How does functionality stack up against Garmin Edge 500? I'm 95% sure I'll have myself a Quarq Saturn by spring.

Here are the major differences I know of... please chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

Joule: Has TSS, IF, NP, can pre-program workouts, and has more reporting features on the device itself ... MSRP is $500

Garmin 500: Smaller size, has GPS but no on device mapping capability (works like a forerunner, not the edge 705) ... MSRP is $250

Garmin 705: can do turn by turn direction and pre-program workouts ... MSRP is $500

All 3 will work with a quarq or PT wireless Ant+ hub, however so far only the 705 is known to work correctly with WKO+.  Hopefully both the joule and edge 500 work with it as well.

I'm on the fence on this one ... if it works I really like the size and price of the edge 500 as TSS, IF, and NP are not worth twice as much to me, however I'm concerned because the 310xt has issues with WKO that have not been resolved.

Here is a  video that shows a few of these devices next to each other: http://www.quarq.com/q-blog2009/09/25/quarq-qollector/

  • I believe there are 2 versions of the Joule (2.0 and 3.0). I don't care about mapping, just want good battery life and accurate data recording. I had TTS, IF and NP on my Ergomo and while I liked having IF in particular I'm not sure I'd pay $200+ just to have that feature.

  • Matt,

The Joule also has temp. I'm not sure if it is in real time or not but as you know when looking at data it's nice to have your variables down and heat is a biggie.

It also counts your "matches". This can be useful for racing or knowing how many "cards to show" on your group ride before that last City Limits sign sprint.

I only find the metrics: TSS, IF and NP useful for race day or in analysis of the workout from an effort and recovery perspective. I guess if I'm bonking, like yesterday's ride, I could have predicted it more precisely and grabbed a cookie and espresso at that last Sbux before limping home.

I have the Garmin 705 with mapping and do not use that feature but can look back at ride durations and download the route for a hilly 2 hour or flat 3 hour course choice.

I also have the 310xt and stopped using it on the bike until I hear that they've fixed the bugs as it's just not worth it to me to fiddle with it. I use if for run only at this point.

  • I agree with Vince that for me knowing my NP and TSS would be helpful on raceday. On a flat course without much wind the current yellow PT computer set at 30 sec. averaging can approximate NP but anything else for me and I am just guessing. I have also relegated the 310XT to run only but will be nice to have working when they get the bugs out.
  • More from WB:

    • The unit will be compatible with both Garmin and PT HR straps so if you have either of those, you're good.
    • Will absolutely work with WKO+. Dunno if it would be a direct download into WKO or needs to go through Power Agent first, but can't imagine that Saris would make it difficult to do, considering that WKO+ is the default analysis software.
    • Delivery expected early January, though "Saris isn't known for delivering right when they say they will"

I've asked Rich what he needs as a committment from me = what $$ I need from you and when. If you are interested, please email admin@endurancenation.us with Power Quote in the subject heading. Thanks!

  • More:

Rich doesn't need a $$ committment but he does need a #'s committment.

Expected delivery to him is Jan 18. If you want a Joule to be guaranteed for that date, I need to have your committment by this Friday.

Email admin@endurancenation.us with Power Quote in the subject heading and I'll add your order to my numbers. Thanks.

  • Will a Garmin HR strap work with the Joule? As of right now I have a Polar HR strap for the computrainer a Garmin HR strap for my 310XT and a Suunto HR strap for my everyday watch.  Will race with my 310 for pace so want my head unit to work with it.

Rich says it will work with a Garmin strap.

FYI, the order is still open, though I may start to collect money after the new year. Rich says he has ordered 30 units, so I'd like to guarantee that you folks are first in line.

Bottomline, if you want one, email admin@endurancenation.us with Power Quote in the subject heading, then look for an invoice from me next week. Thanks.

  • Hey Folks,

I just sent out invoices via email so please check. Thanks!

  • Rich,

Just payed per paypal but clicked through to fast to make the note that I would like an extra mount.  I sent an email to enadmin with my phone number and that info too.  Sorry to mess that up.  I'll add an interval to my run today for punishment!

    Thanks

    Ralph

  • These bad boys shipping yet?
  • Anyone know if these download with WKO+? I have older version as I do not want the 3.0 stuff...I don't want to learn new software at this time.

My guess is that for WKO 2.2, you'll have to use the Joule software to create the file and then drag and drop into WKO.  It'll be an extra step, but not that bad.  For WKO 3.0, they will update the Device Agent software at some point to make it compatible with the Joule.  We may have to drag and drop while they work the bugs out.

  • I drag and drop with the Garmin 705. It's really not an extra step as sometimes using WKO+ with my powertap it would take 3-4 tries to download directly to WKO+ for some reason. Thanks Tom.

  • Any update on availability? I REALLY hope this doesn't turn into a Quarq deal where they end up months late on the initial shipment. Or worse yet, drag it out forever - see Qranium.
  • Latest update from wb is they will ship from saris about feb 1
  • Keeping my fingers crossed! Hopefully Quarq gets their compacts in soon too.
  • I email Quarq last week, they said they would set asides some compacts for us so we're good.

  • Sweet - just filed my tax return - soon to have some cash burning a hole in my pocket image
  • Any news on when we may see these yet Coach?

  • I had the opportunity to hold one of these in my hand the other day (one of many benefits of living in Madison, WI...Saris is based here, and my favorite LBS is tight with some folks at Saris), and checked out some of features. Didn't actually use it on a bike ride, just pushed some buttons and saw the various screens. All I can say is it reminded me of the first time I held an iPhone in my hand. And now 2 1/2 years later, I don't remember what my life was like before the iPhone...

As of Wednesday last week, they still weren't officially available yet. It was just a demo model.
  • Any insider info on when these things will ship? I hope it was actually a demo model and not a prototype you got to play with.
  • I rode with Sawiris today but forgot to ask him. Vikki, his GF, told me on Wedesday (last week) they were saying 1.5wks away.

  •  Where... Cronometro, Machinery Row?????

  • Just saw this post in the Google Wattage group:

spoke to Saris on the phone this morning to get an update on the
shipping date, and was advised that they are now targetting early
March to commence shipping. They advised that in early testing,
they've been having some durability issues with the joystick
controller on the Joule, and did not want to release the product
without correcting the problem. As a result, and as the units are
built in-house, they have re-tooled their production line to correct
the issue. They are now testing the newer production joysticks to
ensure they will deliver the needed durability. Their rep noted that
in a decision between having "a bit of a black eye" due to the
shipping delays versus a much more serious "black eye" on product
durability, Saris opted for the shipping delay in order to correct the
problem. This makes total sense to me, and I very much appreciated
their honesty and openness. This is why I continue to support and do
    business with Saris.

  • Understandable but still disappointing. The fact that a company would announce a product with expected shipping date before testing is done irritates me. It's all marketing hype to get everyone spun up. Looks like I'll have to order up a Garmin 500 to hold me over. I should have my new CinQo by the end of the week hopefully.
  • Word on ST (via Saris rep and distributer) is that they will ship March 1. I'm curious if Rich at WB has heard that same info from Saris.

    Quote from ST:

[reply]I called them this AM and they verified the joystick issue and said March 1... I then sent an email to where I am ordering from who is one of their major distributors, and they were told Mar 1 as well... apparently some may make it out before Mar 1... not holding my breathe..[/reply]

  • Good to know Joel...Thanks for your legwork on this.

Cronometro, of course!  image  Again, they're not selling them yet, Craig just had a demo model that he was playing around with.
