East Coast Swim Clinic or Virtual Swim Clinic

Please Read and Vote on what you want!

Folks, I have gotten maybe 10 separate emails / PMs / Tweets about an East Coast swim clinic. I'd love to do it, but can realistically only make it happen in the Boston or Providence area, which locks a lot of folks out. If I were to do it live, then we'd be looking at April most likely for this to happen; if we were to do it Virtually, then we could do it on-going, etc.

Here is the virtual swim clinic option so you can see what it entails: http://bit.ly/xYpnPB

Please vote before 3/8 so I can plan, thanks!!

  • Not sure if I care about which is offered since I live in the area. However, the virtual seems like it would give me the chance to get feedback vs. hope that the date of a live clinic works for my schedule.
  • Life, racing etc make travel unlikely. Virtual could possibly be better ROI
  • Virtual would be great, but in person on the EC would really be awesome. I'd definitely attend. Saw that email about Rich's course in El Monte and immediately wished I lived in the area - no, not just because of the three straight days of rain in NYC image

If this doesn't happen, does anyone know of good EC or NYC swim clinics/course? I could certainly use some technique training.
  • Why not both?!
  • Just voted virtual.
  •  For those in/near the NYC area, there is a very good clinic coming up March 25th at the Fanwood NJ YMCA.  I took this stroke clinic last year and it was fantastic.  This year they are adding a video-taped session as well.  I'm not sure if there are still spots available, but it would be well worth the time to attend.

  •  Here are attachments about the Fanwood YMCA clinics and a link to the Fanwood YMCA:  www.fanwoodscotchplainsymca.org

  • The virtual clinic is so not real time that by time you look at it correct it give feedback to it , so much time would pass to ingrain the bad habit that we would need to correct the muscle memory would make it impossible to correct via a video.

If a video would do the trick for us EN has video of Rich swimming / drilling and we can learn using that, but that is not how you learn to swim correctly i.e.., video. You need someone constantly correcting you until you get it. While fighting coach said keep your right hand up close to your face, I said it is, coach then had someone left hook me and guess what my idea of what I was doing was .... not so much. I got whacked MANY times. You need a coach , you need 3 days of coaching just for the basics then maybe a video exchange might do it.

My vote would be to have both and one of them needs to be in Philadelphia... just saying.
  • I appreciate all the feedback on both options (please keep it coming). I can do the real world clinic but there's no video of you swimming that you take home. So I would video you and give you in put and then watch you do it again and give you feedback (no video on the second time) but that right there is a 3-4 hour experience with 20 folks. I am just saying that you'd get a video with drills you can work on, as well as a master video / instructional resource that you can do as you see fit. If one of my cues was "no hands across your centerline" you could have someone tell you if you are doing it or not. image That said I get the desire for a real world one...but prob not in Philly. Just saying I'd rather spend the time making something the whole Team could use vs the 20 folks closest to Boston. I probably won't do both Dottie, as I have this training thing...and a family...and this job thing... something about 24 hours in a day. image
  • I would absolutely be there for a live clinic in the Boston area. Can't beat real time coaching feedback from the deck. Masters coaches can be great (for those of us swimming with a masters group), but are rarely focused on us tri swimmers at the slower end of the pool!
  • I was just kidding, really. But, yeah-the virtual piece does seem like it would be a ton of work for you! We wouldn't want a virtual swim piece to take you away from the micro forum and all of the other work you do around here!!! In person clinic and done. I bet some people would travel to Boston--ya just never know--
  • Live would be (albeit selfishly) great...
Virtual seems like it would be significantly more work!
  • As previously mentioned I think live for the immediate feedback is optimal. After initial filming and critique during a live session I think follow-up video to see progress and make further corrections can be done virtually.
  • Okay folks, keep it coming..have fired up a dialogue to look at RI area pools...
  • When thinking in terms of ROI i think the real-world clinic is the way to go. Ill drive to Boston to get the live feedback.
  • I am willing to drive to Boston, something about live coaching for me. Thanks Pat if it works that way.

  • I'd look into a boston mini-trip for this clinic
  • Real time clinic would be great, especially if a take-home video of my issues was a possibility. Subject to scheduling of course. So, +1 for the real time Boston clinic.
  • Okay, seems like live is the way to go...a new poll for you guys then to help me figure this out!

#1 -- Location: Could you do near Providence, RI (about an hour from Boston) where I live now or does it have to be Boston?

#2 -- Content: Would you want to do swim only or have the option for a run clinic in the PM as well (to make the most of your day?)?
  • anything, and not in between 3/30-4/9 or Marathon weekend!

Providence totally fine. Run clinic sounds like a nice addition!! Thanks P!

  • I would drive to Providence for this. Run clinic would be a nice addition as well. Great idea to get the most out of the trip.
  • I would love to have both a swim and run clinic if it's feasible! The Providence area would be even better!!!! Real time coaching wold be my preference. Thanks Patrick!
  • Real time would be great! Providence area would be great!
  • Either location would be ok for me but my preference would be Boston. The key point is that I can earn some SAUs by taking my significant other to The Daily Catch which she absolutely loves!

The running clinic would be cool as well...good idea
  • Providence is good for me, I have family near Woonsocket to crash after. Would definitly stay for a run clinic too. Doing Boston I'd probably only do the swim then drive home (4 hr drive each way).

However, my spring is busy and will not be able to make certain dates.
  • Yes to PVD, yes to run clinic. Now I just need you to not pick one of my travel weekends!
  •  Okay!!! Stay tuned as we hash the date out!!!

  • Love that this is shaping up!! Looking forward to a trip up North. Thanks Patrick!
  • Just don't bring that Yankees cap Rob ;-)
  • Do it in providence! I'll make an overnight out of it and we can organize a team dinner... Kim, how is your guest room?
