IMLP Sherpa Lodging for 2011?

I plan on being in Lake Placid next year to Sherpa for the EN team, have fun riding on the course, and err, maybe register for 2012

But I hear lodging is hard to get, expensive, yada yada yada.  I know we've got several other Sherpa/2012 revenge Chica's also in the same boat and I'm hopeing we can come together to share expenses.

Anyone have advice on the best (cheapest- ha ha ha) places to stay race week for someone who isn't racing?  Or am I already going to be too late to find anything and should I be looking for a floor to sleep on instead (which would be totally OK with me, have sleepingbag will travel!)

  • Nemo -- I think Kathy, Sheryl, and I are camping.

  • Camping? Like tents and all? Do tell, more info needed! I didn't realize that was even an option.

Yes, I believe. Sheryl can give you more details.

  • I have been in Placid the past 2 years.  Paid out the nose 2010 because I was racing and wanted to be in town.

Dana has rented houses at Saranac Lake for reasonable prices.  That might be a good option if a bunch of us wanted to go in together.  I saw the place, very nice house right on Saranac Lake slept maybe 7-9 comfortably.  Downfall is that it is about 15 minute drive to LP, then need to deal with parking etc.  I will ask her for the info if this seems like a good option.

I definitely plan on being in Placid 2011 to volunteer/ride course/spectate and register.  Will be racing 2012 if all goes as planned.

@ Nemo-on race day my 2nd time down Keene was just plain fun!!  And I'm not a big descender by any means.

  • We looked at several options and as it will be women camping alone (unless I can talk DH into going with us) I was looking at the KOA. It's about 10 minutes away? But 30 a night per campsite. I will have a tent that will sleep at least 2 comfortably. I think you can put 2 adults on each campsite based on what the website says. Only downside is there was a minimum nights stay, can't remember but I think it was three nights and we were going to (correct me if I'm wrong Beth) do the mega drive straight through trip. However, I think we will still be there 3 nights if we arrive something Friday night and are there Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. I have to be home sometime Tuesday. I will be really tapped out for vacation this year with Habitat 500, IMTX, IMLP sherpa and registration as well as Christmas in Maine....it'll be a stretch. If I could just win the lottery :>)
  • Camping???? The next time I go camping...is never!!!! (Teasing y'all here...but totally serious about me and the camping. Nyet. ) I can't do LP in 2012 anyway, so won't be there, but will read with interest as I am planning to do the camp. Maybe that house could be a camp option too?

A house in Seranac 15' away is nothing. In WI it was at least that into Madison from where most of us were staying. In the end, it wasn't that big a deal--especially when you car pooled with buddies as we did every chance we could. image

  • Gals, if a house were found, I would be up for sharing the cost on that if there were room. I was just trying to keep the cost at a minimum. SAU's!!!
  • Carly- please check with Dana- that sounds like a great idea. 15 min away would be just fine by me.

Me, too! And Sheryl, I'm totally flexible on days/driving schedule.

  • Hi there. Just another option but in 2010 my family stayed in the dorms at Paul Smith College. They were dorm suites that had four single bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a living/kitchen. Mind you they were dorm rooms so don't expect much but it was a warm dry place to stay and they were able to do only 2 nights - which is rare in LP or surrounding areas during IM week. I think it was $220 a night so split that 4 ways and you are looking at $55/person/night. Not great but considering what you can pay up there... not horrible either. Not sure if they are doing again this year but here was the contact info in case you are interested... 518-327-6098

  • Hmmm...dorm wouldn't be bad. Can we pretend we are freshman girls with no self control? hahaha. That might be fun actually.
  • I've left a message for the events folks at Paul Smith's College. Never heard of it before and just checked out their website. I swear cool places like this did NOT exist when I was hunting for colleges! I'll let you know what I find out!
  • Sounds great Nemo!!
  • This is the place that Dana rented, again about 15-20 min drive to Main St LP from here.

  • I was able to get ahold of Mary at Paul Smith's College. She said that they just scheduled Orientation for the week following Ironman and therefore they are not going to formally promote selling rooms for Ironman. HOWEVER, she thought it was highly likely she'd have a residence hall available for our group. She basically needs to finalize all the needs and arrangements for student orientation, and then she'll be able to let me know what she can offer. I'm going to email her my info & request so it's in her queue- sounds like we are the first group to reach out to them- so I think this is a pretty good lead! I'll keep you all posted.
  • Oh, and FYI, Registration for volunteer work opens Feb 1, 2011. So if you have a preferred spot where you'd like to volunteer, mark you calendar!

  • Awesome. Thanks, Nemo!

  • Hey...this reminds me, where are we on making a lodging decision?
  • @Sheryl- here's where I think we stand so far.

