Tucker, I also saw that article. Very interesting.
I also saw at thread on Slowtwitch started by "Skid," Scott Molina, positing that hormone replacement therapy was a good thing as it allows us to feel/be/appear/perform more youthful, live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy what we like to do (endurance sports) at a higher level for longer. His position is that the world is changing and the sport should adapt to this reality. Anyway, do a search and you'll find it.
I also saw a 61yo guy at IMSG who was friggin jacked. Al, no offense, but my money's on this guy in a you vs him armwrassling contest .
Finally, at Mulholland Challenge last month (~112mi and 12-13k gain) I was passed, with authority, by three guys in NameIcan'tRemember Elite Masters Team kit. I tried to hang with them for a while but couldn't. Doodes were ripped. They finished about 10' in front of me and I was in the sandwich room, enjoying a sammich, when I heard one of them talking about his 37yo daughter. Do the math, this guy is pushing 60yo and he was the faster of the three. All jacked.
Just a number of things I've seen lately that make me say hmmmmmmm
I'd say that the ideas in this thread were on full display this past weekend in Louisville and Penticton.
Both races had relatively good weather and, at least in the M35-50 fields, exceedingly fast times.
My rough cut analysis indicates that the last KQs in those AGs are part of this continuing (and indeed accelerating) trend -- and this on a weekend where the IM tribe would have at least theoretically been dividided among those in each location plus those doing IMWI in ~ 2wks.

Notes -- (1) The CN times are last KQ slot awarded, incl roll-downs, the KY are estimates from the official results of last auto slot, assuming all claimed them. I can update this once the KQs are posted, but I wouldn't expect them to change too much . (2) Also, these are the last in times, and don't take into account the incredible speed at the top of these AGs as well (IMCN M40 winner was < 9 - Wow).</p>
This really points out what those on this thread have been saying -- for M in these AGs if you want to go for sure, you need to be sub-10 or 11 for M55. Those are both incredible performances, and adjusted for heat and age all the more so.
