The 2010 USA vs The Rest of the World OS FTP Challenge

Here's the challenge:

Team USA outnumbers the rest of the world here in EN - no question.  But I've long suspected that what we non-Americans lack in numbers, we make up for in crankarm-bending, powertap-melting, chain-snapping FTP improvement in the OS.

And here's the chance to settle the question once and for all: The 2010-2011 EN USA vs The Rest of the World OS FTP Challenge.

Here's how it works:

1. Be a member of EN.

2. Visit the Spreadsheet at https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc...pPED#gid=0.    Or click here.

If you live in the US of  A, you're in the red section.

If you live anywhere else in the world, you're in the blue section.

Confused?  Ask yourself this question: "Has my country adopted the metric system?"   Yes: Blue;  No: Red.

2. Post your name and the results of your initial OS FTP test result.

3. Then post any subsequent tests.

4. Keep updating as your watts climb.

The score is measured by the percentage change in watts per team member - it's all about value-added.   So, if I start the OS at 100 watts, and test again at 115, I contribute a 15% increase to my team.  My team score is calculated as the average of  all members' percentage increases.   Make sense?

Other rules to be made up as we go along.  And I'm saying it right here and now: I'm willing to wager a case of Molson Canadian, delivered in person to the IMCDA dinner, that The Rest of The World Takes this one.

Any takers?

(edit 16/11: challenge revised to "average percentage increase" per suggestion in thread)

  • Great idea! I'm in (starting OS in Jan).

PS- That metric comment was great!
  • Spreadsheet now available for editing.  Sorry about the earlier settings.

  • I'll join you when I join the OS in January!
  • OK I have a question for the US team:

I am weak on the bike and may have a lot to gain this OS because of my lack of bike strength. So the question is would I be an asset to the US team? I would think that I have potential to make some BIG improvements because of where I am starting from?

I’m game to go if it will help kick some metric butt!

The only thing is if we win – I don’t drink (anymore), and if we loose I’m not sure I can get to IMCDA for the hand delivery…..

    Run Strong
  • Also, a lot depends on what Team USA can bring to the table to sweeten the action on this challenge.

I thought I would try to convince R/P to change the url to endurancenation.ru or endurancenation.cn if Team Rest of the World won the challenge, but that might take some work.

  • I'm in, and will also offer a case of another staple beer, Labatt 50, at IM Wisconsin, or one of the camps. BTW, I can get it cheaper across the border. Damn taxes.
  • "Has my country adopted the metric system?"

    First off I'm in.
Second off, I'm going to find my 3rd grade teacher and go punch her square in the throat. She swore we were going to the metric system.
  • 'punch her square in the throat.' Man, I've got to use that one.
  • I distinctly remember being a good elementary school student in the 70s and learning metric for that reason. It was Gerald Ford, right? Right along with the WIN buttons. :-)

At least Watts are metric, if mph isn't. :-)
  • I’m in !!!

Dave – you know me and numbers – one thought on the rules of the challenge. In your post you have “The overall score is measured by the average watts gained per person” . My thoughts are this measure gives a bias to the team with the big young bike hammer heads.

Example -Strong bubba goes from a 300 w to 330 w so a 30 watt delta. Small fast Chicka (95 lbs soaking wet) goes from 140w to 155w so a 15 watt delta.

Consider Bubba made a 10% increase and Chicka made a 11% increase. The % view I think levels the playing field.

  • I'm not one to turn down a challenge but I highly doubt I would be of much help to the USA in this one. Watts or %, my gains will be very low compared to others.

    Great idea thought!
  • Okay - This is getting epic. We've now got interest from EN's representatives at the Ironman World Championship of America.

@ Matt S: Good thought. Unless there are objections, I'll make that change to the rules and the sheet this weekend.
@ Matt A: If I didn't know better, it sounds to me like someone is afraid to do some work this winter. Just sayin'.

(PS - looking forward to finally sitting down and reading both of your reports this weekend!)

Dave best read with a couple of Good Beers!!!!!

  • @Dave, think what you want, but my pre-outseason started last week and I'm fired up and ready to go.... but will be starting very close to my peak FTP and therefore I'm being realistic with my goals. Don't think for one minute I wont be suffering to get every gain I can!
  • How about all us Canadians living in the US? I learned the metric system, but have forgotten most of it since arriving south of the border. Are passports required to verify eligibility image

Yeah, I have dual citizenship too.  If the metric kids need a few more players I can always cross the boarder

  • I'm in for Team US of A

    Mike

  • I'm going with nationality over place of residence, and signing on as a Scot in the Rest of the World team if you'll have me.

    Cheers,

    Neil
  • I love that you included chain-snapping. image I am in baby in!
  • Any more takers on this???
  • Wk. 8 of the OS for me. First tests since starting, updating spreadsheet now. Big gain on bike, but also added a kilo. Need to be a little careful this holiday season...don't want all the hard work to go to waste!
  • Two more for International, one more USA.

Keep those power gains coming, Team Rest of the World!

@ Elly - what part of Toronto? I'm at Yonge / St Clair. Let's grab a post-FT test beer some time over the OS.

  • Status as of November 17: Team Rest of the World leads Team USA in % FTP gain per participant!

  • Geeeze, I haven't even started the OS and this is already getting pretty exciting!
  • I'm just trying to manufacture excitement at this stage ... so far it's just two of us with numbers on the board!