We've got the following ladies going to IMLP in 2012 to volunteer/register who are interested in sharing lodging:

Nemo, Beth, Sheryl, Kathy, Carly  (ladies, let me know if I missed anyone!)

And we have two options we are investigating:

1: Dorm Suites at Paul Smith's College (four single bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a living/kitchen).  Estimated at $220/night.  We'd probably want to bring an air mattress for one person, but otherwise this would fit us comfortably.  The accomodations will be sparse but cheap.  Mary from Paul Smith's College is working out some details and said she would get back to me to confirm availability.

    2. The house that Dana rented:

    http://www.vacationrentals.com/vaca...30380.html

This has 3 bedrooms (4 bunkbeds and 2 fullsize beds) and 2 bathrooms.   I've emailed the owner to find out if it's available and get pricing.  The site says $1000-$1600/week and I'll guess IMLP week t's $1600, but I'll let ya know when the owner responds.

Finally- we could do the camping thing :-)  I'm not apposed to that option- have tent will travel!   But if we have enough gals willing to go in on accomodations together, it would be nice to get inside and out of the rain (it always seems to rain at IMLP!)

All are good options in my book!

Order of preference, because I'm trying to get a road bike line into the triathlon war chest!

    b)camping

    c)haus

  • YOU MISSED ME!!! But I am out of vacation time, so having problems with Monday.
But why sherpa there if we decide not to do it in 2012? (Vote with feet.... non WTC races.... etc.)
I would arrive Sat and leave Mon, if we do this. dorm is fine.
  • Yeah, Michele I posted all this update stuff before the WTC crap came out today (Grrrr, makes me so mad!). I might still be up for coming up to have a weekend with all of you and to support our team, but I don't think I'm registering for LP in 2012. Or hey- maybe I'll just go to the EN Madison rally instead- that was a lot of fun too! Ultimately I'm doing this to be with you guys.

All I have to say is it is a lot easier to get to Ohio that New York. How about we give WTC a week or two to be gentlemanly about their stupidity and then start thinking about a new chica race plan? Maybe they will be like the Gap and realize they are the dumb.

  • @ Nemo- do you know specifically where the dorms are?  I don't know for sure but I think the college is a good 20 miles north of Saranac Lake, meaning probably 30+ miles to Lake Placid.  It does look like part of the campus is in Saranac though.  Just maybe to clarify?

I completely understand the desire to no longer support WTC with our $$.  I'm definitely in for the experience this year, the registration 'sign on the dotted line' is a few years away yet, trying not to be hasty.

  • @Carly- I believe there are a few options. Mary said that they had a residence on Saranac Lake that would be best but she is still trying to confirm what will be available. I'll certainly get confirmation when she gets back in touch with details.

Beth- HA HA HA, OK, remind me to tell you why I hate the Gap and haven't shopped there in almost 20 years! (I close a blind eye to the fact that Athleta is owned by Gap- but I still cringe and think hard before plunking down my credit card with them).

I'll keep the lodging search open- so don't worry. I'm just letting y'all know I don't think I'll be registering for 2012. Rev3 Cedar Lake is starting to have a lot more appeal for many reasons.
  • Told Max last night that I am not doing Lake Placid but will look for another iron distance race for 2012. So I probably won't do sherpa duty either as my time off is gone.
  • I've been lurking since I want to do a reunion, but LP was likely going to be out of my $$$ with everything considered. If 2012 destination race is reconsidered (and I'm totally cool with non-WTC event) definitely keep me in the loop (and maybe start a new thread) cause I would totally be down, especially Ohio where I can get to more easily image
  • What ever y'all decide on lodging I'm in on as long as cost is reasonable. Husband is looking at buses to convert to a motor home. We could take that if we have it by then but it would just be the shell at that point....so what would be the point? No bathroom....why take it on the road?
  •  I got a response from the owner of the house:  http://www.vacationrentals.com/vaca...30380.html

The house is available.  However they will only rent it out for a full week.  For dates 7/24- 7/30 the cost would be $1,600 plus a $200 deposit which we'd get back assuming the house is left clean/undamaged.  If we wanted to come in on Friday that would cost an extra $240.

Given the fact that I think the #gals coming is not likely to grow much (in fact, it seems many of us are bowing out), this seems like it would be a pretty pricey option.  With 5 gals splitting that's still about $370 each.

I'll let you know when I hear from the College next.

  • Ladies- want to let you know that I'm officially out for the IMLP weekend. Looking at the vacation calendar I just don't have enough days to fit this in. 2011 needs to be a year where I spend significant vacay time with the hubby.

I'll still be happy to keep you informed when/if I hear back from the College on availability in the dorms.
