Garmin 910XT

Did my first run with the 910 yesterday. The only real issue is the pace jumps all over the place. It ultimately provides the correct results but real time pace is unusable right now.   Plenty of talk about this issue at ST.  One moment I'm running 8:00, then it's 11:30, then it's 7:45, then it's 10:40, then it's 9:20, etc.

The good:

- Smaller and lower profile than the 310.

- More comfortable.

- More adjustment options with the new strap design.

- Syncs with satellites much faster.

- The strap seems more secure than the shitty strap that came with the 310. How many 310's are now resting at the bottom of lakes and oceans around the world?

The bad:

- The pace issue. How that got through their testing is beyond me. It's useless as is. It's an easy firmware fix so I'm not going to sweat it too much.

- The new bike power metrics aren't there yet.

The pace issue can be somewhat mitigated by using lap pace and shorter laps (like .25 or .50 mile auto laps instead of 1 mile).

  • Thanks for being the guinea pig on this Bob. Excited to get the 910, but will hold off until you give it the green light.
  • Swam with it today. The indoor pool swim metrics are scary accurate.
  • Thanks for the feedback! I'm waiting for them to get the power metrics. Until then, my 310xt and Smartsense are filling the bill.
  • I'm going to pull the trigger on the 910 soon. Keep the info coming...
  • So jelious! My wife pre-ordered the 910 for Christmas for e from Amazon. It has not turned up yet.... But t sounds like my 305 and 705 are a little in the real near term.... Still jelious tho.... image

I'd give it the green light now with the caveat of the pace issue.  Garmin has already addressed the pace issue and said a fix is coming soon.  I would assume the bike metrics are coming soon as well.  Whatever coming soon means.  That stated, Garmin has done a decent job with firmware updates in the past.

It's just a better produced product than the 310.  Smaller, lighter, way more comfortable and the swim metrics are definitely a nice feature.

  • Now I have to figure out a good way to have an excuse to give/sell my 310 to the kids.... :-)

Seriously, thanks to you all for being our "beta testers"
  • Just wanted to add that Wheelbuilder just tweeted they have the 910 in stock. Maybe if you want one shoot Rich an email and he can check on pricing.
  • Mine should be arriving soon and can't wait. So glad my back light went out in the 310 and give me the excuse that "I need a new one with the light honey since I do all my runs at O'dark thirty to spend more time with you". Glad I'm not in William's predicament trying to prove that my 10 year old needs my 310 for his 2 mile runs.

When I get mine I'll post how my experience is with it in all aspects (swim, bike, and run) so others will know if smart to jump.

I think wheelbuilder gives you 10% off being EN member. At least they did me.
  • I got mine Monday. Swam and it was dead on. Run pace on a t-mill was accurate. I like the interface with Connect.Garmin and the lower profile and color is much better than the bulky orange. A great upgrade for me!
  • I sent a message to wheelbuilder and asked them about the discount. They got back to me and said that they sold all the 910xt's that they had and are out of them until mid-march. They did not say if we get a discount or not. Have one on backorder at Amazon at the moment.
  • I'm with Nemo, I'd certainly like to have the 910 simply to consolidate devices and for the slimmer profile, but the 310xt is still holding on strong for me, plus I picked up a SwimSense last year off of ebay which has been working like a charm. If I didn't have the swimsense though, it would be a lot more compelling to go to the 910.

The addition of Coggin power metrics has been nice though, I've been enjoying having NP on my Edge 800 but have been slightly less obsessed about TSS compared to my previous seasons.
  • It is like finding a Unicorn. My 910xt Eagle has landed.

I am really stoked on this watch. I am still using the 305, so this is a cool upgrade for me. I use the 705 on the bike, but since it will not be getting the power metric firmware update, the 910xt will fill a couple gaps for me.

In honor of my gadget hero, the DC Rainmaker, behold! The unboxing:

Once I take it for a splash and a little trot, I will let you know how goes....
  • Got mine over the weekend and have used on the TM calibrated to it and it seems to be very close (within .01 in a mile) on accuracy. Love the sleeker look and feel than the 310 and it seems to have a lot of different options to display on screens. Same with the bike -- no problems sync to power meter and other Ant+ things.

