The Racing and Training Tire Group Buy Thread

Hi Folks,

I've worked a group buy discount with Wheelbuilder.com to get you set up with training and racing tires, tubes, and wheelcovers (turns your wheel into a disk) for the upcoming season. Basically, all of your tire needs for 2012 taken care of in one shot!

Why use "race" tires?

The race tires below have a proven lower rolling resistance then other "training" tires. Latex tubes also reduce rolling resistance. Lower rolling resistance = few watts spent for the same speed = free speed! Beside, you gotta have tires on your bike for race day and after months and months of training you'll probably want to wear new rubber on race day so why not race with a tire + tube conbination that saves you watts?

Last year many of us raced in Vittoria Evo CX clinchers, latex tubes, and wheelcovers. These small tricks really pay off on race day!

  • Any "all-purpose" tires? (For training and racing) I'm not worried about shaving seconds or anything.

Pro Race 3 is a great tire, been riding it for years.

To this list maybe I'll also add a K-Edge chain catcher. I put one on the tri bike after dropping my chain at the very bottom of one of the steepest climbs on the IMWI course, during our camps. Works like a charm, makes it physically impossible to drop a chain.

If installed correctly.  Unfortunately for my new bike, the LBS didn't mount it quite close enought to the chainring.  So it didn't prevent me from dropping the chain at the turn onto the road to Hawi.....  Trust, but Verify!

  • Personally, I like the Conti Gatorskins for all-purpose training tire. I've got them on 3 sets of wheels I rotate between.

x2 on the K-edge! It's saved my arse several times on the tri bike. I just need one for my road bike too!
  • what is the timing on this? Could I order the Vitorrias and get them before IM TX on May 19th?
  • I'm interested in the chain catcher and possibly tubes, tires, and wheel cover depending on $.

I do have a question. My rear wheel is a standard 700c, 32 spoke, with a wired powertap. Do you know if I put a wheel cover on would it interfere with the signal between the hub and the little sharkfin on the chain stay?

    Thanks.
  • So glad I got the K-edge, just wish I would have had it before dropping my chain going uphill and missing out on a 70.3 world's slot by 7 seconds.

@Kim - x2 on the Pro Race 3. I only went through about a pair a year and that includes over half of the rides being on the trainer.

@Doug - I never had issues when I did that setup....wired PT w/ cover. Did it for a few years.
  • @Daniela, awesome. Thanks for the info.
  • Tom: yes, we can make that happen.
Yes to the shark fin, will work no problem.

The ST article was about twice as long as it needed to be. So, for the ENGeeks:

Is the official EN tire Vitorria or Conti? My Vittorias rocked at IMWI. Maybe I can get a deal from Rich on both...

  • @Doug, the only thing you need to worry about with a wheel cover is some people with Specialized Transitions could not get the cover to clear the narrow chainstays, I got mine to clear no problem.
  • Let's do it - let me know where/how to order!
  • As an unofficial ENGearGeek, I'm quite happy keeping the Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CX as my racing tire of choice. So I guess it gets my vote as the 'official' EN racing tire of choice.
  •  I'd be interested in Vitorria racing tires, latex tubes, disc cover and maybe CO2s.

Question...has anyone tried the Vittoria Corsa Evo Slicks (just non-treaded version of the CX)...and what is take on them?

    Thanks

  • x3 on the k-edge. Got one on the tri and road bike, never dropped a chain on the WI hills.
x2 on the Vitorria and pro3
  • X4 on the K edge. Heard the 2012 SRAM red front dérailleur has a built in guard...a future upgrade perhaps.
  • I'm in on the Vitorria
  • +1 on the Vitorria...
  • @Cary, thanks for the heads up. I have a Speed Concept, hopefully the cover will work with it.
  • @Doug, I have not heard any issues with Speed Concept bikes.
  • @Cary, thanx for the info!
  • This is coming together and I should prices and ordering instructions for everyone soon.
  • Thanks Rich. Perfect timing.
  • Not very good evidence due to sample size, but do we have any info on the puncture rate of people on Vittorias from last year's IM circuit?
  • I raced on them and didn't flat...maybe anyone who did flat will chime in? Dunno, honestly.

  • So how long do the latex tubes last? I used mine for a couple of practice rides, and then my race. But since then, I have had them sitting to the side.

Do others just keep using them until they flat?
  • is the wheelcover precut? can it be? EG for a 808 & PT?
  • @Joe: sorry, dunno. Mine are hanging in the garage also.

@Scott, yes, precut. That's why I need to know what wheel and PT (if any) this will be used for.

Yes.  It also gets to the detail of how many spokes your wheel has.....
