When I registered for this, there was the option to reserve camping spots that seemed ludicrously expensive. Anyone else see that or am I imagining things? I didn't mark anything down on the website, but I'm assuming theres got to be another way. I've got no problems paying something reasonable, showing up with my own tent and trying to gang rush the EN "base camp".

I looked into that and Rich also confirmed the way it works is that they charge $60 per night per car (not campsite).

Thats the reason why it makes sense to gather in a few groups... maybe 1 or 2 from LA and 1 or 2 from SF and then carpool to the site and split the few accross everyone in the car to save a few bucks.  All we need is someone to get there early enough to claim enough campsite space for all of us.

  • Looking at all the reg fees now... With Al's coupon/discount code (RACEWF11, thru end of Oct), you get a $10 discount: $234 total.

Also, if this is OFFICIAL EN race, there's a page to register EN as OFFICIAL, and get a $10/member rebate for those who choose EN in the dropdown (10 min members). Who can submit that for EN?

I really hate thinking about 2012 when I still have one HUGE race left to go THIS year!

And, YES, I just hit the REGISTER button! I'm in!

  • I'm in!!! Registered and still claiming the bed with Riley (rich's dog) in the Strauss camper. image

Can not wait. Will be a blast. Now let's just figure out who is traveling in to where at what days to see how we all go. Matt and I are game to come in on Thursday to LAX or San Jose or San Fran

@Rich. One question too for packing. How primitive camping is this and how much food to worry about bringing in?
  • Primitive in that the nearest store/place where you can buy food is Paso Robles, about 45' away, and getting in/out of the campground is a PITA. You'll walk a few yards to the restroom (unless you do the wide-mouth bottle trick ), don't count on a shower while you're up there, stuff like that.

But you could always pick up any special stuff you need on your drive up and keep it/cook it in my coolers and stove. Basically, I can have enough cooler and stove/grill space available that it can be a community setup.

  • in 2010, there was a restroom with showers.  the drainage wasn't so good, so u were standing in ankle high water and no stalls, just 5 or so shower heads next to each other on each wall...and i think i remember there was no warm water.

  •  Trigger pulled.  I am in!

  • I am seriously thinking about joining you guys this year. Here's an interesting question for you all. Is anyone doing the HIM on Sat and the Olympic on Sunday? On my season calendar I have the "Big Day" the following week. Seems to me that Wildflower would be the perfect place to HTFU and pull a double.

    Am I fricken nutts?

  • I'd contemplate joining you all but I have Texas 70.3 on April 1st, NOLA 70.3 on April 22nd and Syracuse 70.3 on June 24th.  If I were to include Wildflower, that would be three HIMs in five weeks with a fourth a month and change later.  Sounds like too much.

    Or does it?

  • @geoff- the only problem is you won't feel like drinking the beers with the gang knowing you have to race next day. All though if you don't mind racing with a hang over then go for it.

@bob- if you weren't in my age group and fast then I'd talk you into it but......

    Hi Geoff,

I think Mike Hedman did that one year and we called it the Dumbass Double . I say do it, race, eat and drink on Saturday like you're not racing Sunday...then race Sunday. What's the worst that could happen?

  •  It would not be the first time someone has call me a dumbass!   Pulling the trigger tonight on the half.  Will think about the dumbass double!

  • It's actually possible to do a triple if you tell the race organizers -- do the swim on the long course, drop your chip in transition, do the complete mountain bike race, and after you finish, pick up your chip and continue in the long course. Then you do the Olympic distance on Sunday.
  • reading this thread, i see the following people "in"
    Coach Rich
    Gilberto
    Stark
    Ambrose
    Alexander
    Jenks
    Massey
    Shannon
    Garson
    Ancona
    Prough
    Corso
    Any others?

And a bunch of others on the fence…
This is only two weeks before the American Zofignen Chris Gleason Memorial, but I am still heavily leaning towards doing this… wanted to get confirmation as who is in. I am treating this as an early season training weekend, not a race and a good weekend of EN mojo building. Just waiting for the Ex-mrs to confirm custody schedule so I know for sure that I have the weekend “off”
  •  I'm in. My wife will join me and is looking for a biker to join her in a relay HIM.

  • Let me know who else is interested in doing a relay and I can hit up my locals here.

  • i'll likely miss the party.  Things at work have been going well and i'll thankfully be focusing on finishing up my thesis around that time.

  • All,

With Wildflower officially just around the corner I realized I officially need to get my act together and finish planning for this event ASAP. For me, that boils down to solidifying my camping plans in the very near future.

As everyone knows, the camping passes are issued per vehicle, not per person or campsite. To that effect, I will be driving up from San Diego through LA and onward to the race site. Is there anyone the SoCal area who either would be interested in tagging along with me, or vice versa?

Otherwise, I'll be buying my camping passes here within the next few days and just planning on meeting up with whomever I can once I'm inside the campgrounds.

    Trevor, see this

    post here

. You can get a ride with me from my place (leaving very early Thursday morning, about 6:30) or can drive up and jump in my truck in Paso, about 45-60' outside the campground. Traveling with my friend Marvin and Riley the WonderPup.

  • Hey Guys, I'm really bummed but Wildflower is going to be my 2nd DNS ever.

To make a long story short, lot's going on at work and in my personal life (all good stuff, but keeping me really really busy). We are moving the week before Wildflower and while we are excited about the move and new house we had to settle for less than ideal closing dates. The week of the race we will be closing on the sale of our house, moving our stuff to out, living with my parents for a few days, closing on a new house, and then moving back in.

As much as I really want to do this race and enjoy the weekend, there is no way I can fly across the country and leave my wife and daughter to move into a new house while I hang out and race.

We tried many different ways to negotiate a different closing date on the sale of our house but with the way the market is we had to just take the offer we had and deal with the date. It ended up leaving us with under 4 weeks, to pack up, move out, and find a new place...so it's been a little crazy for us recently.
  • Matt - Likewise bummed. Congrats on the new house. Don't get injured lifting boxes.

  • Thanks Al. Funny you should say that, I realize how weak I really am last night when I started to pack up my warehouse of triathlon nutrition, shoes, and bike parts. I'll be in AZ in November so we should finally be at the same race at the same time for once.
  • Matt,

Sorry you can't make it. Put this on your radar for next year. I'm racing IMCDA and WF has always been a good workup for me.

Al, see my post about logistics. Let me know if you need any help. I have a bunk available in the trailer.
  • Rich, I will. I emailed the Race Director to see if they would at least give me a partial credit towards next year since they wont give me any sort of refund and I can't transfer the spot.
  • Bummer Matt, but totally understandable. Especially after having just moved cross-country a few months back, I have a renewed sense of how much work goes into it, and mine probably is/should have been a breeze since it was just a single person move.
