IM TX Temperature Impact on Run Pace

  • Matt,

As the two before me I also am quite interesed in adjustments for the weather in IMLP this weekend. Pertinent info, VDOT 45.3, EP around 9:15 per data tool, weight 143 planning on running first 6 miles at 10:00 to be on conservative side as this is first IM. Will go from there but may be perfectly happy to stay at 10/mile. Any help you could give with adjustments to weather conditions might be really helpful. I live in VA so very familiar with the heat/humity. Looks like we may get a little in IMLP.

Really appreciate all the time and effort you have put into this work.

    Thanks in advance.

    Bill
  • @Jonathan, Steve and Bill, I will look at the forecast and make a table for vdot and % pace impact and post. The day before the race update it based on the new forecast.

If the current  forecast holds, the 85 -88 hights  on Thursday - Friday are to cool down to a high of 79 on Sunday.  That will be good!!

The numbers below are based on forecast data from 7/19.

  • Thanks for the assist...Another data point I can use against myself to "slow down"...
As a side note, my wife asked me what I wanted her to yell out if she sees me on the course. I told her to yell out that I was looking good and oh, yah, yelling out what the temperature is would be really helpful.
  • Matt,

That is awesome. Thanks so much.
  • Wow, or should I say "Ouch!" - that's a bigger hit than I thought.... no wonder why I feel the way I do running 'normal' paces in hot weather.

A big thanks to you Matt and all the others who have been working on the Heat Impact App. You guys rock!
  • So if I'm a 48-49ish VDOT and my target is 9:30, do I start at 10:00 and drop to 9:30 or do I start at 9:50 and drop to 9:20. OK, now that I wrote that I guess it's kind of a dumb question. I should start at a little less than 10:00 for the first 6, drop it down to 9:30 for the next 12 and then go as fast as I can for the last 8. If I end up under 9:30 that would be great!
  • @Bill, a good question!

At first I thought the average pace shown in the above chart had the impact of the 30 sec added for the first 6 miles. Upon review of the calculations,  the average do not have the 30 sec impact in it. SO yes ADD 30 sec a mile for the first 6 miles to the numbers shown in the table above.

  • Looks like the Lake Placid team has super weather set for tomorrow. Best of execution to all!!

Below is the updated pace impact based on today’s forecast for tomorrow. Note the average pace this DOES NOT have the 30 seconds added for the first 6 miles.

  • Thanks SO MUCH Matt! Your data is such a stress reliever!
  • Thanks so much Matt. This is awesome that you do this for all of us.
  • x3 on the super job thank you Matt!!

    I do like the improved forecast. Planning to run my first 6 miles at 9:30 + :30 = 10:00 ( vDot 46).

    Thanks again Matt.
  • Yup! I'm vdot 44 = 10:20's x first 6, then 9:50's and git er done! Thanks again!
