30 Runs Hath December

A thread for late season racers just starting the "30 runs in 30 days" challenge. I'll be doing short frequent runs as I rehab my plantar fascia. If things go well the first two weeks, I'll aim for my traditional New Year's Day 5K.

  • I'm in Al!

I've had enough of this sleeping in crap, eating anything I want and having a couple beers everynight!  10 days is too much. I long for those 4:00am mornings and going to bed at 8:15 because I am exhausted.

Starting December 1st (thursday) I will pounding the streets. Well, 5 miles of the streets. But at least I will be able to hold my head high and say I am back on the wagon.  I hope that wagon has overload springs....I may have gained a few pounds since IMAZ.

  • WTF!!! I am already behind in the swim challenge and trying like mad to catch up and now you throw this in my face? Ugghh, I am in.
  • FYI, we do an annual holiday run challenge from Xmas to New Years as well, for those of you who want to play but can't commit to 30 days of running. image I want to play, but 12/1 has to be a day off for me b/c I didn't take either one last week (5k PR one day, soccer the next)....but I'll be a lurker!!!
  • Lurk on Coach P...

Day 1...I started my 30 Runs Hath December challenge this morning, 10 days post IMAZ. At the start I felt great, but about 4 miles into it the fatigue monster was catching me. By the time i made it home I was officially tired.

What is the intensity of these runs, obviously they aren't going to be "all out" runs. Should we target zone 1-2, zone 2. I know it's not a good idea to increase volume and intensity together.

  • BTW... 5.5 miles in 44:47. Avg pace of 8:08/ mile. Not fast enough to write home about, but it was better than sleeping in.
  • I did 40 minutes on the tread this am. That count?
  • Are there general rules...minimum time, distance, pace?
  • I'm in! I bailed on the 1st challenge to rest hammie so this should work out OK. (Plus running with the puppy tires her out!) Any fancy tracking spreadsheet for this?
  • Here is the workbook that John Withrow started. I recycled the spreadsheet and automated the Day-Date fields so in the future we only need to change the start date

I am not playing this time but thougt I could put my geekery to good use....

  • @Steve- Thanks for your geekness! (I love a good spreadsheet myself! image
  • If you want to use the spreadsheet, have at it. I am just going to post to the forum. The requirements are at least 30 minutes, doubles are fine to make up for a missed one, but the spirit of the challenge is to get a run in EVERY day. Indoors or Outdoors, doesn't matter. Due to the added frequency the intensity should be a little lower than normal run schedule to avoid any injuries, so pace is whatever is good for you. Also this isn't necessarily designed for those already in an OS, because the added run volume will definately effect the quality of your other WO's.
  • We had a little blizzard going on here this morning, so it was 40 minutes in the pain cave on the treadmill. Threw in a few 400's at zone 4, just to feel like I was working hard again. Felt pretty good to be on my feet post-IMAZ.
  •  I finally got my month off the ground in the dark by thePacific Ocean in the cradle of triathlon, Encinitas, CA. 4 miles in 33:20, with a few fartlek sprints thrown in at the end because I felt so good. After not running for 11 days since IM AZ, I was really jazzed to get back in my Kinvaras, and stretch out my legs. The race cured my plantar fasciitis, and the knee twinges I'd felt 4 days ago when I tried to run 2 miles on the track were gone, too. I've never run more than 4 days in a row before, and I usually have done every other day as my routine, so running shorter time/distance daily is an experiment for me. My route this PM was pitch black by Hiway 101 on the cliffs above San Elijo beach - no street lights there, just a few car headlights for visibility. I run mostly by Braille anyway, though.

  •  Tempting but between the 50 mile swim challenge, the 31 day Spinerval challenge and Body for Life strength training during outseason, I have to back away....doing the Holiday run challenge though!!!

  • so I did the last 30 day challenge, but as I am in NOS OS don't see how to handle this on top of that. Question re: how to handle the "holiday run challenge" btwn X-mas and NY. Is there a way to adjust the OS so that it is possible to include the holiday challenge? I'm gonna put this question in the macro thread too, just wondering thoughts from the team.

