The "Help Dan Forbes Get His Mojo Back, or The February Run Thread"

EN member Dan Forbes is tired of the cold, dark days of winter in upper New York and needs some help getting his mojo going after a killer flu followed by getting "snipped" a few weeks back.  His "boys" are fine and he is feeling better.  But mentally he is struggling.

So . . . . . any feedback, words of wisdom, smack talk you want to post . . .  go for it.

Also, he wants to focus on running so if you want to post your Daniels running, OS running, or trail running stuff here it will help Dan.

Thanks.

  • Hey Dan,

    Excuse me but, THWACK!

    Thanks

  • Dan, let's go, bro! Time to pick it up. Youve got big things in front of you this season.
  •  Alright, alright.... let me get Valentine's Day out of the way, and I promise, I'm good to go.  If the wife and I get back at a reasonable hour tonight, I may sneak out!  I need to get it in gear.  thanks Stark, I'll get you for this.

  • Dan! - Pay those SAUs!

I'm back from a week of terrible chest cold so you have a partner in the return of the running mojo. EN runners unite!
  • Beth and Dan:

I am back on the horse tomorrow after a week off to get my head space cleared out.  Wanna start a 60/60 run dealio together?  Or a 54/60?

    Who's game?

Oooh! John, that sounds exactly like what I need in terms of training mojo. 60/60 is cool with me. It seems to be easier to run every day than not.

  • I know how ya feel...last week I think I ran twice, thats it. So I started this week off with an extra bike ride today, and planning to follow the rest of this schedule this week. Life happens, now that the head is cleared....GET TO IT!
  • Come on Dan you slacker get out there and run like a maniac.  Of course this is a timely thread as I have been sick myself and skiiing the week before.  I'm not doing a run focus but will be getting on the bike tomorrow.

  • Okay Dan, gonna tell you to get 'er in gear and start running! I need to pick up my running too, so we can both fire up our mojo!! GO FOR IT!
  • Doode, it's gonna be 50 degrees this week in Upstate NY. Time to break out the shorts and singlet---it's a freaking heat wave!!! Start heat acclimatizing NOW.
  • Good stuff, all!  Keep it coming . . . .

Beth/Dan - I will start the 60/60 tomorrow.  My goal is a minimum of 15 minutes each day.  I will do the EN OS stuff I have been doing including the half marry hack as I have a very hilly 20k trail run with Mike Hedman in two weeks and a HIM EO April.

Now all we need is Aleksander to join us.  :-)

    John

  •  I'm in for that... what do you want to do for intervals?  Should we maybe come up with a week by week plan or do you want to shoot from the hip?

  •  Hey Dan, that's it. I am tired of missing you in action. I mean now, not tonight, not tomorrow, no when the weather gets a brake, let's go. I am missing one of my running buddies.

John, I am in for anything you suggest. It may not be quite 60/60, but it will be very close, 40mi/week as a part of OS. I have been doing additional EP running but have not been posting. I am ready to post them anytime for Dan. I am also noticing solid improvements on the bike but subtle on the run. I need to focus on running more. That may help us restart this falls running thread and keep us motivated together. Looking forward to any action.

Glad to have you both back. Time to get back on the horse boys.

Hm. I like this question. I thought I would do OS runs as scheduled, but do you have a suggested hack? I'm a little bored with OS running.

Hooray! Aleksander is playing along, too! Daniels running gang is back!

  • Here is what I have been doing:

    Monday - Off

    Tuesday - Wednesday run intervals

Wednesday - Tuesday OS Brick + longer if I can get outside

    Thursday - Wednesday run intervals

Friday - Day off or run depending on how I feel.  No intervals if i do run and short and have "fun" = no tech.

Saturday - Sunday OS run + Half marry hack = Longer run

    Sunday - Saturday OS Brick

So basically running 5 days (3 run only days plus 2 brick runs) and biking 2.  I have also put the biking after main run stuff.  I have found that I am fresher for the run after I had the Monday day off.  Have had good results so far for this old, fat and slow dude.

I am open to adding some Daniels stuff (I am bored with OS runs also), but not until I am a couple of weeks into the 60/60.  Need to ramp mentally for that stuff.

Also, I have a HIM EO April so this may change up a bit when I start working the HIM Plan in a couple of weeks.  Gotta figure out swimming in this schedule as well.

  • @Beth, I am always ready to join my running crowd.

@John, that is a pretty good platform to work with.

