  • I'm in. I don't have a ton of experience on the bike so I need something like this. All of my rides for this challenge will be on the trainer. Any extra points for riding outside in sub-freezing temps, ha ha?
  • Can I sign up after I determine how I'd score, after the weekend? I've got a "base camp" with my local tri team in TX Hill Country that weekend, but might be able to only do 2 or 3 days.
  • Hope the weather is nice...I prefer to puke outside.

  • OK gang, to sweeten the pot Coach Rich and Coach Patrick are going to provide the following prizes for the top 3 finishers of this event.  They are:

    1st Place = $30 iTunes Gift Card

    2nd Place = $20 iTunes Gift Card

    3rd Place = $10 iTunes Gift Card

So who needs some new tunes for their iDevice?

    Game on!

  • It all begins tomorrow!  Are you all ready?

  • I'm ready are you? On the way home from work I stopped at the LBS and got an extra bottle for the bike and some chamois cream, ha ha. Gonna try to get in some good workouts this weekend, all on the trainer! Carb loading tonight!
  • Super late enrollee. Thought I might be able to sneak away to daughter's Volleyball Tournament in Las Vegas this weekend but stuck in Chicago. I only have partial time due to an all day Competition Sunday with my other daughter, but this should be fun. Might even do my first outdoor ride of the year.. Good luck to everyone
  • Challenge day 1 in the bag. I chose to keep the time on the bike to a reasonable number so went with 1’Z5 X 1’ Z1 intervals to get some points.

    WU 10’ at Z2,
    MS 3 X 10 X 1’Z5 X 1’Z1 (5’ Z1)
    + 5 X 1’Z5 X 1’Z1
    CD 5’Z1
    Total time 1:40 TSS 128, IF= .879
    Points = 6.25

The last 5 1’X’1 were rough with the last one being all I could do to hold the watts.
  • Day 1 done. My JOS wkt was:
    2x10Z4 1pt
    1x5Z4
    2x15Z3 1pt
    30' z1 work
    But, 2 pics tweeted-2 pts
    2 videos tweeted-4 pts.
    9+ pts !
  • I will come out (well actually on the trainer) and play. 30 min w/; 20'(5') 15'(5') 10'(5') and 5'(5') @ zone 4+ (Rec @ z2) then 30'z3. Longest and hadest ride since October crash. Yeah!!!
  • Duration: 3:02
    Work: 2148kJ
    TSS: 242.4 (IF 0.898)
    PNorm: 211
    VI: 1.07
    Distance 56.8

I did the following work for a total of 6 points:
    14' ON
    30' FTP
    60' ABP

I'm not sure how points are being tallied...I also did 30' straight up at Z1. If I include my warmup and rest intervals for the Z5 work that would put me a few minutes over 60' at Z1 for an extra point. Should I/are you guys counting that? If I include that I have 7 points.
  • Down in Fredericksburg tx, "hill country", this weekend. Supposed to get in 100km today, but the mid-50s temps, monsoon rain, 50% flat rate of the 40 people with us, and the raging river that prevented us from going further than 10 miles, all put a damper on the plans. Will go for 80ish miles tomorrow, in (hopefully) better conditions.
  • Hi Doug. I wasn't sure how points were being tallied either based on the 2 who posted their times before me. I did 30' z1 with warm up & breaks also & counted half a point(60' for a point) My JOS wkt asked for 25' z4 as 2x10, then 1x5. You get a point for 15 of z4 so I took the remaining 10' mins as a ratio so counted as 1.6 (basically 1 & 2/3) I'm not doing any fancy math, and who knows if I'm doing it right. It's more for the fun and accountability for me! So, hope that helps!!!
  • I include warm up and cool down times. The points rules are in Johns post at the start of the thread. 60 min of Z1 get you 1 point.

Wow some strong rides yesterday!! Great legs for all today!
  • Legs were tired today but did the Spinervals Have Mercy 15.0. Has some hard and some easy. Got it done for a 2 hour ride and a whopping 3+ points.

  • Watch your zones. Just realized I lost about 40 minutes of riding time b/c it was out of the scoring zones...

Yes Zone 2 is not in the list for points.Odd!!    Worst case is count that as time in Zone 1.

  • as I understand the rules 85 to 95 does big count either.
  • as I understand the rules 85 to 95 does big count either.
  • Well, I'm not going to take the cake on the challenge as a whole, didn't end up making it back out today as originally planned and it's back to work tomorrow... but I still wanted to share my ride from yesterday as I intended.

