2012 Blue Ridge Parkway Camp (5/24 to 5/27)

May 24th to May 27th

Join Coach Patrick and the East Coast EN Mafia for our first annual Blue Ridge Mountain Cycling Camp. We'll cover almost four hundred miles in four days, averaging approximately 8000 ft of gain every day! This is an excellent opportunity to develop critical endurance fitness and strength on the bike, and is perfect for athletes looking to race in July, August, and early September.

Several EN members did this ride in 2011 with great success...you can read all about their experience in Dave Campbell’s Ride Report here. Because this will be a holiday weekend, we’ll be modifying the route to reduce the impact of increased traffic on our riding...but it still looks to be epic!

But don't take my word that this camp will test you…view the individual stages yourself!

  • Where does one fly into/ out of for this camp?
  • Who are the "founders" that get 60% off?
  • Mike, I think best bet is Charlottesville Va. Its a short drive, maybe 20 miles from the start. Ruth, founders are the group from last year.
  • @Mike, are you in? Man, that would be so cool to have you there....  image

@Ruth, this camp was started by our members, in the interest of honoring their hard work, we are offering them a sick discount. Just another example of how we do our best to do right by you guys.

  • Thinking about it... In need of some serious SAU's, though!
  • I ride the blue ridge/shenandoah valley a lot in the spring and summer. There are some very challenging climbs, mostly it is a long steady grind with spectacular views. Richmond may also have some better flights prices since Charlottesville is a small airport.
  • This camp would give me a couple of days rest after IMTX. No problem!
  • As Charlotteville is less than two hours from my house, this may be a no brainer.

Patrick, how does the timing of this work for IMCDA (June 24)?

  • I'm about 90% sure I'm in. Wanted to do it last year. I can drive down from NJ....
  • @Pete: I did ToC last year and it was incredible. Kinda disappointed that I won't be able to make it back again this year. This one is a hell of a lot closer. We should grab Tucker and a few other NJ Boys and make a road trip out of it.
  • @ Pete G - I agree - I'll post something in the NJ Cell Group...
  • Had to be the week after IM TX...dang! I REALLY REALLY want to do this!
  • Would love to come up but my anniversary in May 26. Not enough SAU's in the world to cover that.
  • Sounds like we are going to have a great camp in 2012. SAU's and schedule permitting I will be there!
  • Were you aware that Wilderness Road Ride and Mountains of Misery is always scheduled for this weekend in Blacksburg? I'd be psyched for this camp but usually rent a house on a lake and hit these rides with a group of friends. Would suck to miss one or the other.

  • @Roy - the timing is just about close enough...a final big cycling block...return home to rest a day or two...then do race sim the next weekend and nail your taper. Hope you can make it!!!

@Joel - I am definitely not attuned to the Blacksburg cycling calendar. image I think whichever way you go you'll win!!
  • I'm thinking I can pull of both - Thurs-Fri with EN and Sat-Sun doing the Double Header. It's only about 2hr drive from Lyndhurst to Blackburg. I'd get 2 good days in the saddle Thur-Fri, take one of the shorter rides for the Wilderness Road Ride on Sat, then bitch-slap the double metric century on Sunday (13,000ft climbing). Yep - I'm in for sure!
  • I'm working out the details between 2 day and 4 day, but I'm in as a part of my preparation for IMCDA. Glad to read the feedback to Roy, P.
  • Coach P - my A race = 2012 IMLP - is it a good idea to to both Blue Ridge & IMUSA camps

    thx

    jeff
  • @Jeff, if you can do them both, then yes. I will, but then again I like to train a lot. image

Three folks are already confirmed in!
  • As Coach P mentioned, due to traffic on the Holiday weekend, we will do the mapmyride routes as Day 3 & 4 routes will happen on Thursday and Friday, Day 1 & 2 on Saturday and Sunday.  This will put us on the Skyline Drive the first 2 days and the Blue Ridge Parkway the last 2 days.  The end on the day 2 route is the hardest Cat 1 climb on the camp and for the 4 day group will come at the end of day 3, so this stacks up to be a bit harder than last year.  Also a big climb to start Friday morning(mapmyride day4)  Just want to clarify this for those thinking about the camp and where we'll be when.  Laying out the routes like this should be less traffic on Sat/Sun, but will be a bigger challenge!!  Bring it on!

  • Bigger Challenge = Better Camp...who else is in???
  •  If the Navy does not send me away again I am in!

Dave i did not look at the map but are we just flipping from last year?  Santa is going to be bring me a compact for the Seven!

What are we doing for SAG?

I will be driving from Chesapeake (Eastern Virginia) I could possibily fetch people from the Richmond airport its on the way.

  • Ralph, glad your in!! Yes we are just flipping the out and backs to stay off Skyline drive on a Holiday weekend. I THINK? it would be better to do Skyline Thur/Fri and BRP on Sat/sun from a traffic standpoint. But that makes that tough climb on the south end of the BRP come at the end of day 3 vs day 1. This should be interesting!!

Coach P is working out the details on SAG. More to come I'm sure.
  • Just read this and thought you guys might want to know.

  • Is this still on? How many are in?
  • It better be on - I already stroked a check for $250 image
  •  It should happen one way or another!

  • It's on, we have 7-8 folks right now...get in while you can!!! image
  •  Glad someone started to post on this thread.  I had forgot about the due date for the balance.....Also gotta get that compact ordered.....
