to all.  m

  • Better late than never!  I have been 2 weeks behind now, due to IT issues earlier, then the flu last week.  Rich had me re-do week two this past week.  Did the workouts again and they felt/went good.  Going to ding the coaches to see if I can jump ahead now, to week 5 or 6 to try to catch up with everyone!  Is anyone out there training with HR only?  Can't spring for the Power Tap right now, so everything is HR based.  I feel like I'm missing so much, not training with Power, and being behind.  However, MPH and Watts are going up so that makes me happy!   Glad to hear how well everyone is doing!  Shout out to the other injured/flu peeps!  Keep on keepin' on!

  • Crazy week.  Wife has been quarantined in the bedroom all week with the flu.  So far the kids and I have been spared.

Big changes next week.  I start a new job in Boston and won't be able to continue with my lunch-time rides.  I plan on taking the train for now so that means weekdays will be 4:30am pain cave on the bike and lunch-time treadmill.  aka, My Worst F'n Nightmare.  As soon as I have my schedule figured out at work, I'll try bike commuting on my bike days.  It's about 33 miles so I should be able to get there and showered in 2hrs.  Wish me luck.  I may end up blowing my brains out in my basement.

  • I don't have a PM either and also behind if that "helps" anybody!!  I haven't done any of the workouts this week, and I can't remember in two years with EN when that happened!!  I have taken Sun, mon, tues, wed, fri, sat, and prob today as rest days!  not gonna worry about it too much!  husband still puny, and so is a son so I am about to print out next week's workout!

  • I wrapped up week five on with a strong workout.  I took the day off on the Tuesday and feel better for it.  This was the first workout I have missed since week 1 which was a write off.  Officially got my PT on week two

Moving in to week six I am starting to thing about the next FTP test and my gains.  This is probably a rookie mistake but I know there has been improvement and am really interested to see how much.  Of cousre this will just cause more pain as I  have to now work harder with the new FTP.  Two more weeks and I will find out.

I will also start running again in January so looking forward to that.