Was a pretty day of riding up the coast in North San Diego county. Headed out to hit some climbs on the way up north then cruise up to Encinitas / Leucadia and snap some photos along the way. Had a good mix of some hard climbs and some JRA / sightseeing. Felt a little flat on the climbs, could feel having skipped the rest day in lieu of a swim/bike brick on Friday after work, but still just a fun day to be outside.

    From the Garmin:

    • Distance:59.34 mi
    • Time:3:41:20
    • Avg Speed:16.1 mph
    • Elevation Gain:5,236 ft
    • Calories:2,591 C
    • Avg Temperature:59.4 °F
    • Avg Power: 237W

And this last one I'm not quite sure about but,

    • NP: 254W

The NP is as reported by my Edge 800, but need to cross-reference with WKO when I switch computers since that seems higher than expected. 16mph is pretty dismal but the 5200 ft of climb had a little something to do with it, actually had a bit more but I did the dreaded 'forgot to unpause the garmin' after stopping for a drink at one point.

Anyway, the scenery I wanted to share:

Torrey Pines Glider Port, looking down at Black's Beach on my way up North:

Swami's Beach in Encinitas, roughly around the halfway point:

    '

Mt Soledad looking down at La Jolla, my third time up to the Mt Soledad summit that day:

To all of my winter-bound bretheren, my heart goes out to you, it really does, but as a wise man once said... damn it feels good to be a gansta

  • Day 2:
    15' Z1 warmup=1/4 point.
    20'Z5 TT test=4 points.
pic of me & an EN teammate tweeted=1 pt.
    Total=5.25 pts.
  • P.S. I think you should get a point for working out with an EN teammateimage
  • Nice work everyone. Amazing pics Trevor. I spent the month of February in SoCal (SanDiego) in 2003, it was awesome.

Didn't ride today. I got a tri bike about 2 weeks ago and have been adjusting my position on it and kind of getting used to it(previously training on my road bike). I had done a test this past Tuesday to figure out my numbers but I think I was fatigued before the test began. Based on my workout yesterday I don't think my FTP is accurate. So I rested today and am gonna test tomorrow. I'll post the details when I get finished. I'm a little disappointed because I wanted to get 3 solid rides in this weekend. On the other hand I'm looking forward to having an accurate FTP so that I'm training in the optimal zones.

Keep up the good work team!
  • Darn auto correct, meant .85- .95 do not count
  • Well my target for the day was 10 points. That did not happen. The legs were tired from yesterday. On top of that I started my intervals with a set of 2’ at Z5 and 1’ at Z1. Wow what a difference those are to 1’/1’. I made it though 5 reps and had to fall back to the 1’/1’ repeats. This was a long 2 hours on the trainer. It will be interesting to see how poor the legs feel tomorrow!

    WU 10’ at Z2,

    MS 5X 2’Z5, 1’ Z1 (5’ Z1)

    + 2 X 10 X 1’Z5 , 1’Z1 (5’ Z1)

    +5’ Z4

    +4 X 1’Z5 , 1’Z1 (5’ Z1)

    +5 Z4

    CD 5’Z1

    Total time 2:00 TSS 146, IF= .866

    Points = 7.17

  • So my assumption was correct...my ftp test last week wasn't real accurate. Based on that test my FTP was 231. New test today resulted in an FTP of 254 which I feel is probably right on. The good thing is that my power only dropped by 12 watts from the road bike to the tri-bike! I'm going to scratch my points for Saturday's ride because those numbers weren't accurate. No points, but it still was a great workout.

Here are the details of the test today:

    Duration: 42:12
    Work: 639kJ
    TSS: 70.3 (IF 0.999)
    PNorm: 254
    VI: 1.01
    Distance 14.5

This only results in 2.67 points for the 40'' at FTP. There was no way I could do an extra 5' for the full 3rd point. So instead I am posting a video for 2 extra points! All together 4.67 points today.

You can find the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBkKl5biqEU&list=HL1329762131&feature=mh_lolz

It was good riding with you guys! Enjoy the holiday.
  • @ Trever - Thanks for the great pics!!

@ Doug - rather than scratching Saturdays points, can you recalculate based on the new zones? Congratulations on the nice bump in FTP!!!
  • I am pooped! But, I'm happy I participated. Day 3:
    Z1-20'-1/3 of a pt
    Z3-20'-2/3 of a pt
    Z4-20 mins-1pt-1 & 1/3 pts
    tweeted pic-1 pt
    3.3 total
  • At Matt's suggestion I looked at my numbers from Saturdays ride and was able to break it down into the following based on an accurate FTP:

    128' @ Z1
    8' @ Z3
    36' @ Z4
    8' @ Z5

If i calculated correctly this amounts to 5.94 points for Saturday's ride.

    Nice work everyone!
