I was looking at the K-swiss Kwicky Blade Lights and was surprised to see that they are advertised as a stability and control shoe. I am a neutral runner so I took them off my list.
After thoroughly enjoying the New Balance Minimus I decided to try the Zoot Ultra TT 4.0 for the heck of it. When they arrive I will be interested to see how they feel. They are nice looking.
Ok, I've been wearing my K-swiss Kwicky Blade Lights around a lot lately, and done a few short runs in them. No problem. I just hit the dreadmill at lunch, and after about 4 miles, the insoles of the shoes started rubbing the inside of my feet a little raw. If I would have continued much longer, blisters would have been assured. Obviously my form disentigrated sometime during that 50 minute run, because it didn't hurt at first, and it steadily grew into the insole rubbing.
Is this just something I should tough out and deal with? I'd like to think the more I run in them the less my form will disentigrate and I'll be okay, but I'd love to use these shoes on my IM and I need to be able to deal with it or alter them somehow (cut the insoles?) to run long. I plan on using them during a sprint tri this weekend in Shreveport, so I'm sure I'll be okay for a 5k run, but I want to use them long term and long distance.
@ Scott--I don't know if this applies to you, but I know that my stride on a TM is different than when outside. Shoes that give me no problems on 2-2.5 hr runs outside start to give me blisters in spots after about 40 minutes on the TM. It may also be about getting used to the shoe for longer periods of time. I know that when I buy a new pair of shoes, I'll start with 30 minute brick runs in them, then move to the 45-60 minute runs after a week or two, continuing to increase the time while allowing my feet to toughen up at the new contact points of the shoes.
@Keith, that's exactly the path I've been taking. I'll try them outside as soon as I can, but I melt in this 32-days-in-a-row-of-100+-heat here in Dallas. I'll still use them for my sprint tri on Sunday, since it's only a 5k.
Just picked up a pair of my trusty old ASIC Nimbus and then tried on nearly all of the light weight shoes in the store. The owner of the store was helping me out so it was pretty informative session. I ended up getting a pair of New Balances 890s 9.7 oz.. They were 40 percent off which sealed the deal.
Probably the outer edges of minimalist shoes and more of just a light weight trainer but I'm excited to give them a try on my shorter runs...will tread carefully...
How fortunate for this thread to pop up at the right time. Just bought a pair of Mizuno Wave Universe race flats. There are my first pair of minimalist shoes, with my previous lightweight shoe of choice being the Brooks Ghost 2 (which are more of a lightweight trainer than 'minimalist', I suppose).
So I understand that there's a transition period for getting into minimalist shoes, but it varies to some extent for everyone. How long would I have to "test" and train in these until I can safely race in them (say, a half-marathon)? If I'm doing runs up to race day in these shoes and my leg still feel sore and cranky, then I guess racing would probably be a bad idea. On the other hand, if I just keep running in them with no sign of discomfort or awkwardness, would it be okay to assume that I'm race-ready?

Scott,
I hear ya. I am going to use mine the first tomorrow for a brick run. I wont worry about being seen!