The only suggestion I would have that Thursday run gets your "strength" instead of repeating the Wednesday intervals, but what ever that is, start pretty conservative.

I am inclined to suggest either R-pace but less than 5% of weekly mileage, or hill repeats in the same amount. That medicine for 3 weeks, than focus on VO2 max work next three. OS run workouts can be very effective there.

General idea is that when you are fresh and recovered focus on the weakness. When you incur fatigue, focus on strength as more likely to sustain paces that will work in that department.

Like your suggestion very much. I just have to get through this week as it is getting mangled up. I am on the road and the company is putting me on the back side of the clock. Things are going to get very rough for me this week.

  •  Alright.... nothing blazing, but I got out.  4.2 mi, 40 minutes, 13 degrees, clear night sky, and half a moon.  It was quite striking actually.  So I can actually say that I started with a bang, and you can't call me names!!!  Thank you all.  I have no set plan as yet, I'm just so happy to have gotten out tonight.

P.S. Stark, don't threaten me, you already know who the "man" is anyway... plus, I don't have a mobile remember???? Sucker.

  •  @Dan, that's it my man. Ok, recover, rinse and repeat. I am watching you .........

  • @Dan - That sounds like a pretty run! 1/60 in the books!

I'm liking the idea of paying the hard run workouts first. Will cobble schedule for next week to accomodate.

  •  WAY TO GO, DAN!            WOOHOO!!!!!!!  Glad you got out and enjoyed the run.

No pressure doing the 60/60.  Just get going.  But I reserve the right to call you names for not doing it.

And I just found you on Google so no need for a mobile.  I will simply subscribe you to a ton of magazines (Ebony, Playboy, Popular Science, Needlework, OUT, etc) if you don't keep up.

Just yanking your chain.  Well, maybe!

I got 1/60 done tonight as well.  Good work, Beth.

    Rock on Mr. Forbes!

P.S.  Here is a pic Dan sent me of him ice climbing up a frozen water fall last year.  Being from Cali this is so foreign to me but AWESOME!

  •  Just to let you know John, there's at least one mag there I wouldn't mind you signing me up for!!!  Thanks buddy!

    OUT?

  •  Yes.  Man, taking time off killed me, my knees feel like they are 90!

  •  2/60 DUN!

Scheduled 4 x 1 mile @ Z4.  But could only hold 3 x 1 mile and 1 x 1/2 mile.  I did veer from the regular plan and rode yesterday, hard, because it is raining here the rest of the week.  I rode the first 55' @ .922 and ended up with a .882 or so for a 1:32 ride.  I know this affected my run today.  But I went as long as I could and left it all out there today.

@AT - Yep, Tuesday has been focused on my weakness = running fast.  I will take your advice and maybe do some hill repeats or the like tomorrow and focus on strength.  Good ideas.  Thanks.

Waiting to hear Beth and Dan chime in.  Dan did GoogleChat me just now and he said he was going to post after his run tonight.

  • 2/60 in for me! I biked this morning, so I just did an easy four by the lake at lunch. It is fifty degrees outside in Chicago. I broke out the 3/4 length knickers!

  • 5mi@EP and a bit slower, wow don't remember hurting this much in long time. 85min run with 2x2mi+ on Monday, than yesterday as scheduled bike+run, heat stress from no cooling hot room and bingo, today going up and down the stairs seems hard.

Ran to loosen up, it was brutal at first, looked at my legs as if they belong to someone else. Got better toward the end. This week is mangled up. Tomorrow AM swim PM 4x1mi run, will see if the work schedule allows it.

  •  Aleks, way to kick butt!  Have fun tomorrow!  Warm up well and do some extra strides!!!  I'm 2/60 now.  My legs felt okay, but will certainly be sore tomorrow.  One of those things where soreness from the first day hasn't caught up with you yet, but you could feel it coming on at the end of your run and everything will be an effort tomorrow kind of feeling.  But, got another 40 in tonight for 4.5 miles.  Much warmer, 40 but no stars!  Keep it coming everyone.

  •  Send that weather east Beth!!  Good work, nice to have the crew back.

  • You guys are too funny. Since I'm already running easy on M/F for body comp reasons, in addition to doing TRX, I'll play along. Starting today, I'm 1/60, with 3x1mi at 6:38's, a total of 7 mi. Tomorrow will be the brick portion I was supposed to do on Tuesday but didn't.
  •  Enjoy the madness Mike!