I haven't went to swim with it yet but this is what I think is the big difference with this over the 310 (and the power stuff coming for bike) So it'll be interesting to see numbers from a swim and when at the pool not have to always worry about "Oh crap I keep forgetting to count strokes to see how my golf score is doing". It it works maybe this will help me finally get a somewhat proper swim going.
  • I have a great S.O.!! 910xt for Valentine's Day!  Happy Valentine's Day to all of you Lovahs out there!!!!

  • Has anyone had this issue. I have a custom profile on my 910xt from New Leaf which is supposed use my metabolic measures to set my HR zones and calorie data. It has worked great with my 305, but it seems to give the 910 fits. Check out the calorie burn.... 9,674 calories in 1 hour ride.

Maybe time for a reset or tech support....

  • @ Dino:  Or you will start having to eat like Michael Phelps

  • Hey folks,

PLEASE go through me if you're thinking of buying anything through Wheelbuilder. I don't want to put Rich and crew into the position of having to say no to a 10% discount applied to a $xxxx item because someone called them up and tossed the EN name around. Not saying it's being taken advantage of, but he sells high ticket stuff and these are the terms of his deal with us. Thanks!

That said, I'm happy to work with you and him to organize a group buy on Garmin units, if you're interested. Y'all sure seem to like your electonic gizmos, he said, armed with his trusty 305...

  • I only do the workouts so I can play with the gadgets..... image
  • A group deal would be nice. But if anyone is very antsy to get one ASAP, they are in stock now at https://www.citysports.com
  • Greetings Fellow Gadget Geeks!

Loving my 910XT! FYI, you can become a VIP member of Road Runner Sports for $1.99 and then get 10% off the Garmin 910XT. They shipped ours as soon as they were in stock – no drama mama. Also, thought you might find the feedback I sent to DC Rainmaker helpful.

    Enjoy!

    Hi Ray,

    Thanks for the fabulous reviews!

I just used my 910XT for the first time in the pool today. One thing that I think would be pretty simple is to add two fields:

1 - A field that is the amount of time since the start of last interval.

2 - A field that represents the time since end of last interval.

These two fields would allow swimmers to do sets "on the 5:00" or sets "with 0:30 rest between".

Any idea if this is on Garmin's radar or how to GET it on their radar?

Again, thanks so much, I use your reviews like a bible! :-)

    Hi Jenn-

That's actually a really good idea. While you could sorta rig it by just including a 'elapsed time' counter on there, I think your request is pretty valid - and as someone who does large sets of 50's and 100's on a given time (or with a given rest interval), I like that.

    Passing it on...

    Thanks Ray,

I felt kind of silly with this schwanky new watch still straining to see the deck clock to hit my sets. I’m sure a lot of swimmers will agree. BTW: I did try the “elapsed time” trick but honestly I got myself more spun around trying to keep track digitally of what “on the 2:20” meant vs. just looking at the ginormous big dial with the rest of my lanemates.

    Thanks again

  • It looks like REI has the 910xt in stock now as well. I'm still hesitant to pull the trigger until the 'bugs' get worked out and the power metrics are on the device. Since that is the main reason that I will be buying it, as I already have a 310xt. Also might as well wait until I get my refund check for 2011 from REI!
    Keep the updates coming guys.
  • Sawiris and I can match that 10% off. If you want in, email me at rich@endurancenation.us with Garmin Geek in the subject line. Rich has/is placing a large order and I'll reserve as many of these as I can.

  • @Rich: Do you know how soon we can get delivery. Would love to have it by 3/8? Thanks!
  • First swim with mine this morning and WOW I was pleasantly surprised at the accuracy, swim golf score, etc... Very Very cool and with how good it has been hooking up to foot pod, gps sattilites finding quickly, and all the different fields it offers I consider this one of my best purchases in a long time. And if any of you know me I am the one who pretty much eventually gets all the new gadgets out and tries them.
  • In case you have not seen it, there is a firmware update out today for the 910xt. Here are the fixes according to the website:
    * Improved calculation of instantaneous pace.
    * Fixed occasional watch freeze issue during pool swim.
    * Fixed potential dropout of speed/cadence data when using speed/cadence sensor and particular power meters when GPS off.
    * Fixed occasional problem of multisport activities containing pool swim not uploading to Garmin Connect.
    * Made improvement to reduce elevation spikes at beginning of activities.
  • Have power metrics made an appearance in a firmware update for the 910xt yet?

    Nope.

    *sigh*

Ok, thanks for letting us know, I appreciate that.  I guess that means my money can keep me company a little while longer.