  • Day 2 ... 5.3 miles in 45:xx at an average pace of 8:25. A Little slower than yesterday but working on form mainly. Want to come out of this challenge with good form locked in.

  • Technically one could get in 30 days of running in December if they started today - if you're on the fence.  Trying to get my wife to join me, and that's what I told her at least.

I'm in.  Ran on the treadmill last night after work.  First run post IMAZ was not pretty.  Took me 15 minutes just to get the legs to turn over and felt several nagging injuries that developed during the race, such as pain in left kneecap (not sure how that develops).  All of which are excuses for my lackluster performance of.... 2.86 miles in 30 minutes!  My run form and fitness are crap. I'm very motivated to become a faster runner, however.

  • I'm in..although starting a day late..
    @Steve thanks for the spreadsheet.

  • 4.75 mi in 41:25, including 4 strides at th end. Balmy 60F on the PCH in North County San Diego. Monday, I go back to the drizzerable PAC NW.
  • Day 3.....First "long" run since IMAZ, two weeks ago. It felt much better than I had anticipated.  8.00 miles in 1:06:39 with an average pace of 8:19/mile. Negative split the second half by nearly 4 minutes.

  • 3 for 3.  Can't say that I'm tearing it up, though I'm enjoying running without a plan for now and my new recovery drink - Samuel Adams. Last night,  3.5 miles in 35min and tonight same loop in 33:57.  Haven't had a chance to test my lungs, because I am fighting tired legs and some lingering patellar tendonitis.

  • 4.75 in 42:25. Beautiful run right along the receding surf line hard pack sand below the cliffs at Solana Beach. 20+ mph headwind on return leg along with time for 4 strides and some drills (knee raises, butt kicks and skipping) accounted for my slower time today. My iPad (all I have here) wont synch with google docs, so until I return home, I gotta document here.
  • Nice 1:15 run on the trails this morning. Beautiful and sunny here in Rochester, NY on our way to 60F? later today. Going to go out for a quick second session with the dog a little later so I can be 4 for 4 for December.
  • Day 4... 5.42 miles in 45:42 with an avg pace of 8:26/mile. I have lost a pound a day since starting my run challenge. Pretty sweet, although I doubt that will continue past about 5-6 lbs. Nice work everyone!

@Dom- I can't say that I am TEARING anything up either, but it is nicce to just get out and run without a plan.
@Al- you're missing all this sub 30 degree weather!
@Kevin- who would have thought that NY is 30 degrees warmer than Seattle.
  •  43:20 & 5.1 mi with 5 strides. All on sand.

@Steve: actually I am hoping to have some dry cool weather for running at home. Since I run in the afternoon, I miss the freeze.

  • @all, so jealous. Have had a low level cold for a few weeks...and the work of the OS is just enough to make me feel borderline with my recovery. Had to back off but I envy you in spirit!!!
  •  Today's challenge: running post dinner and drinks (2 beers) with friends after the Giants/Packers game.  Was not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. 3.5 miles in 33 minutes with each mile faster thank the last (10:06, 9:43, 9:29, 7:39 last 1/2 mile).  Leg soreness/stiffness is receding.  Will try to increase the mileage next week.  Those posting results earlier today kept me motivated - thanks guys!

  • Day 5... 5.45 miles in 47:50 with an avg pace of 8:47/ mile. Not a great run, my left shin was tight the whole time. Don't know if its just accumulated fatigue, or the fact that it was 27* outside this morning. But I got it done.
  • @Steve - nice job this morning. I admire you getting up and getting it done in the cold weather.

Day 5 also in the books and progressively finding my legs again. Added an extra mile today. 4.47 miles in 38:51 (8:41 pace). Progressively faster with each mile, though its mostly due to grade changes on the out and back. Either way logged 9:06/mile, 8:45, 8:40, 8:19, and 8:31 for last 1/2 mile. 8:19 is supposed to be my z4, but didn't feel so tough.
  • Easy 3-miles today. Five for five.
